His chest was heaving, and his long gray pelt was tangled and messy, but he felt an odd sense of calm. It was the feeling of serenity in a storm, serenity in chaos. Of course, he wasn't a bloodthirsty murderer. In fact, in all of his moons, Hailghost had killed only once before. He did remember, however, having the same feeling then as he did now. "How much more settled I feel after a kill. It's almost disgusting." And so it was; for another warrior, small in death, lay quite mangled along the border edge. The tom had deep ginger coloring, though it was hard to see with how his fur had been treated; his eyes, had they flickered open right then for another dance, would have gleamed emerald. That very thought and vivid imagery made a shiver settle on Hailghost's spine. It wouldn't happen, of course; Jaspersun's heartbeat had stopped quite a while ago. His crimson scent would mingle with the Celestialclan markers for, probably, moons. It would always be there, his cruel reminder; for the Tempestclan tom's scent was all over the border too, from the tussle he had had with his opponent. In his mind, the act was justified. As he saw it, the young, foolhardy warrior had been picking a fight with death, hassling such an older, larger warrior over the border. Surely when he had called out a challenge to Hailghost, with many more moons of experience and much harsher motives, he had known it was suicide? The gray warrior might have suspected that even more, had he known that only a moon earlier, Jaspersun's brother Copperclaw had been killed in an unfortunate accident. But accidents were accidents, as far as he was concerned. Hailghost hadn't killed another warrior in moons, possibly since he was far younger; and it wasn't so much that he loved the thrill of it, (he didn't) but that it made him calmer and more relaxed. The problem with it was now that he had no genuine remorse. Oh, he might have been slightly concerned as to how things would go from here. What would his high and mighty sister, the deputy, have to say? What would his little cousin think? How would Voidstar punish him? Perhaps this is just what we need to reestablish ourselves in the forest. He thought rather craftily, standing to abandon the body. All that was left of his fun was the memories of the fight.
It hadn't been a fair fight. Hailghost had almost, he would judge, twenty moons of experience on Jaspersun. He was much taller and much bulkier, and he had been trained in Tempestclan, which was a bloodthirsty advantage in itself. Still, he hadn't set out to kill anyone. He was just minding his business, walking the borders, when the tabby tom had issued a challenge, though he was clearly in his territory. This had of course annoyed him greatly, and since he was already in a terrible mood, he had consulted to fight with the youth. Not much later, with just one chest heaving and one heart beating, the fight was finished. He hadn't killed in cold blood, it had been a spur of the moment thing, but he hadn't stopped himself as he bit into his victim's throat, either. What did that make him? An opportunistic killer, maybe. I like the sound of it. So, having analyzed the situation poorly, he moved away from the body and into the deep shade of a nearby tree, to groom himself. Even without remorse, it was grim to remain so close to the murdered Celestialclan warrior, and he would rather wash his scarlet stained fur in peace.
OOC. So, this is just my takin' care of Jaspersun, lead where it may. If you have a nosy Celestialclan cat, they might have witnessed the death and go back to tell their clan? Or similarly, your TC cat could have seen them fighting and went back to tell Tempestclan, but when they return with reinforcements to end the fight they find Hailghost calmly washing himself?

Without a reliable mentor, the softspoken female didn't get caught up in too much, and more often than not the only socializing she accomplished was the polite chatter between patrol members. On this fine summer day, the pale ginger cameo tabby apprentice had been wandering close to the TempestClan border as the humidity sapped her strength and left her lusting after a lazy doze in the shade.
Opening her jaws wide to let out a yawn, her grey-blue eyes watered as she lifted her gaze to the trees above on the sloped land, a small, contented smile gracing her youthful face as she listened to the birdsong. That's why, when the pretty trilling between the winged creatures suddenly stopped, that Rosepaw was able to hear the sounds of cats fighting.
Every bit of her exhaustion fading in an instant, the large apprentice's veins surged with adrenaline as she raced toward the hissing and spitting of two cats engaging in battle. Scenting the air, there was no mistaking the tang of blood in the air along with TempestClan and CelestialClan, fresh, not just the border markers. But, as soon as Rosepaw had gotten close enough to see anything, all she noticed was a grey nebelung tom grooming himself, an unnerving calmness about him.
Shivering, the she-cat's eyes caught on a familiar ginger pelt strewn haphazardly next to him, and her breath caught. 'Jaspersun?!' Gasping quietly, the young femme froze in place, eyes wide with fear as she stared at the tom that had just murdered her clanmate. "Oh my. |
" Whispered the apprentice, before clambering noiselessly into the undergrowth near her. ' What am I going to do?' She asked herself, emotions crashing together in fearful waves. Rosepaw had just put herself in danger, and, as the winds shifted, her scent would be carried to the tom, but she was too young and occupied with the scene she had just witnessed to adjust her position or realize what a terrible mistake it was to stand there stupidly pondering what she might do next.[/div] [atrb=width,140] tagged ,

The large gray tom, pulling his mangled fur into place, stopped mid-wash. The wind changed and pressed toward him. Out through his jaws he breathed huskily a warm breath, and let the new air flow into his parted maw, past fangs gleaming from saliva and perhaps blood. A spiderweb of apprehension fell over his cold amber eyes. Oops. I've been discovered quickly, haven't I? A hypothetical question, of course. There was no one around to ask, and he knew it had been quick. Either he was looking at another fight, possibly another kill- the thought of slaughter wasn't pleasant to him- or he was looking at some nosy little brat that had tagged along after his victim. Ahem, opponent. Of course, his body language betrayed none of his thoughts. He was in the zone, wired, energy pulsing within but at this point easily controlled. Unbridled by another challenge, well, Hailghost hadn't thought of what would happen. A rampage? Would it just keep going on endlessly, the appearance of more cats that would challenge him, until at last either one bested him or he had killed them all? Well, to Russet with them! Celestialclan are meat to be wasted. He thought rather bitterly, pressing his raised paw to the ground and switching his eyes to gaze past the body of Jaspersun.
And there, well, it was the latter! Not another fight, but some puny little brat, some sass that was raised to believe her clan was the best. Hailghost could teach the apprentice a lesson in nothing flat; but he wouldn't be able to control the results, and two deaths to be punished for was certainly worth more than one. Feeling rather cruel as these realizations washed him anew, rubbed already sore wounds, he turned and thrust his head toward her hiding place aggressively. "You may as well come out, song bird. I've smelled you now, and if you run, I'll only catch you." He was game for a chase; the only thing was with smaller cats was that they could usually run faster, and he was certain that was what was up. Still, an empty threat said in a deep, malice tinged voice could never sour his mood. He was discovered, and so Hailghost was destined to keep digging the hole deeper, getting himself in worse, rather than pleading his innocence. His name was written all over the crime; he had done the deed, and it would soon be time to pay the price. Eyeing the undergrowth close by with playfully mean amber knives, the gray tom hissed through his teeth, calling her out to come and face him.

The grass around her fallen comrade was painted with blood, thickening more and more as it dried. Rosepaw's stomach kept performing flip-flops as she watched him, and her entire body tensed and she felt ill when he spoke. "S-song bird? |
" The young female managed to choke out before tripping a bit over her own lanky forepaws as she revealed herself from her not-so-seclusive hiding spot. " I am not a s-song bird, I am a m-member of CelestialClan and you've killed my clanmate." Rosepaw replied, her stuttering not as bad as it usually was. Facing this dangerous tom head on, she discovered a newfound courage, and her silvery periwinkle eyes were stony as she solemnly gawked at the TempestClan warrior before her. Were they all as terrible as this? The pale ginger female shuddered at the thought, her eyes shutting for a moment before flashing back open in an instant. " I'll warn you now that I'm also a fast runner, and that I d-do have the upperhand there." Spat the femme, taking a step back, refusing the urge to taunt the tom anymore. Rosepaw could fight all she want, and for her Clan and Jaspersun, she wanted to, but this grey tom would rip her to shreds in nearly half the time that it had taken to do in the other ginger cat. Eyes narrowing, for the first time in her life, instead of shrugging and letting her posture fall so that she might not appear her full size, Rosepaw stood tall, arching into what was her natural height. The CelestialClan apprentice was over half the TempestClan warrior's size, and an expression of shock as well as a partial smirk flickered across her face before she glowered at him with narrowed eyes once more. " What name should I give my Clan when they cry out to avenge our clanmate? Or do you not have enough courage to kill and tell?" Rosepaw quipped arrogantly, waiting a few seconds before whipping about and streaking to the trees, her breathing becoming heavy as she began to run for her life.[/div] [atrb=width,140] tagged ,

She had wandered silently out of camp, going for a simple walk. Her little paws trod softly on the ground as she made her way through the territory. Perhaps she shouldn't have left on her own without informing anyone, but she was a bit away from camp now. To be truthful, she had no idea where she was going, but knew the way back at any rate. A slightly familiar scent crossed her path and Crystalpaw frowned. It was her mentor, Jaspersun. She wondered what he was doing. She trotted after his scent, unaware she was headed for the boarders. Her tail was dragging on the ground as always when she came across another scent. It was also somewhat familiar. Rosepaw. Was there a patrol? No, Rosepaw was on the hunting patrol and Jaspersun on the boarder. The frown didn't fade from the apprentice's face as she came ever-closer to the boarder. The smell of blood filled her nostrils in a suffocating embrace. It mingled with the smell of death and sent a shiver down her spine. She wasn't sure if she wanted to continue. The smell was creepy, but the clan should know what happened if there was anything to report.
She knew that she was close to the Tempestclan boarder now. But the sight that met her eyes was not pretty. No, quite the opposite. She saw her mentor in a heap, bloodied and still. Her eyes drifted over to a tom that sat nearby. She narrowed her blue eyes at him. He was not from Celestialclan anyway, so he must be from Tempestclan, she thought. He was grooming himself and had an air of disturbing calm about him. He was the culprit. She felt the anger rise inside herself. But he was a danger to her, she was in danger now. He was a murderer and she was sitting here doing nothing?
"You may as well come out, song bird. I've smelled you now, and if you run, I'll only catch you."
Crystalpaw's breathing stopped. And nearly so too did her heart. He knew she was there. He was a threat, he was dangerous, he was right there in front of her and she was at risk. But he wouldn't cross the boarder, would he? Though, if he had killed another warrior, would he not feel at leisure to cross the boarder? She wanted to turn and run now, but couldn't. She crouched, rooted to the spot. She couldn't show herself. She would be too vulnerable and would look tiny next to this tom.
"S-song bird?"
That was Rosepaw. Her eyes widened in surprise. Wasn't she supposed to be a quiet, timid she-cat? Sure, she was stuttering, but she held a confident stance. She blinked as she listened to Rosepaw. Crystalpaw began to back up slowly, silently. She turned and ran fast, as fast as she could, away from the boarder and back the way she had come. She lost Rosepaw's last words as she streaked away from the scene, pulse thumping in her ears so that she couldn't hear a thing. She felt like a coward compared to Rosepaw. But had she just left her there? Crystalpaw slowed up to hear if they were still talking, but she didn't hear them. She didn't hear Rosepaw anyway. She must have run.
That tom had made it look so natural to be grooming himself beside his kill. His kill! The thought sent cold shivers through her. And he seemed so calm that it frustrated her. Why would he just kill another like that? Was there really a need for it? Wasn't it against the warrior code, or something, to kill another warrior without a good reason? Crystalpaw wasn't too clear on this code thingy not being clan-born, but surely it was wrong just to kill another?
But Jaspersun was dead, gone. Her mentor was no longer. Why was it that everyone she came to know left her? Her mother was dead. Thanks to her father. Who knew about her brother. Jaspersun was gone. He had been a nice mentor. She just hoped she didn't get one of those mentors that didn't seem to care either way what happened to her. Who would be her mentor now? But the very thought made her feel guilty. It was so disrespectful toward Jaspersun.

He had listened without attentiveness as she spoke, going back to washing himself with eerie calm, even a bit of laziness. Certainly her tone was not that of a long rambling speech, broken here and there and showing emotion strongly, but he just couldn't bring himself to pay any attention. Hailghost couldn't see his fighting with an apprentice- he did, after all, have some honor, if not more than to kill a clan cat- and so he figured it was either a long conversation, involving her spitting insults and being fearful and angry, or her turning to flee as she should, before he got half a mind to shut her up for good. Of course, either way it would lead to her running, because she was intelligent, he could see that, and thus she did run, giving a last flippant remark. Hailghost was not impressed by her show of wit or bravery. It was no courage to shout such threatening cries if you were simply going to turn tail and run away. He could tell by how well he heard her breathing, loud and plunging, that she was at a dead run. Such a run was intended for the purpose of saving one's tail, a breakneck, life or death run, one that nearly brought a cat's lungs to ruin. She'll certainly be back to camp quickly to squeal. Ah, well. Win some lose some. His fur was still rather messily groomed, but he finished with his shoulder and thought about returning to Tempestclan. Certainly he couldn't make it back as quickly as she would. I should have asked for her name, I think. She's small and weak now, but she has potential. Wait until she's a warrior, I suppose, and I'll get mine. The thought wasn't particularly worrying. The only thing that worried him was what Voidstar might say or do, though that also wasn't a pressing matter. Punishment was punishment, and he supposed it was just. After all, relations betwixt Celestialclan and Tempestclan weren't well, and this could only deepen the gap between them. Hailghost gazed back a last time at Jaspersun with vague remorse; he was sorry that he had to kill him, but it had been too tempting, and, in the end, the ginger had asked for it. Taunted him, really, which the gray warrior couldn't stand. So he had killed him, just like that. Who knew that some cute little female would wander along to help avenge him? He can't have meant much to the clan; he seemed one of the most annoying cats I've ever met. Is it just her loyalty to her clanmates, as I have mine? Sighing, as he was tired with the issues and thoughts, Hailghost turned and began to pad back to Tempestclan camp.
When he reached the camp he still smelled faintly of blood and fight, though he had splashed through much water on his way there, and his belly fur hung low, damp from the stream. Certainly some cat would ask what he had been doing, because blood, with it's rusty odor, was particular if only faintly smelled, and any cat could have tasted it on him, even a kit. He hesitated near the exit of the clearing, trying to decide whether to speak to Voidstar about the murder or to wait for someone to approach him. Hailghost looked quite murderous indeed, with his long, wet fur, and flashing, beastly saffron gaze, and a bit of crimson on his paws. This certainly won't please the purebloods. I wouldn't be surprised if I was exiled, in any other clan, but here? This is an excuse for war.
