let us die young or let us live forever Dawn was breaking over the forest, lighting every sleeping feline and every feline that sat, awake, praying for its warmth. It had been two days since Fatesong's three kits, Veilpaw, Rowanpaw, and Dewpaw, had been made apprentices. Now they shared a den with three other cats, no longer curling up against a warm sable pelt. The six apprentices were all pressed together in their den, breathing evenly as they slept. The apprentice den was well sheltered and cozy, with tall, arching ferns protecting it above from poor weather. The green leaves closed in on every side, but a few beams of light managed to creep in through gaps in the top. Beneath the fronds, the sandy ground had been dug out, a few mouse lengths deep. This provided even better shelter from the wind and kept them all that much warmer. Veilpaw hadn't known about it when he first ducked under the broad leaves, and had stumbled downward, landing ungracefully in a heap and waking two of the older apprentices. Now, he was the first to wake, as some of the rising sun's rays landed on his closed lids. Yellow eyes flashed open, then closed against the fiery brightness. Veilpaw resolved to find a new position among the ferns tonight, turning his head to shield his eyes. It wouldn't be comfortable, to wake every dawn with blinded eyes. Veilpaw blinked away the white hot light, then glanced around. Slowly, he took in the other cats sleeping around him with a drowsy half smile. On one side, a ginger and white tom, just smaller than himself, slept. Right away Veilpaw identified him as Rowanpaw, his own brother. He turned to his opposite side and took in their small sister, Dewpaw, with her messy tortoiseshell fur. The other three cats were less well known to him. Farthest away was a gray tom, not very much larger than Veilpaw himself, with fur that looked as shiny as a kittypet's. Glenpaw. He thought silently, before looking to Rosepaw, a female sleeping on the other side of his brother. She was near the same size as Glenpaw, if not more awkwardly large, with a very soft ginger pelt. The other female, and the last he saw, was Crystalpaw. She dozed on the other side of Dewpaw, not far from Glenpaw. Veilpaw found himself already quite attracted to the young, pretty she-cat. She was a cream tabby, and her eyes, though closed, were easy to remember for their remarkably beautiful blue hue. He took a natural disliking to Glenpaw, while he hoped that he and Rosepaw might be friends. There was trouble going on in the clan, and they might not be training today, which was hard for the new apprentices. Still, Veilpaw reasoned, perhaps it would give time to better acquaint himself with the other cats.
There wasn't much room within the tall ferns to stretch, for all of the cats were mostly squashed together, in a mass of fur. The young gray tom-cat stepped tentatively over Rowanpaw, dodged Rosepaw, and made his way through the leaves. They rustled faintly as he passed, and he guessed that the others would be awake soon. Stepping from their warm shade and into the new morning air, he shivered despite his long gray fur. Veilpaw's back arched and his jaws parted in a very wide yawn, paws pushing out in front of him as he stretched. It was comfy and safe between his littermates, and he would have liked to remain sleeping, but he had stiffened over the night and knew that even if Hallowstar wouldn't be able to train with him today, he should wake early anyway. So far, the leader, and his mentor, had shown him the territory. They had yet to train, and he was itching for their first session. Usually the tom was more laid back, more patient, than this. But what could he help it? He had only been named Veilpaw, losing the name of Veilkit, two nights ago. He wanted to show progress; he wanted to make his mother and the warriors proud of him, and he especially wanted to impress Hallowstar. He couldn't do that if he wasn't even on his way to becoming a warrior; sure, he was growing, but he wasn't learning. Not enough. He wanted to hunt and fight, not learn to identify the clans by smell. Of course, the young tom would never rush the siamese leader. Luckily he had been taught far better respect than this. It's getting hard to wait, though.

Glenpaw And I don't want the world to see me Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's meant to be broken I just want you to know who I am.[/i]
A faint rustle in the leaves of the warm den awakened the charcoal tom from his slumber. Good time too, I was just about to fall out of a tree. He thought quietly. He looked over at the sleeping cream tabby she-cat on his left, Crystalpaw. He smiled under his tough maw and reached his tail out to brush her fur on her back, softly waking her. He didn't want to just yell at her and force her to get up, even if he wanted to yell at the others. He sighed and stood to stretch his back out, carefully brushing the ferns above him. He shrunk down to his normal large size and flexed his paws next. He was stiff from sleeping in his warm nest all night. He looked around the den at the apprentices sleeping. Of course, the apprentice that saw Jaspersun, Crystalpaw's mentor, murdered: Rosepaw. She was much more of the silent type and Glenpaw really hated how she screamed to the clan about Jaspersun's death. She was so immature. Glancing past her, he saw Rowanpaw. One of Fatesong's annoying kits. She was not help herself. She was whiny and ignorant. Rowanpaw was super annoying and just plain stupid. Ignoring the tom altogether, he glanced at the she-cat that slept near him: Dewpaw. The runt of Fatesong's pathetic litter. She was hyper and itched his skin. He had to share Bearclaw, his mentor, with her. She drove him up the wall. Yesterday, Bearclaw took he and Dewpaw out for her first training session. She wanted so much from Bearclaw, hanging on him paw and claw. Glenpaw followed reluctantly, but Bearclaw was a good spirit to him. He liked Bearclaw. But that rat, Dewpaw. She was too much energy for him. Too much ignorance-like her mother. Taking no more notice of the pathetic scrap of fur sleeping, he noted that the den next to her was empty. Veilpaw. He was the worst out of all the kits. Hallowstar took it upon himself to mentor Veilpaw and now the black tom thought he was the whole rage. He was nothing. He was a little smaller than Glenpaw and he was very fluffy with yellow eyes. The differences between him and Veilpaw? Plenty. Veilpaw had all of his kit fur still, Glenpaw had shiny, handsome, thin charcoal hair. Veilpaw had yellow eyes, Glenpaw had honey eyes that lured cats into him. Veilpaw's pelt was detailed much, Glenpaw had a white muzzle and white paws. Veilpaw was immature and arrogant, Glenpaw was smarter than he was and he was stronger. He could go on for moons about how much better he was than Veilpaw. Veilpaw. The name was bitter on Glenpaw's tongue.
The name rotted away in the back of his head when he turned to look back at Crystalpaw. She was rustling a little, probably from his tail swiping softly over her shoulders. Glenpaw blinked his eyes drowsily and awaited her to wake up. She'd had a long, rough few days. Her mentor was gone, not that she was very sad about it, but he still cared about her. Once seeing her eyes flickered, he lowered himself and whispered in her ear quietly, "Good morning." Looking back up, he awaited her to awake from her sleep. She was his best friend. Surprising as that had turned out. He hated cats usually, but something about Crystalpaw made him happier than most cats turned him into. She was his only friend. It would stay that way.

Crystalpaw had a different mentor now. This was her third mentor in a short space of time. Streamfall, then Jaspersun. Now her mentor was Fatesong, Veilpaw, Rowanpaw and Dewpaw's mother, a loner who had joined the clan with the three when they were kits. And because of that, her training hadn't progressed as much as others might have. Fatesong would jump right into the training, she knew, so she'd catch up quite quickly. Of course, she had gained in understanding of how things went, but she was still awkwardly oblivious to a lot of things. She could admit that. Veilpaw, Rowanpaw and Dewpaw. The three certainly filled up the den.
A light stroking motion across her cream fur interrupted her dreamy thoughts. She shifted a little, frowning in her sleep, and curled her tail around herself, half-covering her face. Who was it? The motion was soft, but felt almost protective. She still had her eyes shut, dozing and trying not to wake up. She was tired, even after lying in her nest for the whole night she hadn't managed to get much sleep. It was mainly due to her own thoughts, but also the rustling of all the other apprentices shifting as they slept. These days, she found it quite hard to fall into a deep sleep - or any sleep at all; her own little worries drove any thoughts of sleep away. Thoughts of the clan, thoughts of her father, thoughts of the other apprentices, thoughts of the clan. She got more energy as the day wore on, occupying herself with patrols and assisting the elders, which was not the most pleasant job, and any other things she had to do. But by the light of the moon she was ready to flop down in her nest and get some shut-eye that still never seemed to come. Most nights she did eventually fall asleep, but sleep wasn't registered in her mind and she was still tired the next day. She wasn't grumpy from lack of sleep, but her energy was low by the end of the day. A little nap here and there helped. She didn't like being woken up.
"Good morning."
Crystalpaw stirred. Blinking open her blue eyes, she turned her head around to see Glenpaw's dark grey tail draped over her flank. She frowned. What did he think he was doing? "'Scuse me," she mumbled quietly as she dragged herself into a sitting position. His tail slid down from her side to the ground. She looked away. A yawn escaped her maw as she drew up a paw to groom herself. Eyes half shut, Crystalpaw pulled her paw slowly across her face to wash it and in an attempt to wake herself up. Looking around, she saw that five of the six apprentices were lying about in the early morning light. Veilpaw wasn't in sight. Where was he? He seemed to be a nice tom, if she did say so herself. Resting near to her were Dewpaw and, of course, Glenpaw. Lowering herself down and tucking her fore-paws under her chest, she blinked as she tried to avoid the sun's bright glare. Her drowsiness wore off slightly and she could think a little more clearly.

A slight rustling roused her sleeping form, and as she pushed up from the ground into a hunched sitting position, her eyes caught on the other apprentices. Wordlessly, she stood up, shaking her bodice slightly before beginning to walk. Her creamy paws slipped over the ground lightly, with just a single slip of tentativity in the large apprentice's ginger dusted form. Silver-tinted blue eyes looking out at the world in a new sort of way, Rosepaw felt confused. Emotions swirled within her, and the apprentice struggled slightly with what she should do next. Courage and pride soared highly within herself, but she felt the ghost of the cat she had been before silently watching from a place hidden deep within her.
The sun glinted on her pelt with its bright shining rays and Rosepaw found that her paws had carried her to other apprentices. She blinked at them awkwardly, but opened her mouth to speak almost instantly. "Morning.
[/u]" The words slipped out her maw without any hesistance, reluctance, or stutter. Tail tip twitching with glee, she tucked in her back legs and sat down on the ground, proceeding to scrape at a patch of her shoulder fur with her tongue. Its hooked edges caught the miniscule tangles in her medium-length coat, and she kept her ears perked for any bits of conversation in case she might be able to jump in anywhere.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Dewpaw Life's one great game; We're all born to play.
Finally! Finally the day had come and gone for Dewpaw and her two brothers to be apprenticed; it was hard to believe that two days were already passed since the ceremony. The scenes of the ceremony still played often in her dreams, although they were somewhat jumbled up with the images of other recent events. After all, quite a lot had happened that same day, what with Rosepaw coming into camp - right after Hallowstar had finished - to announce Jaspersun's death. The she-cat was sad to hear of a clanmate's being killed (was murder the better word for it?), but she couldn't say she'd been particularly attached to the tabby and white tom, having only known him mostly through his occasional visits to the nursery and Fatesong's stories. Still, it was a loss that struck her if only through the reactions of cats who'd known him better. Poor Crystalpaw...
The apprentice slept soundly in the den. even if it wasn't quite that warm, familiar place yet like the nursery had once been. It was comfy, at least, and there was no need for the cats to worry too much about the cold with so many of them in one place. Besides, after the trek Bearclaw had taken Dewpaw and Glenpaw on yesterday, even finding the den unfriendly wouldn't have kept her from sleeping. So she was disappointed when a faint shuffling noise and the distant hum of voices roused her from a restful sleep. Ears pricked, she listened to the quiet exchange of groggy "good morning"s before uncurling and raising her head with a wide yawn. Pale blue-green eyes squinted against the bright sunlight filtering into the den between the leaves and branches; the vague forms scattered around the den slowly took place as her vision cleared up. There was Rowanpaw, her long-legged sibling curled up beside her. He was the only apprentice still asleep, and the ginger-patched tom looked too comfortable for the tortoiseshell to feel comfortable waking him. Then she shifted her attention to the apprentices already up, letting her gaze flit over the various felines. 'There's Rosepaw grooming...' The light-furred apprentice was rather big for a she-cat, it made Dewpaw feel a bit bashful at times considering she was the smallest of all the cats; Glenpaw and Crystalpaw were sitting near each other. That still left one cat missing. "Where's Veilpaw?" Her mew was far too loud inside, even with the leaves serving to absorb some of the noise. The petite she-cat, though, failed to notice the need to tone down the volume. "Oh - and g'morning," she added as an afterthought.

let us die young or let us live forever Veilpaw was settled outside in the clearing, feeling oddly serene and peaceful as he watched night turn to dawn. He had lost himself in the abundant colors and warmth. No longer did impatient thoughts of training with Hallowstar plague him, nor did his annoyance with Glenpaw irk him. Veilpaw's long gray fur was messy, tufts pushed here and there due to his sleeping tucked between the other apprentices. He began to routinely wash, glad to have woken early enough to take the time to clean himself up. The familiar feel of it on his pelt reminded him of the last time his mother had washed him as a kit, the morning before his ceremony. It was a comforting memory, aided with his current drowsy state, so he didn't recall how she had fussed so much more over his brother Rowanpaw. Fatesong had always known that Rowanpaw was different, and while she tried not to encourage his... imaginative stories, she had always gone easier on him than she had on Veilpaw and Dewpaw. Meanwhile, the young apprentice was unaware that Glenpaw, Crystalpaw, and Rosepaw, the older apprentices, were awake and exchanging greetings. He was wrapped up in the newness of the day, and the possibilities of what might come to him this sunrise. Veilpaw was startled out of his reverie, though, when he heard an especially loud feminine voice through the ferns. Jarred fully awake by the sound of his petite sister's words, the young tom blinked his yellow eyes a few times and then smiled broadly. He turned and ducked his way back into the fern encircled den, finding that a bit of room had opened up with all of the cats awake and sitting up but Rowanpaw.
It was for the smallest of the apprentices that the big gray tom's eyes shone, as he approached his sister. Though he was not the largest there- Glenpaw had him with his age by a little, and Rosepaw was quite leggy; the contrast between the siblings was still quite significant. Veilpaw touched noses with Dewpaw, smiling. Though at times her loud voice could get rather deafening, he had always made allowances for her poor hearing, speaking more loudly to her and never scolding her or finding her an annoyance, like others might. "Good morning, Dewpaw." He meowed with faint amusement at seeing her messy tortoiseshell pelt. With that he turned to look at the others in the den, nodding briefly but amiably to both Rosepaw and Crystalpaw. "Morning, Rosepaw. Morning, Crystalpaw." To Glenpaw he made no gestures and said nothing; he knew how the darker tom felt about him, and Veilpaw felt the same way. After a moment, he decided he didn't want to start off the day with a fight, so he at last nodded a tiny nod to the tom, his tone more flat as he greeted, "Good morning, Glenpaw." and then turned back to his sister. His voice lost none of its caring for Dewpaw when he spoke, though it had been less than amicable when he gazed at the other yellow eyed tom. "I take it you slept well?" He had always been protective and loving of his sister, if at times rather jealous of Rowanpaw. As far as the other apprentices went... Well, he almost hoped he could simply become friends with Glenpaw, but the tom seemed determined to make trouble, and so there was little he could do but steer clear. However, if he asked for a fight... Well, he would get one, no doubting that.

Glenpaw And I don't want the world to see me Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's meant to be broken I just want you to know who I am.[/i]
Strikingly enough, all the apprentices, except Rowanpaw, awoke at the same time. It was like an alarm was triggered in all of their brains. The large charcoal apprentice flicked his tail however and gazed back over to the entrance where Veilpaw slipped back in. Glenpaw didn't take a liking to Veilpaw as soon as he was brought into the clan. His mother, Fatesong, was incredibly annoying and feeble and weak, but Hallowstar took a liking to her-whatever. He would let the leader have his fun, but he knew that Veilpaw was ever so happy to be Hallowstar's apprentice. He took too much into thinking about being the leader's apprentice. If he were Glenpaw's apprentice, why, he'd scratch the living daylights out of the tom to show him who's really the leader in the clan. Veilpaw was just so, so, so arrogant. So much like any cat that didn't belong to a clan, and that was exactly who he was. A cat that didn't belong to a clan. Whatever happened to that tom, he'd be sorry. Twitching his ears, he let Veilpaw say "morning" to everyone, including himself. Although, Veilpaw's voice was dry and flat like he thought he was better than Glenpaw. Glenpaw, however, wasn't going to let the stupid apprentice get the best of him. "Morning Veilpaw."
He rolled his eyes over to where Crystalpaw sat up from where she lay. Had he been too nice to her in his early greeting? No matter, he'd fix that. "You fancy actually talking today or are you just going to sulk like normal?" Glenpaw grumbled to her when he pulled away from her, almost...no...was that hurt? Was he hurt that she had pulled away from him? No, he didn't get hurt. He was better than any other apprentice in the den. Especially Veilpaw. The little apprentice took more notice of his sister than he did his clanmates. Glenpaw was an orphan, he had no one. He was proud of that too. No, no he wasn't. He-he couldn't be proud to be an orphan. What made him tick? What made him cry? What made him dream helplessly? Telling him he was alone. It wasn't his fault his sister, Ivypaw, was gone. He didn't mean it. He didn't mean to...kill her. It was a simple accident. Now he was alone forever and always he supposed. Crystalpaw, his one friend that'd probably leave him. Rosepaw, a quiet she-cat with nothing on her mind but death. Rowanpaw, a pathetic excuse of a cat. Dewpaw, an annoying, boisterous apprentice that he had had to share Bearclaw with for a while. Veilpaw, the incredibly rude and annoying tom. He would pick a fight with Veilpaw if he was given the chance. He would do anything to be better than Veilpaw. It was true, his future would hold more than a cat deserved and Veilpaw wouldn't be a part of it.

"Morning, Rosepaw. Morning, Crystalpaw."
She turned her head to see that Veilpaw had appeared. She just gazed blankly at him and her almost unblinking blue eyes followed him as he made his way over to Dewpaw. Crystalpaw looked away and shuffled her paws. It wasn't too chilly but there was a breeze and that didn't go well with her tiredness. Crystalpaw blinked her heavy eyes lazily and sighed. The day was fresh and the air crisp, but that didn't necessarily mean she would have to jump up the moment her eyes opened and go off on patrol, or out hunting. She had time to rouse herself; there was no rush. And for that she was grateful. She would fall asleep on the job if she had to go out of camp and that would be quite the embarrassment. As most of the other apprentices greeted each other, Crystalpaw watched in silence.
"Morning Veilpaw."
Crystalpaw looked sharply at Glenpaw. She knew that Veilpaw and Glenpaw had an on-going battle over who was the best, or something - which seemed silly to Crystalpaw - but did he have to start off the morning by being irritable? What was his problem with Veilpaw? She couldn't see anything to be wrong with him. At least he had greeted Glenpaw, even if he sounded as if it was forced - Glenpaw returned it with a tone dripping in sarcasm. She knew that Glenpaw thought quite highly of himself - he had shown her that much when they met. He could be caring though. It was possible - but obviously not when Veilpaw was around. It disappointed her that they wouldn't get along. But ever since Veilpaw became an apprentice Glenpaw seemed to be more broody. Their little competition wasn't to her liking, but she had no involvement in it and didn't intend on getting involved.
"You fancy actually talking today or are you just going to sulk like normal?"
Crystalpaw replied to his comment with only a nonchalant glance in his direction. He wasn't too happy to be cut-off and was obviously still grumpy after waking up. She didn't want to spark his anger, but she was sure the presence of Veilpaw would be enough for that. But where his earlier affection come from? It was quite uncharacteristic of Glenpaw. Usually he would stay in his broody silence, but now? Was it a protective gesture? She didn't need to be protected, or guarded. Was it mood-swings? Or had she done something to annoy him? Yes, she had sat up away from him, but that wasn't something to get ticked off for. But with Glenpaw, she knew that was how things went. He was very self-righteous. Letting out a breath, she looked around. Veilpaw was with his sister, Dewpaw, a small, but loud she-cat. Crystalpaw found her company likable, it was nicer than the unsettled air that hung between Veilpaw and Glenpaw. The breeze stirred her senses and brought scents of prey in it, but didn't make her want to get out and go after them. It was too early. She just hoped she couldn't have to help the elders this morning.
