Dead, dead, dead. Dustedrose? Dead. His darling babies? All dead. No, Northwind would not heal. His scars would not weave themselves together into a tiny mark in the flesh, a faint, long-forgotten blemish. That would simply not happen. His life was broken, his body flooded with grief and desparation. Northwind was lost in his own head, his paws never ceased to carry hm into unknown places, where he would fall asleep, and wake up dangerously confused. Maybe he was going insane, chasing the wind as if he could find his dead lover hiding in its satin folds. Somehow, he did believe that he was going crazy, but that tiny spark of willpower buried somewhere below his heart was beginning to glow once more. He wasn't being himself. Depression and hatred were not feelings that the tom could bear for long, and now, recovering, he was beginning to push them away. One small, no not small, one miniscule step for him. But a step nonetheless. Pursing his lips thoughtfully for a moment, he suddenly raised his head from its former positon of being slumped upon his forepaws as he lazily sprawled in his nest. No. This was not where he sould be, and that thought suddenly struck him; Reflectedpaw! With a grunt of effort, having been practically frozen over the past moon, Northwind scrabbled to stand up and though he swayed for a moment, the lean tabby stretched while ignoring the lightheaded feeling and shook out his coat. As if in finalitiy of his decision, he exploded into a single sneeze. With a quiet sigh, he glanced around himself and slipped outside into the brilliant afternoon. Cringing and blinking his forest green lights rapidly, as if to rid himself of the sun's piercing glare, Northwind sidestepped into the shade with a sigh, wondering what had become of his former self. A day like this was supposed to be appreciated, skipping about in, splashing through the tiny trickle of a stream that ran adjacent to clan with the sound of your own laughter ringing in your ears. None of that occured today, it was almost as if this ghost of Northwind was dragging the entire clan down, then again, that was an awfully selfish thought. With a half-hearted attempt, the muscular tom dragged his whiskers upward, at least trying to put on some partially healed look about himself. Still, he knew it wasn't working. No one was fooled. Twitching his ears lightly, Northwind darted quickly across camp into the apprentice's den. Poor kid. "Reflectedpaw?" He inquired softly into the den, squinting into the gloomy darkness. "We need to talk." Northwind meowed, lashing his tail once with an almost nervous air. What if Reflectedpaw hated him like his last apprentice did? What if he was different? What if he had been secretly training with someone else and no longer needed his actual mentor? With a good amount of difficulty, the warrior pressed away the thoughts and closed his eyes almost meditationally while waiting for his apprentice to emerge.

Whispers reached his ears, and he heard the horrid cry of a she-cat in pain. He jumped to his paws and headed towards the area in which the noise had came from. It was terrifying hearing such pain in her sharp yowls. Cowering outside the nursery, he caught the scent of his mentor, Northwind, and knew what had to be happening. Dustedrose's kits were coming, but there was something wrong about the whole thing. The stench of fear was thickly emitting from the strong tabby tom that was his role model in his life. Reflectedpaw was afraid, but he knew better than to go inside. The small tom shut his eyes tight as the cries subsided into loud sobs. Everything had changed...
Gasping as he awoke from the nightmare, the flashback really, that continually came back to him. It hurt him to see Northwind in such a condition, and Dustedrose's and their kits' death had hit him hard too. Sure, his training was behind, but he wasn't going to hold it against the tom that had lost it all. A subtle breeze drifted through the den, and he let out a yawn as he stretched in his nest. Strange, he thought that he had heard someone utter his name. It had sounded a tad bit like Northwind. No, it couldn't be him, or could it? Standing up and flashing his glowing eyes at the entrance to the den, the apprentice let a slight grin carry itself across his mouth as he noticed the large shadow that was present. Stepping out of the den, he looked up at his mentor and frowned. Northwind looked horrible, but Reflectedpaw could see that he was trying to heal. "Northwind? Are you alright?" 'Stupid question, you furball' might have been something the old Northy would have said, but the smaller tabby knew there would be no such reply. A grimace or a cringe. "I'm sorry, that was a stupid thing to ask. Can I do anything for you?"

Tranquility engulfed the warrior as he turned into a statue outside of the small den, tail flopped carefully over his neatly placed forepaws, back erect like his large ears, and liquid green eyes securely shut away from the world beneath closed eyelids. There was a pleasant presense beside him, purring quietly, wrapped in the scent of milk. It was Dustedrose, was she haunting him? Northwind's big eyes flew oepn at once, and, having become thoroughly paranoid, the tom's head twitched from side to side worriedly. And, suddenly realizing the wraith had left him be, Northwind allowed his spine to loosen and relax for a moment, letting a gust of hot breath tumble through his lips, nostrils flaring. It was no one, nothing. She was entirely gone. Get a grip, Northwind! That voice spat venomously, Northwind's conscience was obviously fed up with the warrior's wallowing. It was time to stop grieving. And suddenly thee was Reflectedpaw, staring up at his mentor as if he had suddenly shed all of his fur. Self-consciously, the big tabby blinked and averted his eyes from his apprentice's steady teal-flecked gaze and drew his foreteeth across his lower lip. Now what? Why was this so awkward? Speak, mousebrain! At least pretend you're not a tear-mop, will you? "Well," He coughed, blinked again, and cleared his throat thoroughly. "Well," He started over, "You know what happen, I'm assuming. Everyone does," Northwind's voice cracked slightly. Once more, he cleared his throat them moistened his lips. "I hope you're not expecting an apoligy, either. I've never managed not to screw up mentoring yet, I guess that's your problem. Complain to Lynxstar if you want a switch, but for now, the only this you can do to help me is to smack me around a little.. if you can." The tom managed to bear his teeth in a half-smile, crooked, but characteristically Northwind. "I need to get you back into training. Delirium is still out there, right?" He didn't waste a moment for an answer. "So come on, and no impudence, cheeky tom." With that, he stood and shook out his pelt, ruffling it slightly. With the gravel that was constantly scattered across camp clearing scraping unforgivingly across his tough pads as he slipped through a crowd of his clanmates, blatantly ignoring any glances directed toward him, the tom drew his tongue over his teeth and remembered to focus, on training of course.

The scent in the air wasn't all that normal, as there was an obvious stench of rain, but oh no it had not started yet. Reflectedpaw would have woken up quite damp if it ahd been raining. Stepping around his mentor so that he could come outside of the den, his eyes flicked to the sky where the clouds displayed dark, grey clouds. Indeed, it was to rain that day as he had predicted by scent. Lowering his gaze so that his eyes met his mentor's own, he smiled a thin smile. "We'll be okay, Northwind. I know it." These words are unlike what he would have normally said, but Northy was in no condition to take the usual sass. Though the slight teasing brought happiness to the younger cat, he knew it would be not right to hurt the Warrior further. "We don't have all day; it's going to rain. Or do you plan on working through the rain?" Using a bit of a nagging tone in his voice this time, the rusty brown tabby's eyes flashed with a bit of excitement as he thought of possible training activities. Tracking would be hard to do once it starts, and I could get in some practice for that too. But let's at least go get in some battle training done! " Excitement rimmed his words, as he tried to be positive for his mentor too. Time will heal, but training will help us both out. The apprentice thought. Flicking his tail at the camp entrance, his multi-colored eyes looked over to it too and he murmured, " Shall we?" word count: 267 comments: not my best, i know but it is my first in a few months.[/blockquote]

When he caught his young student subtly scenting the air, he, too, brought himself to deeply inhale. His mouth drew in the crisp sierra air, dew-kissed firs and jackpines were the most prominent odor caressing the air, but beneath that he picked up on what Reflectedpaw was saying, Rain. The sharp, clean smell was refreshing to him, and it didn't concern the leggy tabby-patched warrior in the least. On the contrary, he looked forward to the icy shards of water, clinging to his downy pelt and chilling his stiff bones, perhaps a last, desperate hope that something, anything, could shock him out of his mournful reverie. Yes, hope. He felt it, deep down, like the glittering quartz in a lightless cavern. It was hidden, but it was there, and, knowing he had his clanmates to help him, no matter how disapproving they were of most of his actions, they would. Northwind just knew they would, for it wasn't as though they could abandon him in his time of need, and perhaps his paranoia was unfounded after all, since it turned out his apprentice wasn't so mad. In fact, Reflectedpaw seemed, if anything, encouraging, not angry. Perhaps they all were too. And it was this thought that brought a dim spark into that cavern, and the facted colors glittered through. "Hmm? Oh, don't worry your head, little guy," The big tabby and white meowed drily, glancing toward the lake, where the tempest was forming, writhing in the sky which was bruised with the storm's purplish clouds. "A bit of rain won't hurt anything." In fact, it will help. It will help a whole lot. Northwind added to himself, almost smiling. He allowed his milky emerald gaze to meet the younger tom's teal one, and dipped his head, making no reply before trotting ahead, out into the dark evergreen forest. He rejoiced as, for once, he was not running- not fleeing from dark visions and fear that chased him and taunted him in ever breeze. For once, he was at ease with his apprentices, and at ease with his territory. The needles under his paws did not peirce and stab, but were flat and cushionlike as he trod upon them, and then did a genuine smile dance across his broad maw. "Well," He stopped short, remained beneath the cover of the pines, but the barren rocky landscape sprawled before the pair, and Northwind turned to his apprentice. "I say battle training, what say you?" He didn't wait for the young tabby to reply, though, because he threw himself at the other tom, careful to keep his claws shealthed and his mittened feet light on the ground. Slipping past Reflectedpaw easily, Northwind flung one forepaw over the other tom's head, catching his ears roughly, but not painfully. With that he dove to the other side of the tabby, taunting in silence as he bounded around Reflectedpaw, waiting for him to take the next move, when he spoke, "How about I tell you a story?" He asked, clearly still intending to battle with his long legs poised to strike.

Rain was a bit of a thing Reflectedpaw had never really enjoyed nor disliked. Some wet, damp fur heavy with water wasn't always a happy feeling, but his worn and dusty pelt could use some. He'd been in camp a little too often lately. Shaking his head, he looked with his radiant eyes to the large tabby tom that was his role model. The older tom's words encouraged the young apprentice and he let out a small chuckle of enthusiasm. Dancing around on the bed of pine needles with his quick and able paws, Reflectedpaw glanced up at the evergreen canopy towering above him. Various shards of sunlight burst through and dazzled him before the large, glowing sun was covered by clouds. Quickly, the tom became engrossed in his mentor once more. "Well," Then Northwind had paused, which caused a worried look to shroud Reflectedpaw's face. Before he could inquire why the larger tabby had done so, his deep voice rumbled through the forest again. "I say battle training, what say you? " Grinning, the apprentice burst out with high zeal about him with a short mew. " Yes!" Was his cry as his mentor began almost immediately. There wasn't time enough to blink let alone react before his mentor had, gently enough not to cause injury, bashed him atop the head. Laughter escaped the young tom and he felt as if he had before, when everything was all fine and dandy. Falling to an intense crouch, the apprentice lept forward at his mentor in a bit of a tackling move. When he felt another cat's fur under his paws, Reflectedpaw threw himself under the tom and began to kick at Northwind's underbelly with sheathed paws. In another fluid movement, the young tom had escaped from the lengths of tabby fur that had tickled his nose and was processing what his mentor had last said. " A story?" The tom asked in a curious tone. As his head tilted, he readied himself for Northy's next move and nodded with glee to the older tom's inquiry. ooc: that came out with swift ease. <3[/blockquote]

And then it came, in torrents, sheets of crystal water cascaded from the sky rather relentlessly, as the ominous mauve clouds had tumbled in on the pair's walk on into the territory, and Northwind had sensed the onslaught of rain long before the soft rumbles cracked and purred overhead, and he ceised the opportunity, deftly cantering away from his smaller apprentice's gently battering paws, spinning to cast several more well-aimed bats to the young tom's head and chest, then lightly skipped several paced back, relishing the icy chill that the rain set to his bones, scraping into each other as the warrior performed his tense dance of blows and taps around the novice tabby, catching his dazzling gem-like gaze every so often, and then he grinned- a sort of classic, dashing Northwind kind of grin which so considerably lightened the visage which the weather and the past few moon's events had darkened. "Yes, a story. I gotta teach you how to get mad, little punk. You're having way too much fun," He chuckled, "because what do you think would happen to you if I were a rogue, a very, very unfriendly rogue? Frankly, I don't think you'd be alive." As if to emphasize his words, Northwind darted forth and pressed a large white paw into the younger tom's throat, gently prodding Reflectedpaw's tawny velvet fur with suddenly unshealthed claws. He backed away again and rolled his broad, powerful shoulders until faint cracks could be heard from either joint. Guilt and grief sliced his heart rather painfully, and the tom visibly winced with the all-consuming pain before continuing, trying in vain to push away the brilliant amber eyes and dusty gray pelt that veiled his thoughts when he spoke, "I was almost your father, you know," He crowed, almost coldly, the tom's green gaze becoming frosty as he seemed to reminisce in many moons previous. "Instead of that useless git. I... I settled, instead of getting what I truly wanted. You know I loved Dustedrose," Northwind suddenly glared sharply at Reflectedpaw, as if the younger tabby was verbally doubting him, then went on, "but Radianteclipse was who I loved first, and most at the time," He darted in and once more clipped Reflectedpaw across the ear with a paw, twisting to face him from behind, considering simply bowling over his student, but thinking better of it, and now that he had began the sad lovestory that was the birth of Reflectedpaw, Northwind couldn't seem to stop. "I loved her, and Lilythorn, yeah your deputy, she loved me, and Dustedrose was so sad, and I thought loving her was the only way I could save her from herself, and Radianteclipse loved that piece of shit that spawned you far more than she ever loved me." He snarled, blinking away the rain that flooded his vision rather fiercely. "And then what did he do? He knocked her up and left her to fend for her own damned self! And I couldn't do anything, because I had to take care of Dustedrose and now I was depending on her as much as she on I, because I couldn't stand to see Radiant like she was. And all the while I couldn't help breaking the deputy's heart!" Northwind wasn't one for murder and bloodlust, but he realized that his love was too strong to ignore, and that if he ever found Emeraldfire, should he be alive yet, that he would try and kill the other tom. Northwind glanced down and realized that blood beaded at the base of several foreclaws amid the tangled mess of roots and rocks and soil that he had been subconsciously shredding in his subdued rage. He closed his eyes as the droplets of cool water slid down his sunked face, "I'm so sorry, Reflectedpaw." He finally managed to murmur, but he knew he had helped himself in the long run. He would no longer deny what he knew, and he would no longer lie to himself. The moodswings and moping were finished, and it was time to move on. His apology echoed in his forest green eyes, Northwind met the younger tom's gaze, itching for him to say something. He didn't want help, he wanted to feel and bleed and rage. It was as though all the emotions he had been harvesting since She died were spilling all over his paws, ejected from his very core. He honestly felt remorseful, that it hadn't been Lynxstar out in the forest with him, listening to his woes, but the very object of his feelings instead.

And it poured. There was no graduality to this rain - the heaven simply opened up and dispersed upon the two toms in their odd battle trance. It was not cold, nor was it hot. In fact, it was exactly the kind of soothing the smaller tom had needed at that moment. As it poured over his short-haired tabby pelt, his excitement faded into a dull euphoric ache that pulsed through him with his VertigoClan bloodstream. Was that really the old Northwind continuing to shine through? Perhaps this would be the day that his good ol' mentor finally kicked the depression that had shrouded him in its hellbent arms for what seemed like a century. "Sir, if you were a rogue, I would have ran for dear life up that small tree right there. With your size, the branches would have bowed under your weight." Reflectedpaw chirped in as his mentor's paw begin to trace around his neck. Gulping, the tom began to shuffle his feet from side to side. He would have in fact been dead if Northy had been a big bad rogue. Before he could even tell his heartbeat not to race, the large town had withdrawn within himself. "I was almost your father, you know." Those words brought back the cruel reality that Reflectedpaw had almost forgotten. His father was a rat, a deserter, and ran away after he came home to his mother and his siblings after that final battle with MaliceClan. His eyes glittered with remorse, and, at the reminder that this tom that had been present through most of his was truly not kin, he felt the need to run away. But, no, the words that continued from that tabby tom kept his attention in the paws of curiosity. Tilting his head once more out of habit, the small tom tried to place the few names to the cats they went with. Dustedrose, a name he'd rather forget, Lilythorn, the ginger deputy that really belonged nowhere, and Radianteclipse, his own mother. Then, a newer name that he hadn't heard since the day Lynxstar had made a speech to congratulate VertigoClan on its triumph against MaliceClan with the other three Clans. She had announced that Emeraldfire had left them, and for no apparent reason, really. He had barely been able to stand outside the nursery for that long. Heck, thinking back at it now, he could swear his mother carried him. Emeraldfire, his true father. Scowling, the little image of his father looked back to Northwind. Why had fate continued on Emeraldfire and Radianteclipse's relationship if only for this terrible mess to happen. Apparently, the mention of Reflectedpaw's father had a similar effect on Northwind, but to much worse of a degree. Rage rushed through the tom until Reflectedpaw found himself crumpled on the ground, with a few short sobs racking through him. "I'm so sorry, Reflectedpaw." The voice beside him rumbled. Shaking the tears off his face, the rain began to bother him a bit. "It's alright. He managed to choke out before forcing himself to straighten up and stop crying. "S'okay."

Just as it had come, bringing with it the soft flashes of lightning and angry rumblings overhead, the rain had slackened considerably, as if it had never come down in torrents just moments before, drenching everything without mercy. Though it still rained, the droplets fell from the deep silver clouds lightly, creating a quiet sizzle in the air, as the water bounced off of needles and stones, but the thunder continued complaining without pause, sending the branches of the trees quaking. Northwind glanced up at them, breaking his watery eye contact with the younger tom at once, and the tension broke. He realized that, when he had observed the dripping water to his content and gazed once more at his apprentice, that the lean little tabby was weeping. Gritting his teeth, the broad-shouldered tabby patched warrior shrugged and averted his gaze, as though Reflectedpaw's display was something private, indecent despite the fact that Northwind was very much a part of it. He hesitated, and then moved forward, drawing his milky pink tongue across the crumpled young cat's forward in a soothing gesture, as he himself now felt at peace since he had expelled so much emotion and bad-feeling from his heart. Unfortunately, he saw, this ocean of feeling was drowning his student, and Northwind wasn't entirely sure how he was to go about teaching him to swim through it. He stood back, "Reflectedpaw," The warrior shook his apprentice lightly, stooping to stare into the younger cat's vivid aquamarine gaze. "He's not dead yet, Reflectedpaw, but one day he will be. I hope this doesn't startle you, but he will be that way at my claws." He drew a deep breath, "I still love your mother. I could never deny that. I've not only neglected you, but her, and Lynxstar in these past few moons. I don't want your mother to be my mate, it's not like that." The tabby quickly ammended, "The way I love her is much deeper and much stronger than simple infatuation. I have always been friends with Radianteclipse, and from that I feel this." Northwind was pacing, absentmindedly, he had strode past Reflectedpaw and paused where the treeline opened up into a vast tumble of rocks, where the tempest danced before him, clearer than ever. "And so," he went on at last, "I'm obligated. I'm not a murderer, and I hope you know me better than that by now." Northwind turned around quickly, facing Reflectedpaw, "You know that, right?" His long, glimmering ivory claws were idly flexing, digging viciously into the dirt as a contradiction to his words.

The rain that had so violently soaken him to the bone nearly ended in the next few moments. A large burst of lighting flashed across the dark, cloudy sky and a boom of thunder shook the land and the trees above. Winds rushed through the leaves and all that Reflectedpaw heard at that moment in time was the loud roar of the elements as they combined fiercely. As his weeping subsided, the younger tom felt his mentor begin to shake him gently and utter words of comfort. "I do hope I get to see that battle, Northwind." The apprentice roughly growled to the more experienced tom. His few memories of the thing that had spawned him were now tarnished. Thinking back for a moment, Reflectedpaw realized that they had been all along. Abruptly taken aback for a few moment, the tom didn't realize exactly what his mentor was telling him. He...he loved his mother? An odd expression was perfectly captured on the apprentice's face as he stared numbly at Northwind. "I don't want your mother to be my mate, it's not like that. " Those words brought normalcy back to the auburn tabby's face, but he still felt a bit odd. Perhaps he felt odd because he had kind of liked the way his mentor had expressed those feelings so bluntly and without restriction. " Of course you're not a murderer. It's not wrong to feel anguish for those that have done wrong to you." The tom muttered, carefully watching the other tom grinding his claws into the now muddy ground. A few trickles of rain kept falling down onto himself and Northwind, but by now they were pointless. He was thoroughly soaked, all of him. " Hey Northy, promise me something." Reflectedpaw began, unsure of his next words and what the reaction he would get from the older tom. " Let me at least say something to my good ol' dad before he gets to run off again." He then carefully shook his body, expelling the fresh raindrops from his pelt, silently hoping to return to camp sooner now than later.[/blockquote]

He inclined his head, cringing each time a rain droplet dribbled into one of his large emerald eyes or into a nostril, though he didn't mind in the least when the water wetted his tightly sealed lips - in fact, he stole the opportunity to flick out his soft pink tongue and lap up the meager bit of moisture, some relief to his suddenly desert-dry mouth. The writhing clouds above moved quickly, almost hauntingly so as the tom was so used to the lazy clouds that meant only snowstorms or a shade-blotted sunny day, so it would be expected that he should be startled by the atmospheric bodies that raced across the faintly livid blue sky, giving off rigid streaks of lightning accompanying the thunder of the distance, though occasionally the cracks occurred just overhead, and Northwind flinched. He supposed that he was feeling a little jumpy now, as though Radianteclipse or Emeraldfire would leap out from the dancing shadows and tear away his limbs, as he would suddenly become limp and defenseless. The tom gasped, eyes flying wide to reveal his state of controlled panic, what was he doing having waking nightmares? He was supposed to be recovering, not torturing every emotion out of his being! The tabby-and-white warrior glanced sidelong at Reflectedpaw and dipped his head, saying nothing for long moments, and he allowed the silence to pass comfortably between them - at least he thought it was comfortable. He felt no obligation to chatter pointlessly. He had told the young tom what he needed to say, and what his apprentice had to hear some day. May as well have been now. Northwind gritted his teeth, and the unpleasant sensation threw a chill jetting through his muscular frame. "He won't ever run off again," I'll make sure of that, should he ever show his miserable, bright-eyed face around this hellhole. The thought echoed through his conscience, but he didn't say it aloud, realizing he had bathed his student in enough of his own bloodlust for one afternoon. Northwind flicked a raindrop off of his tufted eartip. "But sure. If he shows up, or if I find him, you can have the longest talk you'd ever want, buddy." He almost laughed, but the warrior feared that such a careless action would lead Reflectedpaw to believe he had gone insane. Of course, he had been headed that way for the longest time, but at the present, Northwind had never felt more sane having expelled all the pent-up bad feeling that had overwhelmed him ever since that fateful day when Radianteclipse was found pregnant, and then again when he'd witnessed Dustedrose lose not only her life, but the life of his very own children. The tom sighed, and met Reflectedpaw's gaze, the spitting image of the one he hated most, and cast his apprentice a simple smile. "I think we'll all be okay." He finally meowed, then dusted a droplet of rain off of the younger tom's shoulder, and added, "Also, I really am sorry. That was a pathetic excuse for a training session, but I think you're ready anyway. You know, I'll be really, really happy for you when you get your full name. I'll talk to Lynxstar about an assessment this evening." He motioned back to camp, and began to trot in said direction.

His mentor's promises brought the first malicious smile to the apprentice's young face. The spineless cat that had fathered him would never run free again. That is, if he was ever stupid enough to travel back to VertigoClan land. Something deep inside him told his conscience that if his sore excuse for a father had the guts to up and leave, he had the guts to come wandering back. Turning to Northwind, he perked up a bit at his lightheartedness. A smile spread across the apprentice's face. With his auburn tabby fur practically glued down to his skin with moisture, his emerald dusted cerulean eyes looked to the tabby tom with hope. "If you say so, Northy." Uttered the apprentice with little to no reluctance wavering in his halfway deep voice. His jaws then decided to spring open in a large yawn, causing his eyes to water just as they had earlier - but this time from a different source. As Northwind continued to speak, the apprentice felt more and more tired. Perhaps he could take a nap while the weather cleared up. All exhaustion faded in one quick moment as Reflectedpaw snapped back to reality. "Wh-what! Really?!" He cried, bounding after his mentor toward camp. There was a certain spring in his step as the younger tabby tom looked back to where his final training session had taken place, his eyes sparkling with more than just a bit of hope.
