Clouds aboved swirled and twisted, like the hair on a feral cat. They matted into clumps, threatening to deposit their possessions among any unlucky passer by below. Fawnleaf looked up wearily, her eyes searching for any signs of dangerous rain, or snow. The weather was cold enough, and had been for almost a moon or two now. A couple flakes of snow had already fallen upon the barren, cold Earth, making shelter from the harsh sunlight among thick brambles and thickets. A few shallow craters lay outside VertigoClan camp borders, barely filled in. They gave Fawnleaf cause to worry.
Because there was something she must protect. Something she needed to keep safe until the time came. When that time would be, she did not know- for it was not she who had control over it; rather Silverpelt and StarClan. But until that time arrived, it was her responsibility to protect the items given to and conceived by herself. Her body had even accustomed to shelter the gifts, preparing to bare with the added weight and troubles. Fawnleaf, however, was not. She had asked around, been sociable, to other queens and previous mothers. She had asked what kit-bearing was like, and how she could make the best of it. Unfortunately, although most were kind to the otherwise-quiet she-cat, she had unfortunate luck and did not receive word of many tips or hints. And yet, the she-cat still prevailed, for she would let nothing discourage her.
Her belly had grown- swollen to the size of a watermelon. Even other queens had commented lightly on the size she was now- and how she had 'better lay off the mice.' Fawnleaf herself had not found it funny, but she bemused her simple clanmates anyways, with a slight, hearty laugh anyway. The queen-to-be couldn't help but wonder just how many she was expecting. She knew that she had gotten herself into trouble by mating with Epiloguefrost, but she had no idea, nor plans, to start a family. Not at first- anyway. For she did love the strange warrior, with all of her heart, and although family was not her first intention, she knew it was one of his. Alas, he was not the one carrying the little bundles- she was. And the VertigoClan she-cat could swear, each one kicked her twice a day. She didn't mind, it didn't hurt that bad. But even by counting, she still had no idea just how many children she would soon be responsible for- the idea somewhat terrified her. However, she knew her mate would be by her side through it all; thick and thin. And that was the one, miniscule pinch of comfort she found in the tedious task of caring for the kits.
Moving for what felt like the first time that day, the plump queen slowly made way to the fresh-kill pile. She had been warned not to stray from the nursery, but the calico did not feel like being helpless. All her life, she had been taught that although a clan was like kin, no, was your kin, you still had to take care of yourself- every cat did. Fawnleaf had been quite the independent feline, before Epiloguefrost arrived. She was, afterward, too. But now, she was feeling helpless, unable to move much in her current state. Still, she wanted to prove that she wasn't Epiloguefrost's mate- the helpless queen. No, she wanted to prove that she was Fawnleaf- the independent queen. Struggling, however, the she-cat crept along the ground, belly pressed closely to the Earth, toward the fresh-kill pile.
Her teeth had just barely grazed the whimsy, deflated sack of skin around a finch when she collapsed gently, careful not to harm her kits. Dragging the finch to her maw, she picked at slowly, avoiding eye contact with other felines. She did not wish for conversation, she did not wish for invitation. She simply wished for peace and quiet- and her mate. Although it was quite unlikely the two would come hand-in-hand. Alas, a feline could dream; and that's exactly what Fawnleaf was doing, as she picked apart her meal.
