he was confused, sure, but the more he dwelled on it the more sense it seemed to make to him. or.. something like that. it was simple, right? she had just... moved on. quickly. very quickly. in all honestly, the tom was a little bit jealous considering she was the one whose lovely face appeared in his thoughts every other heartbeat. he couldn't get her off his mind, and yet she was already mothering some other tom's kits. unfair, really. but tidalhaunt didn't want to dwell on things past. it was done, and there was no changing the fact that he had heard what was probably the truth. but there was one thing that really left him hurt and confused, and that was that he had seen her, rounded belly and all, and had judged her to be over a moon into her pregnancy. almost two, surely she would have them in no time? and the part that confused him the most was that they were still mating two moons ago, a happy- if forbidden- couple without a care in the world. their breakup had been recent and stung still. had she cheated? and that would've made sense, if the tempestclan tom didn't know his former lover better than that. hauntedsky was elusive and ghostly as her name suggested, but he never thought it possible for her to be cruel or unjust. she was so smart, so smooth, and so keen on the little things. as much as he mulled it over, tidalhaunt couldn't understand how she could stomp on his heart like this, especially when he thought there was really love in their relationship. it hadn't worked out for obvious reasons- their clans setting them apart with a fued caused by murder, but he had never thought of it as a simple fling.
these thoughts were plaguing the tom's conscience while he laid, sprawled out, at the back of the cavern where most cats seemed to avoid in favor of exploring the caves and tunnels, or hunting the meager prey among the rocky terrain. here he had made a makeshift nest though, and after a long day of training his apprentice followed by a patrol, he was ready for a relaxing evening. however, as soon as he had flopped down in the pile of dry leaves and cave-moss, he had remembered why he kept so busy in the first place. hauntedsky. he hated to admit it, letting a girl get such a firm hold on him, but she had and now his heart felt broken. more broken now than when they had initially called off their forbidden relationship, because now he felt hurt and betrayed rather than sensible and mature, making the right decision. the black and white warrior felt now as thought all that maturity had gone out the window with his moping about, but he couldn't shake the hurt away, and every time he saw her, gracefully carrying her belly full of kits, he felt another jolt of aches in his chest. sighing, he rested his head upon his forepaws, staring dully out at the rest of the huge camp.

forever and always
Each day she got out of her nest less often for the energy required to drag her large belly around steep paths was getting to be overwhelming. Panaceaheart had told her that the kits should be due soon and more than anything she wanted to have them. For one she would get to meet her beautiful babies. Secondly, she would be more mobile again and not have to worry about holding everyone up. Stretching her forepaws out in front of her the mottled female yawned and blinked sleep from her eyes. There was a small bird left by her nest and she assumed an apprentice had been sent to leave it there for her. She hated being so dependent on others compared to how she would normally be. Even now she felt a little uneasy with the nests of her den mates lying empty, her den mates being Pounceflash and Panaceaheart. Right now she knew she would be so lost if she didn’t have them but they had known her for so long she was sure that both of them knew that even without her telling them. Frowning down at the bird she began to pluck feathers from it before biting into it. She wasn’t exactly hungry but she knew she wasn’t just eating for herself anymore so she forced it down.
Frowning in the silence she counted down in her head and pulled herself to her paws. It was a tight squeeze to get her belly out of the cave but she managed it and when she was out she spotted their father straight ahead of her. For a moment she wanted to go backwards but she had already told her sister that she would tell Tidalhaunt the truth, plus when the kits were born she wanted them to have their father. ”Hi, Tidalhaunt.” She called to him as she waddled over, flopping over next to him. Under normal circumstances she would have remained standing but she could not afford to waste that kind of energy and she assumed he would understand. ”I came to tell you the truth.” She began, gathering her confidence and looking him in the eye. ”Now that the divide between our clans has disappeared there is really no reason for me to lie to protect the kits for any longer. Tidalhaunt-“ She paused a little nervous of saying it out loud. ”These kits are yours and I want – I need – you to be there to bring them up.”

though his eyelids were slowly drooping, a nap threatening to sneak up on him, the tom's thoughts were still buzzing, buzzing.. until he resolved to get up and do something about it. seek her out, perhaps, or run and hide. he inwardly smiled, how silly. it was simple heartache- he was sure everyone went through it at least once in their lives, and surely things would turn up for him once this all passed over! when he healed, maybe he could find a she-cat in his own clan who would never betray him or hurt him, and have kits of his own, and forget all about hauntedsky.... in his current state, it didn't seem possible, but thinking sensibly tidalhaunt knew that it wouldn't be long before he'd be alright. after all, it hadn't taken long at all before his former lover had moved on, and he would too.
these thoughts were rolling around his head over and over again, driving him crazy until his teal-kissed eyes opened wide, shocked to see a bitterly familiar figure approaching him. it was no accident- nocat wandered to the back of the cavern unless they meant to be there. he shivered and looked up, blinking innocently at the tortoiseshell's growing belly dappled orange and ebony. her soft gaze was radiant, and he swallowed when he met her eyes with his own. hi tidalhaunt. his name sounded strange on her tongue after all this time, though he'd heard it a million times before. "hello." he answered formally, wondering what she wanted. to make amends? well surely he couldn't say no, but he needed time. he was about to open his mouth to say that when she began to speak instead, and unleashed a torrential bit of news to him that left him utterly speechless. "I.." he stuttered, wondering how to react to that. kits? his? his own kits? their own kits? grasping for something to say, he could only nod. "of course, of course hauntedsky I would do anything for you," he paused for a moment, "come live with me in tempestclan. voidstar will understand, and we need a medicine cat-"
the black and white tom was thinking quickly now, his hopes rising with every passing heartbeat. it was all too good to be true, he kneeded the ground with his claws, "your sister would be able to come, what about that? she would be our medicine cat, you would be my mate." he was nodding again, a faint smile beginning to tug at the corners of his maw. "what do you think?" he was becoming ecstatic. this was too much. everything that had been crushing him for the past several moons had been brushed away like that. was she serious? it now made sense, the timing of her pregnancy. he didn't think her capable of lying, he gazed into her eyes, his own teal orbs brimming with affection. he wondered if she still loved him, or if she was only admitting this for the kits. hauntedsky was so reserved, it was hard for him to tell. "well you don't have to come and live as my mate, of course. we don't have to decide that now, but your- our kits would have the protection of the clan, and we could both raise them." he added sensibly. he didn't want to rush her into decisions, especially now, with something so special blossoming in her belly, ready to decide her fate.
