Boneshard
It was easier when I told you 'no'.
The sun lent it's light to the world, reflecting it off the morning dew like stars descended to earth.
Or that's what she would have thought if Boneshard were in a poetic mood. As it was, she really just wanted to get some sleep, but someone decided to have nightmares and kick all night long. She sighed. It wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't feeling so under-the-weather to begin with, but it's another example of dealing with what you've been given.
Boneshard stretched to try and prevent another yawn but was unsuccessful and shook herself, trying to wake up.
I need something to do. she thought, looking around for a solution.
She saw a fairly deep puddle at the base of the tree and got an idea. She jumped down to it with well-honed climbing skills and looked at the water's surface. It was clear and clean, reflecting her image back at her with the backdrop of the tree canopy above. She imagined it was from a light rain sometime in the night and the morning dew running down the tree roots to collect in this dip. Then, very suddenly, Boneshard shoved her face into the chilly, clear water. It had the desired effect and very quickly her entire body was on full alert.
She pulled her face back out and laughed from the shock, the morning breeze chilling it even further as the fur on her face was plastered to her skin. I hope no one saw that.
She shook her head to try and dry it off a little bit.
With a deep breath, she looked around for witnesses, occasionally shivering in the light breeze.
Not my best idea. she thought in hindsight, but, seeing no one has borne witness and that she was, in fact, very much awake, she figured it would be alright. Hearing the birds beginning to sing their daybreak songs, she looked up to see the tiny bit of sun she had considered musing over earlier had come mostly over the horizon. Boneshard looked up to StarClan and thanked them for the convenient timing.
She leapt at the tree and clawed her way up the trunk, probably waking anyone in their hollows. She than hurried up to a higher branch and began grooming herself, as innocent as she was capable.
The sounds of the waking clan began to grow and she could already hear the Elders asking for Apprentices to change the bedding. Boneshard smiled. Maybe it will be an alright day after all.
Of course it was not to be. Even as the thought passed through her mind, a cold breeze came through the treetops. She would have thought nothing of it, but it was not like the rest of the morning breezes. Her damp face felt like ice and her very bones were chilled. Her eyes widened to see frost forming on her whiskers. She could see tiny ice crystals tracing the pattern of her breath as she exhaled. This was not a normal wind.
Just as suddenly, it passed. She hadn't realized she had stopped hearing until the birdsong and clan hum reached her ears. She hadn't realized she had stopped feeling anything but the cold until she felt her claws aching from digging them so deeply into the bark. And she hadn't realized she had stopped seeing color until a small brown and red bird seemed to emerge from a grey one as it flew past her.
What was that?
She shook, but not from cold this time, from fear. Was StarClan sending her a message? Maybe it was meant for Voidstar but she was standing in the way. It was a wind, that could happen, right?
She turned around, hoping to see the clan leader looking distant behind her, but there was no one.
No one but Siv.
And she wasn't looking cold.
Boneshard shook her head, melted frost flying. This was just great. She kinda liked Siv, her kits were cute if nothing else. Maybe it means nothing.
Boneshard decided. Nothing at all. Just a strange morning. Sleep deprivation. She rationalized. Nodding, she took a step toward Siv but stopped when she set paw in a patch of sunlight. Her paw was very cold all of a sudden. It's nothing.
But she elected to jump up a branch anyway. She steadied herself and was startled to see another cat already up there.
"Um, hello!"
