moritz. He had to admit, life in Trenton had become quite dull ever since Clear left. For one thing, he hadn't been let outside for a long time after her departure. The twolegs must have been afraid he would leave, too, and he wanted to tell them he hadn't, he wouldn't, he couldn't, and he'd already proved that by staying behind when she left. He was finally saved from the monotony of indoor life by the largest kittypet (Moritz figured the fact that he'd stopped using the litter box had a lot to do with it). Still, he couldn't leave his warm bed or endless supply of kibble. He couldn't do it, and now he cursed himself for always sticking with Clear until now. He had friends, yes but nothing was quite the same without her.
He supposed he'd have to get used to it. He had given her his blessing, after all. With an inaudible sigh, Moritz leaped atop the backyard fence and stretched his legs, pacing the boundary between what he knew and what he was too scared to learn. He wondered where Clear was. Thoughts of his sister near dominated his mind when he didn't have anyone around to talk to - he was just so worried about her, and he could never fully believe, no matter how often she told him it was true, that she was really ready to live on her own in the wilderness. The small black tom blinked his green eyes against the sun's glare as he stared out across the snow and into trees, trees and more trees. What was so good about trees, anyway? And he'd always preferred clean-cut twoleg grass to that mess of tangled roots and brambles the feral cats loved so much.
He shook his head. No, he'd never understand it, but he supposed it always had been in Clear's nature to be the adventurous one, and he loved it about her. But she was gone, and now Moritz could do nothing but wait, wait and wait some more for someone he might be able to talk to. [/blockquote]

Clear ~
She's got blue eyes deep like the sea That roll back when she's laughing at me She rises up like the tide The moment her lips meet mine
It was funny how things worked out. How one wrong turn and you could fall through, how one step too quickly could lead you astray. But this time her ebony colored paws tread their set path. Today, they followed a way they knew well, one she could almost walk backward, and would be inclined to do so if it weren't for her being so careful as to be quiet. Oh, certainly she moved a leisurely sort of way, her graceful black tail twitching here and there as it followed her. Her small body moving languidly. Halopaw had taught her a little about moving quietly, but even more so the birds and squirrels and mice that she met had taught her. As she stalked them, low to the ground, imitating a cat she had once seen, she learned how to keep quiet so that she wouldn't go hungry. And, well, frankly, it had its advantages. Like being able to creep up on your kittypet brother.
Of course she had no idea that Moritz was thinking of her at this very moment, atop the fence she had spent so many days and nights upon, longing for something she couldn't quite define. Her black ears twitched, clear blue gaze focused on the larger black tom. She weaved through the grasses in such a way, now crouched, now bringing herself lower, now drawing forward. Her tail flicked with the intensity of the silence surrounding her; but she stilled it, a soft, predatory growl rumbling low in the former kittypet's throat. Two blue gem-like eyes glared out from the shadows that the fence cast, and then the growl let loose and she lunged, all of her muscles tightening and loosening with the movement of her hind legs, propelling herself onto the fence.
She did not gracefully embrace him, but instead, with the force of her leap she slammed into him, knocking him off the fence and into the sunny grass in the yard of his twolegs, and once, her own. "Moritz! I have sooo much to tell you!" She purred, pulling her petite body out of the tangle of black fur. It had been a while since they'd last talked, but she knew he would be glad to see her, and of course, Clear held no grudges. She didn't mind that he hadn't come with her, though it did get lonely at times, when she wasn't running around meeting new cats. [/blockquote]

mortiz.
When he heard it, the low, rumbling growl of a cat who was definitely not from his side of the fence, he had time for one terrified thought to pass through his mind before impact: See, this is why I didn't go with her. For an instant, his body froze in horror, his untrained eyes darted around below him in an attempt to identify the assailant, but he found nothing, and suddenly there was a black shape hurtling towards him, and it was going to hit him, and he was falling, and --
Moritz hit the ground with a soft thud, and for the second time that day he thanked the twoleg grass for being so well-kept and clear of debris. He tried to yell, but he felt his attacker's weight on his muzzle and whatever sound he made was muffled. It was then that he realized he recognized the other cat's smell, clinging to her inky black fur and familiar to him in every way. He didn't believe it. It couldn't be. But still, as the she-cat untangled herself and rolled off of him, his heart began filling with happiness. "Clear!" he cried at the same time she said his name.
Beaming and purring, Moritz sat down across from his sister. "Man, am I glad you're here. You don't know how lonely it's been without you," he said. "So what's going on? How've you been?"[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Clear ~

It had been a light throw, as far as Clear was concerned, and she came away unscathed, giving her jet black fur a shake. Curling her thin tail about her white paws, she smiled, a clever, sly smile that held no bad humor. A naive little thing, the kittypet turned loner had never immersed herself in the way of sarcasm or of harsh language. She wasn't exactly dumb, really; she just didn't know what really went on in the world, outside the fences that protected her state of mind.
Her azure lights drifted to the ground over grass that was dull and lacking vibrancy due to the cold season. Still, where the dim sunlight could catch it it was a warm color, amber in some places and green in others. It didn't smell like home, though; no, even though she had spent most of her life here, rolling across the even lawn with her brother, acting as playmates, this was no longer her home, and she acknowledged that now. It didn't smell earthy and rich as the forest did; the mossy stump where she had made her home, which tasted of squirrels killed moons ago and cats that had passed near. It was not the small pool close by, where she drank in the morning, tasting of cool moonlit nights and of adventures she had found; it was a dry scent, for it hadn't rained in a while, and it wasn't particularly appealing to her. She rubbed a pink pawpad against it, then settled again and eyed her brother.
She hadn't really understood why Halopaw hadn't wanted to be her friend at first, but it was refreshing to be with such a fair tempered cat again, one that knew no anger, like herself. Still, it wasn't nearly as exciting as the unpredictable forest cats, and she yearned at the passing breeze, carrying the scent of the trees and of the warriors that lived deep in them. She had but a taste of what clan life was like, and she wanted more; she wanted to learn so much more about it. "It's been lonely without you too." Clear admitted, flicking an ear to the side. She hadn't realized until now, though, how much she missed her brother. "I met some forest cats! And I'm learning so much. Oh, Moritz... I wish I could show you all that I've seen." She hadn't directly answered his 'how've you been?' question, but her excitement was plain in her voice and she didn't need to display it further to make it known. Besides, nothing could get her down. [/blockquote]

moritz. So this was it, then. His sister looked happier than he'd seen her in months, or ever, really. He saw her blue eyes flicker over the yard they used to share; and although exactly what she was thinking was a mystery to Moritz, he thought he saw a bit of disappointment flicker through her face. This was no longer her home. He thought he'd accepted that, but it hit him now harder than ever.
Still, it was so nice to see her where she belonged. As she mentioned the forest cats, Mortiz understood that his sister would have found her way out of Trenton eventually. Her lithe form, her attention to detail, her sense of adventure - he knew she was a forest cat deep down, too. Even her scent was starting to pick up more and more feral qualities. It suited her, that lifestyle. He supposed being a kittypet must suit him.
"That's so great!" he meowed earnestly, getting excited himself for Clear, knowing how important the skills she needed to live in the wild would be to her. But something about the news bothered him. "But... aren't those cats really territorial? You should be careful, I heard they once ripped a kittypet to shreds, I mean," he shivered and he flicked his tail apprehensively, "I don't know which stories are true or not, but you'd better be on your guard if some of them are." Did he sound like a wimp in front of her? Maybe. It was nothing new.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Clear ~

Clear finished her inspection of the yard, and seemed thoroughly bored with it. It sparked some memories in her; being bested by her brother when she was small, then growing stronger and besting him. She had always been wild and fiery and curious, and Moritz had just been Moritz; intelligent, sensitive, realistic. She wondered if he would ever venture past the walls that had held the both of them in, see all of the wonder and adventure out there. She frowned at this. Still, Clear's displeasure that he might never experience the things she had would not stop her from telling him all about them. She didn't seem to notice the flash of realization that came to her brother, as he watched her.
Had she become a true wild cat, the former kittypet might have thought her brother lesser than her. But even though they were the same age, he had been somewhat of a big brother to her; it was more than just that he was larger than her. Clear had taken up a certain amount of space, had occupied a certain amount of traits; drawing light and energy into herself and attention beside it. Moritz seemed to take what was left of that; keeping her from getting hurt when she decided that all it took to fly like a sparrow was a good pair of legs. His paws seemed always to be firmly on the ground, while her's were floating mindlessly, drawing her up into the sky.
Clear smiled, her blue eyes lighting up. She was glad that he accepted her leaving, and even more that he was also happy for her. An image of Halopaw swept over her, with the she-cat's vivid indigo gaze and her beautiful pelt. Halopaw was different to her; and being so curious, the loner had wanted to befriend her from the beginning. She didn't like her being turned into a savage that might tear her to pieces. "Halopaw- the forest cat I met- would never attack me! She told me all about her clan, and how brave and strong they are, especially their leader, Voidstar." She grinned wistfully; the life of a clan-cat seemed so glorious, so full of pride and numerous adventures. Even if Moritz had sounded weak to her, it wasn't that he was, and she didn't think any less of him for it; Clear was simply naive, while Moritz worried for her safety as she danced about the fierce clan warriors. It wasn't the intelligent thing to do, certainly; but still, she was seeing more to things than her brother. Clear hesitated a moment, then mewed, "But... okay. I'll watch out, just in case." She didn't want him to worry about her too much.

"Halopaw, huh...?" Moritz murmured thoughtfully, picking at the grass with his claws. He'd never really thought about Clan cats all that much. It hadn't really occurred to him that they were so close by. It all came down to that fence, which now loomed over him and Clear like it always had before she left. That fence was the barrier of his world, or at least it was - on this side he had everything he ever had to care about, like friends and food and a bed and a sister and green grass to run about in, and he'd never worry about what was on the other side. Well, now things were different. Now he'd have to start caring about what was on the other side, because one of the things he cared about was over there.
He was silent for a long time, mulling things over in his head, his eyes drifting between Clear, the fence, and the vast expanse of blue sky above them. Finally, he spoke. "Hey, do you think..." he trailed off. He didn't know how to word this in a way that would be truthful, but would also not get his sister's hopes up. "Do you, uh, why don't you show me where you're staying now? I'm just curious," he added, smiling a little, although now that the prospect was out there his heart was beating like a caged bird's wings. If she said yes, there was no backing out. He'd be headed into the forest. I'm being ridiculous, he thought, it's not like I've never been there before. Indeed, he and his sister had been on many an adventure into the woods (it was alway Clear who had the ideas, always him who followed her along to make sure she didn't get lost), but this seemed different, somehow. Still, it couldn't hurt. He glanced at Clear, wondering what she would say to this.

Clear ~
She's got blue eyes deep like the sea That roll back when she's laughing at me She rises up like the tide The moment her lips meet mine
The slim black she-cat shifted her soft blue gaze down to his claws, the ebony extensions digging into pale green and amber grass that he must have thought perfect, but Clear thought was boring. It felt fake; provided for by Moritz's twolegs, the water that fell upon it not always from the sky, it's length not determined by nature. No rocks, no things to hide behind or play with or discover; no ant hills or mud. Clear winced as she recalled the first time she had come upon such a hill; feeling the stinging bites from the small red creatures upon her paws.
Clear didn't worry about her brother as much as he worried about her. She didn't worry about herself as much, either. But still, Moritz was safe here, behind those walls, on this perfectly manicured lawn, with their well off twolegs. There was nothing exciting here; and Clear understood that for excitement to exist, risk had to be about. It was fun to leap into the tumbling blue, like the water in her home that had come from a shiny silver spout. It was fun to watch the slithering green snake stalk its prey, unaware that such a creature could leap for her. She had never seen all of the amazing things she saw when she was free of the tiny patch of woodland area around their home. She wouldn't leave it for anything; and with this thought she felt a bit nervous, glancing toward the door as though a no-fur might race out and snatch her, pale legs carrying it faster than her black furred ones could take her.
Clear snapped to attention as her brother broke the thin silence and began to speak again. Her tail tip quivered with apprehension, and she broke out into a grin. "It's really great!" She mewed, jumping up onto the fence. "There's this log, and this pool nearby, and the water is even clearer than in our twoleg home..." Clear spent most of the way out into the forest chattering about how great her home was, though in retrospect it was only a moss covered log beneath an old tree with a small pool nearby. moritz.
Moritz kept low to the ground as he followed Clear across the slightly more wild grass on the other side of the fence towards the forest, looking much less confident than he ought to. With that in mind, he straightened up, arching his shoulders and pricking his ears as his sister raved about her newfound life. Clearer than twoleg water? But the twoleg water came from a shiny silver waterfall, how could that be any dirtier than something that pooled in dirt and mud? He was noticing more and more that he and his sister were very different beings.
He tried his best to hide the slight hesitation that held his paws back like invisible vines when they reached the edge of the forest. Moritz was careful to avoid his sister's gaze, in case she saw how reluctant he was, instead turning his green eyes on the grass below him which was getting more and more untamed with every pawstep. It wasn't just the forest that frightened him, it was what going into the forest with Clear - who was still very much the same cat he had shared a bed with and caught bugs with but at the same time a forest cat living a life as strange and unknown to him as the inner workings of his twoleg's magic silver waterfalls - would mean for him. He was accepting that she lived somewhere else now. That she was a loner and he was a kittypet.
Of course, she would always be his sister. He supposed that was why he smiled a little and found a bit more of a spring to his step. Be happy for her. He opened his mouth, revealing pointed white teeth, to taste the air. "Are we almost there?" he asked, not used to the barrage of scents that came at him from all sizes. He shook his head and took a minute to come back to his senses, giving the little white dollop on his chest a lick as he waited for more directions from Clear.
