The night was thick and opaque, the air impermeable and far too warm; so humid that each breath felt like filling one's lungs with water. Somehow, it felt alright. Not as miserable as it ought to, at least. Perhaps it was the beauty of the landscape that sprawled before her while allowed a small, secret smile to glimmer across her broad, streamlined face in the darkness. The moon had dipped down and kissed the moor's ocean of grass, swaying in the cyan blue light rather carelessly. The she-cat found herself jealous, but that wasn't a foreign feeling. She wished it away nonetheless. Still, how nice would it be one with the meadows, to have nothing on her mind but pollen and rain and the paws of hares. Fondly, she pushed along, continuing on her nightly stroll, rejoicing as the grass danced along her short tortoiseshell fur, tickling her gently.
The glacier appeared suddenly, as she crested one particularly tall knoll. It spread before her, vast and pallid blue in the deep of the evening. It was smeared through with dirt and stones, but perhaps its pure vastness made it still seem so appealing to her. After all, it was no ones land. No one was there to tell her not to cross the overwhelming ZephyrClan border markers, so she did. She would have even if there was someone there to tell her not to, but she didn't let her own stubborn nature bother her now. Pepperbreath was far too preoccupied cursing the freezing terrain that her tiny paws now trod. "What a nice place to be. Maybe I could curl up right here and wake up with a sunburn." She spoke, louder than necessary, and was startled to hear her own voice returned to her from the deep crevices of the glacier in an echo. Frowning, she turned swiftly around and trotted back to ZephyrClan's land, just barely. When she felt the warmth return to her paws at last, she turned and settled herself in the grass, facing the glacier now, content to simply watch the night take its toll on the land in peace.

A thick-furred, silver tom padded across the icy cold ground of the place the clan cats met monthly. The humidity hung in the air like a thick cloud of water and his warm sheep-like coat seemed to hold it all inside making him feel as though he wanted to burst. Ironically the place the clan cats claimed to be special had become equally special to him in times like these. As he sat on the ice the occasional droplet of water seeped through his fur and touched his skin sending millions of little tingles down his spine. Lifting a hind leg he began to scrape repeatedly at the mane of fur around his neck, resulting in clumps of silver and white fur falling to the ground with no breeze to carry them away. This was ridiculous. He had been shedding for a whole moon already and summer was just on the horizon yet he was still shedding enough fur to make another cat out of. Flattening himself out on the ice, like a cat in a car accident, he closed his eyes and let the cool radiating from the ice flow into him.
An echo carried over the ice made his ears twitch and his head rise in interest. Unable to spot anyone he sat erect and glanced around him. Nothing. It was far too suspicious for his liking. Pressing his nose to ice, more like a canine than a feline, he trotted along with his tail sweeping behind him; shedding fur as he went. Finally picking up a scent he looked ahead of him suspiciously and noticed dainty prints in the cold terrain. They clearly belonged to a female cat and as he compared them with his own large paws he snorted in amusement. He had far too much fur around his paws anyway, although it was good for situations like this when he was crossing cold ground. It wasn’t long before he spotted a feline shape up ahead of him just beyond where the ice faded into grass and soil. Tossing his tail into the air he prowled towards her and stopped a few tail lengths away; the first thing he noticed about her being her scent. ”Oh that’s a pity, I was hoping you weren’t a clan cat.” He growled, but not in such a way that he intended to intimidate anyone that just happened to be the way his meow sounded. Gruff and casual, quite like him. ”But don’t mind me on your territory.” He chuckled. The horrendous sour scent of clan cats was far too pungent here for his liking.

It had just begun to occur to her that perhaps she would be missed back in camp. Though it wasn't as though she were anyone's favorite cat and she was fully aware of this, she still understood anyone might be apt to panic at her absence. Especially after the scare with VertigoClan having a wolf ravage their territory and cats and all. It wasn't unreasonable of ZephyrClan to soak up leftover fear and perhaps even become a bit paranoid. Thus, Pepperbreath couldn't help but glance over her shoulder, toward the rolling knolls, carpeted with that lush ocean of rye and lupus, the blossoms tinted deep indigo in the deepest hour of night. No, ZephyrClan was deep asleep by now. Dawn was far off, and she could sneak into her nest with ease. There was naught to worry about. Her ears suddenly tilted back, once more toward the glacier. The skinny tortoiseshell whipped around, claws darting from their sheathes as her hackles involuntarily rose, giving her quite the ruffled appearance. Sure enough, there approached an enormous cat; moon-kissed a brilliant cyan hue, the ZephyrClan she-cat could only assume he was some sort of fluffy silver tabby. With full warning of his approach, Pepperbreath no longer felt threatened. By his size, he could kill her with a swipe, but she was confident in the fact that she would outrun him with ease before it ever came to that. "You're on no territory of mine. If you were I'd probably murder you here and now." She shrugged, a smirk appearing on her maw. "What can I say though? I look a lot smaller in the moonlight." Her enormous golden gaze narrowed sharply to slits as she sized up the cat who now stood before her. Sure enough, he was a soft silver hue slashed through with black and white - long fur, and a frightening build. The warrior tilted her head, "You here for the party or what, furball?" She didn't sense any real malicious intentions in him anyway.

As he approached the she-cat he began to get a better look at her. If he was a branch then she was a twig. Her shoulders were very lean set and she had a long and lithe shape that was finished with a sleek coat of fur which didn’t help matters but he silently envied her for having such a thin pelt. Undoubtedly she would be more comfortable than he was in this odd sort of temperature. Not cold but not roasting either, it was just mild. The lack of wind made each step he took feel heavy as though he was pushing his way through the blanket of moisture. Despite her ill-fed looking appearance she was not bad looking with a selection of colours splashed across her fur. As his eyes met hers he couldn’t stop himself from squinting slightly as they seemed to be outlined with black making her appear a little evil but there was a very strong doubt in his mind that she would ever be as evil as he was used to.
Slowly he studied the unsettled expression that she wore on her features and he chuckled a little. ”Don’t worry I don’t bite – much.” He teased with a quick wink of his left eye. ”Although I suppose I should be thanking you for not sinking your claws into my pelt, but I wouldn’t expect to hear anything from me.” He added with the tiniest hint of surprise in his tone. In all his time on this earth he had never encountered a clan cat that was welcoming when you crossed onto their territory which meant that this female was an exception to that rule. What did they call it? The warrior rules or something similar perhaps? He didn’t really care what it was called anyway. On the other hand it was possible that this was a trap for him and that her little warrior friends were waiting in the foliage for him. After scenting the air he discovered that the only pungent smell that was fresh was her own and that the others were simply slightly stale border markings – so he was safe for now. Being suspicious and plotting was a little nasty trait he always had but until attacked he would not go after another.
”Yes the moonlight can be flattering, but it doesn’t do much in my case.” He replied before lashing his tail which resulted in more of his hair falling out. ”And actually I was just here to check out who was around, I haven’t had the best company recently and by the looks of things you haven’t eaten much food recently.” He responded a little cheekily. His head titled to the side slightly and his eyes glittered irresponsibly.

Dryly, the female let off a soft chuckle, her face as humorless as the laughter sounded. She wasn't amused, but her odd ways seemed to justify the action nonetheless. Tilting her head just a bit to the side, the tortoiseshell twitched her long ivory whiskers knowingly while her bright gaze continued to rest on the newcomer. Still, she suspected her eyes looked like lanterns just as his did, as often happened to cats in the night. Still, she stared on, perhaps a bit intrigued in spite of herself. "Don't look so surprised honey! That's no man's land. Who would want it anyway? It's all snow. As far as I'm concerned, you can stay there forever. My land's on this side of the white-out. Stay over there and we can be friends until the end of time, okay?" She purred roughly, the sound was forced and came out as such, but counted as a purr just the same. "It's miserably cold on the snow and ice anyhow. As far as I'm concerned, I'm done with the shit until winter comes 'round again. So make yourself comfy, boy." Something of a real smile happened across her face just then, but surely her visage was too shadowed to tell anyway.
"And I'm not worried about your bite," She snorted, curling her dappled tailtip. "I don't care if you think I'm skinny. I told you the moon makes me look a lot smaller. Plus I mean, let's be honest. I'm far too quick for your bite anyhow. Your meaty jaws'd never catch me." Pepperbreath shrugged almost carelessly. Of course, they both knew she spoke the truth and as long as they were on the same page as far as sizing up one another, she hardly cared of his disposition. Sharply, she met his gaze, realizing at last that her claws were still bared, and sheathed them once more. "So?" She snapped, "I guess you're gonna make me ask that one cliche question right? Sir, state your business here please." The warrior ordered in a mockingly deep tone, her gaze almost playful, but her words still held the pride that all clan cats were noted for bearing. the fact remained. She was a warrior and he a rogue.

Deciding that she had no intention of murdering him he felt a little more at ease as he doubted she could murder him anyway. A fake gasp sounded from his maw as he glanced over his shoulder at the snow. ”That’s the best part actually, when you are as furry as me the snow and ice are no trouble, in fact I actually come here with the sole intention of snoozing on the ice.” He responded. It was true that he loved the cold weather because then he would be kept warm and snug by his thick pelt of several layers and he didn’t mind getting a little wet either. On the under hand during the warmer months his pelt only resulted in problems as it fell out left right and centre and despite this he was still always too warm. ”But the fact you want to be acquainted with me is amusing.” He added with a gruff chuckle.
With a shrug he flopped down onto an area of cool ground and tucked his paws underneath him; he was not quite yet ready to have his belly exposed to a stranger whose name he did not even know. ”That’s a shame, my bite happens to be quite scary, but at least my meaty jaws eat more than you.” He growled and snapped his fangs together while a small twinkle formed in his eyes. Taking a moment to glance past the she-cat at the territory he had been talking about he was not overly impressed with what he saw. All of that sloping moorland looked far too exposing for his liking and he couldn’t imagine what sort of prey you could catch there. Nothing that made his belly rumble at the thought of it that was for sure. Most prey happened to result in his belly rumbling. Ignoring her mocking tone he looked to the side brushing off her command. ”I don’t care what you’re doing but I am bothering all the cats that I find - something you can’t let go of when you are trained to do it.”
Sitting silently for a moment he then looked back at his company. ”But I would care for your name so I can keep a mental note that not all clan cats are complete idiots.” He added. ”Most of them have a habit of going nuts and spitting at me while their fur stands on end, it’s funny for me to watch.”

Pepperbreath snorted, shaking her head almost in disbelief. Who wanted to get acquainted? Surely not she, for she was not the cat who asked for names with twinkling eyes. "Oh yes, I forgot when I begged for your friendship. Right-o, sir." Tossing her head in a rather defiant manner, the female stood on all fours and shook out her short pelt. A few hairs fell to the soil below, but nothing compared to what almost seemed to be a trail of fur following the big silver tom. A personal victory, she thought, and inwardly smiled. Although she herself happened to be a loner some of the time, she couldn't imagine life as a rogue. He must be awful lonely; Pepperbreath knew she could never deal with a life like that. Though at times she questioned the clans' ways, she found herself loyal through and through, proved during encounters such as these.
Lashing her tail to and fro, the warrior cocked her head, enormous eyes slightly narrowed when she looked past the tom, out into the the vast white nothing to the inky horizon. "You're weird." She stated, matter-of-factly. "I mean, for a rogue..." Collecting her thoughts, Pepperbreath went on. "Like, I'm a clan cat. You're not, but here we are. Totally at peace, right? I mean, we're both on edge sort of, but at peace nonetheless. It just sort of makes me wonder why anyone ever fights. In ZephyrClan, I'm probably the hardest cat to get along with and I mean, you're a rogue. But we're getting along just fine!" Shaking her head, she couldn't help but emit a small chuckle. "Sorry, that's pretty rambly of me. This little encounter just makes me question all the battles I've ever been in, that's all."
Rolling her eyes, she added sharply, "And shut yer fatass trap! You live the greedy life, but there are countless cats I would starve for. I wouldn't expect you to understand." Pepperbreath sighed, feeling almost overwhelmed trying to explain the logic of clan living to someone such as the beast before her. Sitting down in the grass once more, she turned and gazed out into the moor before going on. "I mean obviously I go hungry in the winter, but in return I get to hear tales of old from the elders and see new life from the queens each spring. It's just the way the clan works." The tortoiseshell meowed, meeting the other cat's gaze once more. "Plus I was born skinny, just like you were born lookin' like a cottonball. Pick fun now, go ahead. Everyone I know's just jealous. Out here on the moor? I'm the fastest cat I know." She purred proudly, her pale gaze challenging. "And, if you must know, my name is Pepperbreath."

The silver tom rolled his eyes playfully. ”Yes, because you are obviously so much better than me that it would be a terrible thing for us to be acquainted with one another.” He replied, a little sarcastically. Honestly, he rarely had the opportunity to talk to another these days. Most loners were defensive and suspicious but he had not been born a loner. He had been brought up to work with others and respect those older than him and he did; they had just all left him. So at the present he wandered from place to place trying to find some means of amusement. Then again amusement was few and far between so he often found himself doing very little and he had grown used to that. Being alone was nothing that anyone should want to grow accustomed to.
Toxicwinter was content to sit with his own thoughts for a short moment but on the other hand he knew he should be making the most of the little company he did have. Spending too long alone with one’s thoughts could drive a cat crazy. He had seen it happen before. ”Ah, so you think I am weird because I am not attempting to claw your ears off.” He responded and sighed softly. ”It could be arranged.” He promised with something almost unrecognizable in his eyes; a somewhat murderous twinkle that came from deep within. Feeling a little more alert he sat up and gazed across at the she-cat with now calm green eyes. ”I can be your best friend or your worst enemy, you just happen to have something I want – company.” He added a tiny flicker of hope in his tone but he quickly pushed that away.
A little confused his ears twitched as he thought of a response. ”So let me get this straight you would starve for your clan but you are now questioning all of the battles you fought for them. You can’t honestly expect all cats to be trusting and to quite happily sit at peace; there are some who want to bring terror and others who want to be left alone. Surprisingly in my case I was raised to bring terror.” He added. Slightly confused by his sudden need to voice his opinions he studied his paws for a moment. He couldn’t help but notice they looked a little like an over-stuffed bear with ‘stuffing’ sticking out in all places.
”Lucky you little Pepperbreath, I wish I could say I was the strongest cat I knew.”

She smiled but there was a sadness in her eyes, and a bitterness too- perhaps that itself was her namesake. "Not exactly what I meant, but okay." She snorted ungracefully, her shoulders rolling into a slight shrug. Pepperbreath thought she saw a spark of loneliness in the tom's gaze as it bore into her, but if there was anything at all, it was gone in a flash. No, surely this was the life he had chosen to lead. But if so, why did he seek acquaintanceship now in a cat so irritating as herself?
Pepperbreath couldn't supply the tom an excuse herself, so just as she sought to ask him in the bluntest possible way, he interrupted with his own remark, to which Pepperbreath simply rolled her eyes, not bothering to indulge him with a reply. She could see clearly he had more to say, so, with measured patience, the warrior waited. Noticing for the first time the battle scars that laced his brawny frame, the she-cat squinted in the darkness, then stared toward the horizon where the sun would appear in just a few hours. Hopefully the dawn patrol wouldn't catch her with the rogue and jump to conclusions.
"So you are lonely, then." She finally concluded, twitching her tail, then turning slightly to meet his questing teal gaze. "But what doesn't make sense is why, praise StarClan, would you wander the world alone?" He went on, and the ZephyrClan cat went silent once more, her ears pricked to catch the deepest tones of this stranger's voice until he stopped speaking altogether. "Ugh, please. It's far too late and I'm far too tired to spend my precious hours deep in conversation with a stranger about my loyalties." She snapped, "But you confuse me just as I confuse you. You seek companionship, yet you're a rogue. You were raised to bring terror so you say, but here you are, considering the deepest thoughts in the night with a stranger, both of us raised to hate each other." The tortoiseshell grimaced. "I would starve and I would fight and I would do anything for my clan. Don't question for a second, sir. I'm not questioning my clan's battles, I'm questioning the world's need for violence if only because of this meeting here with you."
Pepperbreath raised a tiny paw to her maw and drew her tongue across it, dipping her head to thoroughly wash an ear. Shifting her weight to the other side, she went ahead and washed the other ear whilst pondering her company, waiting. "Oh?" She finally meowed, "Well that's just unfair. I'd like your name in return, thanks."

Toxicwinter managed to keep himself from laughing at the she-cats reaction. He liked the honesty of her answer. He also liked how care free she appeared to be as she answered him. She just didn’t really care and that’s what he liked most. Her ungraceful manner and her casual words just made her appear so relaxed. He had grown so used to living around uptight and violent cats that it made a pleasant change. Honestly though, he could find himself on the verge of battle for just looking at one of them in the wrong way. Being apart from them allowed him to be more relaxed and see that their way of life really hadn’t been for him.
He sighed slowly and tilted his head to the side. ”It wasn’t really my choice to be out on my own. My group slowly disappeared until no one was left and I haven’t really come across any other rogues who I can tolerate for very long.” He explained. It had all happened so quickly. One minute he was surrounded by power hungry cats wanting him to help ease their battle wounds and keep them healthy and the next he wasn’t. In a way he had been hanging onto the past by not moving out of their old territory but considering he knew very few others there was no place for him to go. At one point he had thought a lot of himself. He thought he was brave, tough and a murder and for some reason all of that made him proud but now he felt simple with few social connections. ”I don’t know.” He responded. He didn’t know why he was here or why he had been with Delirium. He didn’t have any answers and he was just floating somewhere in between it all.
Looking up and resting his gaze on her he took a moment to take in her appearance. She didn’t look any more loyal than the next cat did. He had never had much of a reason to be loyal he just had no place else to go. ”I think battles are what keep us from going insane, everyone has a little hunger for violence somewhere, some more than others.” He added darkly. His tail twitched from side to side gently before he put weight on his front paws and sat up straight. ”Toxicwinter.” He replied bluntly. It was odd how his name was similar to that of a clan cats but he wasn’t one of them. Maybe somewhere along the line his ancestors had been in a clan and the names had carried on.

She could just simply tell that he was sizing her up, still, even. It was, perhaps, a continuous process as she relentlessly flung different facets of herself at him. The bitter, the thoughtful, the thoughtless, the observance, the sarcasm. Oddly enough, he hadn't dealt much retaliation, and upon noticing this she couldn't help but allow herself a soft, sleepy purr of satisfaction. Her iridescently glowing gaze narrowed to dark ochre slits while she watched him watch her, but while her eyes showed her inner hostility, Pepperbreath was careful to retain a subtle smile upon her face for in all honesty she didn't particularly mind his company, and it would be a shame to scare him off.
Careful. A rather deep, sardonic voice rang in her ears. Of course, it was her own voice, reverberating through her mind and nothing more, but it did help to bring her back to the present. The tortoiseshell warrior blinked and looked at the situation she had suddenly put herself in. Sweet, Pepperbreath. She inwardly growled. Way to practically befriend a rogue, a male rogue. Anyone who spied her now would surely come to think she was having an affair! But her sleepy, slow conscious fought hard against her common sense. There's not a lick of harm in having a chat with some scruffy-ass loner. It said, and she fell to temptation, ignoring the other half of this internal debate.
"Sad story, champ." The dappled female meowed, drawing her tongue along her chops - an action which quickly morphed into a yawn. Carelessly, she flashed her brilliant ivories while her jaws opened wide and flicked her long whip-like tail. "Why don't you just, uh, casually insert yourself into a clan? Tempest or Vertigo'd love to have your brawny ass, I'm sure. Or just... I don't know, find yourself a quiet lady to drag around." Pepperbreath shrugged. "You're not ugly enough to be alone your whole life, I presume. And if you're lonely, change it." The pumpkin-splashed female snorted humorously, "C'mon bucko! Grab life by the horns." The warrior only continued to become more and more drowsy, and fought to fend off another obtrusive yawn, but failed. Once more, her jaws cracked wide and gaping, revealing her long pink tongue. "Take action where action is needed, yeah? I mean, that's what someone I used to know said to me once. I like it, it's a nice little saying."
Blinking her pale ochre eyes, Pepperbreath thought that perhaps she was beginning to see the milky glow kiss the distant horizon, and widened her gaze in horror. "StarClan above, what have you done? Nasty rabblerouser, I suspect you've probably put a spell over me! No wonder why I'm so damn sleepy, it's nearly dawn." Her deep tones painted out the word 'offended', but her expression showed nothing more than a pure, blank slate. Her conflicting emotions were locked away, tucked where none could seek them out. For, while she did wish she were in her nest sleeping now instead of conversing with shady strangers, the ZephyrClan warrior couldn't find it in herself to regret this midnight meeting.
Toxicwinter. "That's a happy one." She murmured, hardly speaking to him. Though she was barely conscious, the female still found sarcasm to be her primary language. "I.." Try as she might, the tortoiseshell couldn't bite back her next onslaught of words; "I need to go. I can't say I didn't enjoy meeting you, and while I definitely cannot assure you our paths will cross again, I have a feeling they just might." And I won't mind if they do, thank you sir. The femme cocked her head, ears pricked while she drank in his stocky, out-of-place appearance one last time.

A snort left his nose in a rush of hot air as she began suggesting things just like it was all that simple to do. ”Really lady that’s sweet and all but I don’t work too well in large groups of others and in fact I sometimes end up being even more unnoticed, although they do value my paws which are skilled in more than one art.” He responded clearly bemused by her suggestions to go and find a group to be with. ”And I have never been particularly good with relationships or getting females in that particular way....” He added trailing off as he got distracted by his confusion with the female breed. As she continued to speak he couldn’t stop himself from inwardly frowning to himself. He felt he was being realistic but another part of him was telling him that he was being pessimistic but he couldn’t seem to decide which one it was. He was torn between two sides of him and torn about what to do with his life. Why was everything so confusing?
”That is what I would also call a nice saying – overly nice.” He growled. She clearly had very little understanding for the live of a rogue just as he had practically no understanding of life in a clan or why cats chose to live in them. ”The only saying I was taught was basically kill or be killed yourself, so I am a little confused about what to do when it doesn’t come to killing cats because that I can tell you I am good at.” He added. He wasn’t exactly proud of his talent but it meant that he could survive which was something. Although this conversation was beginning to become meaningless as they were going around in circles and he had little conversational skill to change that.
As he studied her closely with a guarded expression he began to notice how she had changed her tune. Ah well, he had tried to be friendly to her but it clearly hadn’t been worth it. Maybe Shard was right in thinking that the world was a cruel place and that you had to become just as cruel to survive in it. For some reason now that he was on his own he felt he was beginning to understand that statement better rather than when he was around others who believed it so strongly. It didn’t make any sense. The world didn’t make any sense to him anymore. Others could change so quickly with little to no notification of it and every time it happened he seemed to be surprised by it or even caught off guard. By now though he was beginning to curse himself each time he went through that process as it shouldn’t come as a surprise to him anymore. It should be written in stone as a fact and he would do better if he could actually manage to remember it.
He simply nodded and stood to leave. ”I never turn my back on a stranger.” He explained as he stood watching her with glowing, toxic eyes. If only they were intoxicating rather than just dangerously toxic, maybe then he would have plenty of females following him. ”Goodbye Pepperbreath, you may meet me again.” He told her and waved his tail in greeting before waiting for her to disappear. Once all was clear he did the same and returned to his ice cool ground.
