Pushing his wet black nose through the foliage that covered the entrance to his den he took a moment to glance over his camp and keep a watchful eye on what his warriors were doing. Luckily for them nothing he saw displeased him and so he pushed his way fully out of his den exposing his thick black pelt. Sitting on his branch for a moment he decided that today he wanted to lead the hunting patrol. It would help him to see how the prey was running and how his warriors are doing. After all he had to make sure none of them were slacking and their skills met his high expectations. With five hungry mouths to feed and no mother to provide that food they would just have to make do with chewed fresh kill so plenty would need to be caught for them. ”Twilightbane, Hailghost, Flamestripe and Moonpaw.” He began calling out each of the names loud and clear so there would be no question as to who he meant. ”You will all be joining me on a hunting patrol presently.” He continued from his post on the branch by his den.
It had been a while since he had lead a patrol and he liked to do it every now and then just to give him a chance to feel like he was the deputy again. Being leader was great, of course it was, but sometimes he felt it distanced him from life in a clan and just wanted to work alongside his clan mates again. Although he doubted that they enjoyed it much since if you did something stupid around your leader it didn’t make you look very impressive. He found the distance that there usually was between a leader and their clan odd in way. On the other hand he liked it because he felt more respected and that way he could easily just talk to the select few that he felt he had a better relationship with.
Turning he padded quickly along the path in the tree that led from his den and went to stand in the middle of the clearing. Looking from side to side he pin pointed each of the cats he needed and sat down to wait patiently for each of them to join him. Admittedly he had just picked a random selection of cats off the top of his head and he didn’t really have a close personal relationship with any of them so this patrol could be rather interesting for them all. It would give him a chance to get to know clan mates that he didn’t know so well even though he wasn’t the most social cat around. It was true that he did like to keep to himself but as leader he had a duty and he had to stick to that duty no matter what.
Looking at the sky the black tom frowned. Dull clouds were approaching and he could scent that the air was damp. Rain would certainly bring the birds out their nests and keep them distracted, as well as mask their scents but hopefully it would only be a light shower at most because he didn’t fancy having his pelt plastered to his body. He never liked getting soaked, it made him feel like a drowned rat and he was certainly not one of those. Hopefully if his clan mates hurried up they would miss the shower but as things were currently looking they probably wouldn’t. He dipped his head to the elders who sat outside their den and then to Dreamfeather who was getting a border patrol ready.

Another loose cannon gone bipolar | Slipped down couldn't get much lower
The smell of the earth and the trees before it rained. He breathed deep, filling his lungs with the rich, damp smell. This was the best time to be alive. No cat liked being wet, really, but Hailghost didn't mind it all that much. Sure, he had always been a little odd. According to Russet, anyway. She'd seen something different in him than she had in Blazekit and Dreamkit. She had aspired him to become deputy of the clan that she had betrayed, to rise to power. Instead, his sister, Dreamfeather, had become the deputy, under Voidstar. Even now this haunted him, as did their dam, Russet. And it was such a pleasant day, wasn't it? Now I've gone and ruined it by thinking about those ridiculous nightmares. Still, it couldn't ruin it any farther by raining. The feel of his fur had never been appealing; he was a large tom, with a long, gray pelt, and rainwater only served to weigh him down. But if there was a nest to go back to, a place to dry off and clean his fur; he was game with that. It gave a sense of accomplishment, really. Plus, it meant he wouldn't be forced out on the moonhigh patrol, and he might possibly get some sleep. Yes, more sleep, but I'm sure it won't be easy dreaming, will it?
As he had thought, settled by the warriors den, about heading out to hunt by himself, Hailghost heard his name. It was called from the leader's branch, by the 'all mighty' Voidstar himself. He fully expected the worst, having not heard the other names called, and so was pleasantly surprised, if there was such a thing in his mind. A hunting patrol; that was all that there was to the leader summoning them. He had patrolled with the tom before, but not recently; still, he knew that the large black leader liked to think himself still the average experienced warrior at certain times. The well built gray tom wondered presently if his sister had chosen Voidstar to lead a patrol, 'suggesting' it to him, or if the leader had simply notified her that a hunting patrol this evening wouldn't be necessary. I could always ask her, but it seems like we haven't talked in a long time. Indeed, they hadn't really talked or been as close as they used to be since she had become mentor to Midnightkit and then, moons later, the clan deputy. Jealousy wasn't something he wanted to admit to himself, but his ambitions were kept in check. At least right then, anyway.
As he reached the leader, and settled nearby, Hailghost cast his gaze to the sky, taking in the same clouds that Voidstar had. "Voidstar." Was all that the gray tom meowed, by way of short greeting. The others, though he wasn't sure just who else was on the patrol, had yet to gather by the two older toms. He might have commented that it looked like rain, but that didn't seem necessary, being as the other tom had already glanced at the clouds anyway. Statements that were obvious weren't his to make. Still, it was his sister, Dreamfeather, that he liked to think of as the functional mute. He spoke conversationally at times, while their brother, Blazeleap, had been the talkative of the two... Whatever that's worth, now.

Moonpaw Innocent as a dove you will harm no one, but wise as a serpent no one will harm you. Moonpaw sat at the edge of the clearing, paws tucked under her long, soft fur and green eyes opened widely as they took in the hustle and bustle of clan life. The cool evening sun shone on her pelt and seemed to shimmer as she padded forward. Her tail was splayed out behind her like a stream and her ears swiveled as she listened to the goings-ons. She inhaled deeply the fresh scent of the forest air. She felt lonely, cut off, but it was peaceful. Just with the wind for company, ruffling her fur slightly. It felt quite strange for her not to be with another clan mate chatting away.
On hearing her name being called by Voidstar, Moonpaw sprung to her paws energetically. Her eyes danced and she shuffled on her paws excitedly. As quietly as she could, she padded over to Voidstar and Hailghost who were on the patrol too. They were much bigger than herself and she felt small and self-conscious. She glanced nervously at them in turn before her expression changed to excitement again. This was her first real hunting patrol and she couldn't hide her excitement. They would probably look down on her disdainfully, but it didn't matter. She was going on her first patrol and their thoughts meant nothing to her. But still she found herself trying to calm down as she sat uncomfortably across from them.
She wanted to make a good impression of course. She wasn't just a lively apprentice, was she? Blinking up at Voidstar she wasn't sure how he would react to her boisterous ways - or if he would. He certainly was one to joke about, she gathered that much. And Hailghost was prickly. It probably wouldn't be the most joyful patrol. Moonpaw regarded them silently, nodding to them but not sure if she should speak. Which wasn't in the least like her usual self, but these two seemed to have that effect anyway. She didn't want to act like a fool. And with their eyes on her she wouldn't. She stayed still with her ears perked and eyes bright. Curling her tail carefully around her paws she sat in waiting for Voidstar to lead them off. Moonpaw looked over her shoulder to see if her mentor would be joining them.

An orange tom had just awoken, blinking sleep from his still-heavy eyelids. He had not received much rest during the night, the den had been leaking with leftover raindrops from the previous rain. Nonetheless, clan life went on, regardless of whether he received an adequate amount of sleep or not. He pricked his ears, heaving himself to his paws. His tail twitched slightly as he shook out his pelt, removing the leftover scraps of moss that still clung to it. Digging his claws into the soil for only a moment, the tom began his descent out of the den; careful not to tread on any sleeping felines tail. Emerging from the den, he immediately spotted Voidstar, emerging from his den as well. Pelt flooding with embarrassment, the tom began to pad toward the fresh-kill pile, when Voidstar's voice stopped him. He pricked his ears, ready to listen to the noble leader.
What departed from the black toms maw, however, surprised Flamestrip. Voidstar had chosen him for a patrol? His paws shuffled nervously. The last time he had been with Voidstar, he and Dreamfeather were bringing home the leaders rogue brother, Shard. Shard, now Blackshard, had been tolerant of his jokes, while Dreamfeather and Voidstar had been not. When Flamestripe arrived in camp that day, however, he turned serious, and yet he couldn't quite shake the feeling he got when Voidstar raised his voice. The orange warrior hadn't even been disrespectful, but the leader had seemed to think so. Nonetheless, the tom had agreed to whatever the tom said, and carried on. But now, Voidstar was calling him for a patrol, and he had to respond appropriately. His stomach rumbled with hunger, but it would have to wait.
Padding over to the group who had assembled in the clearing, Flamestripe nodded in greeting. There sat Voidstar, Hailghost, and Moonpaw. He flicked his tail and looked up at the sky. It seemed like rain, wouldn't that mean the prey would hide? Flamestripe gave himself a shrug, not like it mattered. If Voidstar wanted to take them on a pointless hunt, so be it. It might be fun, after all, dashing through the mud.

First came a large grey tom with burning amber eyes and the kin of his favourite deputy Dreamfeather, Hailghost. As Hailghost joined him he nodded his head slightly in greeting but said nothing. Second came the mismatched coloured she-cat, Moonpaw. As she joined them she appeared to be quite reserved unlike your average apprentice which he seemed to find both surprising and unusual for her. Last to join them was Flamestripe. He knew as a leader he should have no bias but he couldn’t help but dislike Flamestripe a little due to the fact that the tom seemed to be chasing his deputy. He didn’t want any male distractions for his deputy because she had a duty to her clan and therefore no time for kits running around her legs and nursing. He would happily claw the ears from any tom who tried to court his deputy.
Much to his annoyance there was no sign of the silver hued warrior, Twilightbane. That would not go down well for her in future dealings with him and he took time to note it in the back of his head. ”Bumblewing!” He called after getting to his feet and whipping around to face the large ginger elder. ”If and when you see Twilightbane tell her that I am looking for her and she should be out on the hunting patrol.” He growled to the still brawny looking elder. ”Also feel free to make her change your bedding or fetch you anything you desire, if she complains send her to me.” He added with a malicious purr and winked a vibrant green eye at Bumblewing before waving his tail as a farewell to the elder and turning back to his one man short patrol.
His eyes narrowed as he looked to his clan mates who had gathered before him. ”Let that be a lesson to the rest of you, but as it stands you all seem to be keeping up to scratch with your duties.” He growled, not in a mean way he just had a habit of speaking in that tone. The fact that Twilightbane had not appeared had indeed altered his mood a little resulting in him potentially losing his temper more easily. However, the cats before him had not done anything to displease him so he would have to keep that in mind while taking them on patrol. Although, he did have some potentially good news for one of the warriors on the patrol with him so maybe that would help to lighten the mood.
”Shall we go?” He asked, although it was more of a command than a question even if he had made it sound like a question. Getting to his paws he flicked his squirrel-like tail to signal for the patrol to follow him. ”Flamestripe bring up the back of the patrol for me would you?” He called to the fiery coloured tom. He really didn’t want Moonpaw bringing up the back since she was still an apprentice and he wanted to talk the opportunity to have a little chat with Hailghost. ”Hailghost, walk with me would you?” He called summoning the tom towards him as he trotted confidently through his territory.

After himself came Moonpaw, seeming slightly intimidated and remaining silent as she joined the two older toms. Fine by him, he had nothing to say to the young female. Certainly he could have been friendly and reassured her with a few kind words or greetings, but did that sound like Hailghost? Obviously not, because he remained silent, merely casting his gaze upon the female for a moment before clamping his jaw and turning to gaze off into the forest. The friendliest of toms, he was not. The long furred tom watched passively as Flamestripe, a younger warrior, approached. Cold amber eyes didn't flicker from the spot where they burned, in the trees. If they had been any more focused they might have begun a wild fire; it was as if Hailghost was attempting to transport the patrol from camp to the borders, so that they might get the job done. Already he had noticed the absence of Twilightbane with a prickle to his fur, and it put him in a bad mood indeed, to be short a patrol member. His expression could only darken as Voidstar made a show of it; giving the young female work that even an apprentice would hate to do. Alright, Voidstar. He thought grimly, lifting himself to his paws and shaking dust from his long, thick gray pelt. We understand, but can we just get this patrol moving along? Normally he wouldn't have been so bitter about it, but today he was in a gray mood for one reason or another, and was working hard to keep himself cool and controlled. He bore no grudges against the leader, even if he had chosen his sister as deputy and not himself, and would never have snapped at him unless pushed. At least he can keep an eye on her. He reassured himself, at last moving to look at the black tom again. Not that she needed looking after. It was just, sometimes he still worried about her... That was what brothers were for, right?
As the tom seemed ready to lead the way, odd as it was to see the leader taking charge of a patrol, he followed serenely after. It was a comfortable arrangement, the youngest of the three warriors bringing up the back of the patrol, capable of keeping watch, with Flamestripe's apprentice between them, and himself just behind Voidstar. He had settled into the easy drum of his paws on the earth, listening again to the voices- sometimes his own, sometimes belonging to others- talking in his head. Sometimes Hailghost genuinely thought that those not belonging to himself were imagined; but other times, they seemed frighteningly real, ghosts speaking in his mind. He didn't have long to ponder today's voices, however, as his name was spoken just ahead of him, and his head snapped up, amber eyes flashing. The sable male had asked him to join the lead of the patrol. It was Voidstar asking; he couldn't say no, though he wasn't in a very conversational mood. He quickened his step to keep pace with the leader. "What is it, Voidstar?" He meowed in his general tone as he padded beside him. Would this be good news, or bad news? The other tom didn't seem to be in too bad of temperament, so Hailghost guessed that it must be news of a hopeful kind. What he couldn't guess at, however, was what positive thing he could possibly have to tell just the stormy furred tom. It must be about the gathering, or perhaps the new kits, or some certain task.

”Shall we go?”
There was of course no need to reply. She knew it wasn't a question, it was an order really. The long-furred apprentice followed Voidstar and Hailghost as they set off. She stayed a while behind them, just out of earshot and looked around with light green eyes. Her tail gently brushed the ground behind her as she padded along. her ears were alert to any sounds that met them and her nose picked up the mouth watering scent of prey that lurked. Her white tipped paws landed softly on the ground as she followed on.
Maybe something would happen on the patrol, who knew? Anything to change the silence. She didn't like silence, she didn't like having no one to talk to. Instead she gazed around herself, taking in the territory, trying to memorise her home, her new home. Home... it seemed unreal. She didn't even know her mother, nor her father. She had no sister, she was gone. Moonpaw had never felt so alone. But she wasn't one to feel depressed for long. A little smile tugged at her maw for no apparent reason and she picked up the pace. She wasn't too sure what lay in store. In fact, she wasn't too sure what to do with herself. She was sure to keep a short distance between herself and the two up front. Voidstar and Hailghost seemed to be having a conversation and Moonpaw stayed back.
Though she kept her senses tuned, her mind wandered off. She wondered what prey she would catch - or would she catch any? She had never really been on a proper patrol before. With her mentor she had gone, but never on a hunting patrol. Maybe she was a young, inexperienced apprentice, but that was what she was here for: to learn. Hopefully her mentor, Flamestripe, would help her learn. She wanted to do her very best - but what was her best? What would become of her in the end? She was eager to train to be a warrior anyhow, whatever was to happen. Her mind filled with thoughts that only a young apprentice would come up with.

He had heard Twilightbane's name been called, but the warrior obviously hadn't shown up. Hearing the irritation in his leaders voice, Flamestripe began to worry. Hopefully, that wouldn't ruin the patrol, he was actually looking forward to it. His apprentice, Moonpaw, had been chosen as well, and it was her first real patrol. Eager to see how his apprentice would perform, the orange tom swished his tail as he waited the patrols departure.
"Shall we go?" His leader, Voidstar, asked, although it was quite clear it was not a question. He jumped up, paws itching to race through the forest, although he knew that was clearly not the intention of this patrol. As they began, Voidstar gave him his directions; back the patrol. Nodding, surely to himself, he slowed his pace to fall back, and picked it back up once Moonpaw padded in front of him a mouse-length. He was at the back, but he still wanted to chat and test his apprentice, see how much of the training had been absorbed and how much would be put to good use. He flicked his ears absently, pricking them and being alert. He smelled a mouse here and there, but obviously, this was not the intended destination, so he ignored the mouth-watering scents and continued onward with the rest of the patrol. He couldn't help but feel a little jealous, for Voidstar appeared to be giving Hailghost a little special attention. Sighing to himself, he decided to distract himself by testing Moonpaw. Speeding up his pace the slightest bit, he glanced at his apprentice. "Okay, Moonpaw, can you scent anything as we walk?" |

hear us now, clear and true, wretches and kings we come for you The leader padded at the head of the patrol, leading the patrol deeper into the forest where all the good prey was to be found. Upon calling Hailghost joined him and he made a point of lowering his voice for their conversation. ”I was thinking of choosing you to be Aspenkit’s mentor.” He whispered to the warrior, making sure to talk loud enough so that he was able to hear but quietly so that none of the others could hear. It wasn’t as if giving Hailghost an apprentice was top secret business or anything but it was nice if it was a surprise for the rest of the clan on the day of the ceremony. That and he didn’t want to risk Moonpaw overhearing and telling Aspenkit about it before the day came because he knew how young cats could be. ”It’s just his ceremony will be soon and I wanted to bring it up with you before then, although I am sure it will not be a problem.” He added in the same quiet tone. After this he allowed the warrior time to think about it as the two padded side by side for the moment.
Behind them he could hear Flamestripe beginning to converse with his apprentice, Moonpaw. He would need to check on how her training was going at some point during the patrol. He was sure that apprentice and mentor had been through at least a few training sessions by now. He was also aware of the large number of younger cat’s they had who would soon be needing mentors which meant that most of his warriors would all be tied up with an apprentice, including him which was a rare thing indeed. Leaders were usually too busy to take on an apprentice but as it turned out basically every warrior who deserved an apprentice in the clan would have one, apart from Twilightbane and Blackshard. It was obvious why Blackshard wouldn’t be getting an apprentice any time soon and as for Twilightbane, well if she couldn’t turn up for a patrol then she probably couldn’t handle an apprentice for the moment. He already knew which kit he was going to mentor.
”Just over this way for a bit longer and then we will split up to hunt.” He called out to the back of the patrol in his normal dominant tone. He would have to get a moment with Flamestripe to discuss Moonpaw’s training with him. He was aware that she had been an apprentice for a while now and hopefully it wouldn’t be too long before she became a warrior. Tempestclan could be doing with a few more female warriors even if he did prefer males, the other warriors in the clan might think that they could start flirting with Flareheart, which would not do at all. Stopping under a massive oak tree he turned around and waited for the rest of the patrol to catch up to him before he would ask Flamestripe about Moonpaw hunting on her own for a short while just to see how she was getting on. On one hand he didn’t want to rush her training because he wanted her to be a good warrior and to be a good warrior she had to have all the skills, but on the other hand he was longing to have some warrior ceremonies and get the apprentices moving onwards.

"Okay, Moonpaw, can you scent anything as we walk?"
Moonpaw frowned as she concentrated and tried to decipher what the scents were. She opened her mouth to taste the scents as she walked. "I can scent mouse, vole and maybe squirrel," she said slowly. There were more, but they were stale so she passed no remarks. "And not much else, I think," she added. Moonpaw looked to her mentor, wondering what he would say. Flamestripe was her new mentor and she wasn't sure what to think of him yet. She walked along with a spring in her step, and her green eyes bright as they scanned the area for any movement. She had never really been out in the territory much; she hadn't been on a hunting patrol so far at least. This was her first, and because of that, she wanted to do her best - whatever her best was.
She knew that every apprentice had an assessment at some point to see how they're coming along training-wise, and she knew that she had to train hard to do well - and she wanted to. But really, she hoped that she would just do all right and that she would be a good warrior. Either way, probably, she would become a warrior, whether she was very good or not, she couldn't stay an apprentice forever. And why wouldn't she do well? What clan cat had ever failed desperately to become a warrior? She felt no immediate need to have her warrior ceremony and when she thought about it, it seemed so far away.

Aspenkit. Hailghost gathered his thoughts about him, considering the name and the face that must go with it. Him? Well, he's the male of the bunch. Doesn't mean he's the strongest, though. The gray tom didn't know that he wanted an apprentice, but it had been a while, and perhaps this one wouldn't be such a hassle. Aspenkit would be, after all, his second apprentice, though his last had come after Dreamfeather's, Midnightpaw, had become a warrior. It was alright, mentoring. There was a swell of pride in training a battle ready, vicious new Tempestclan warrior, and the tom, brought by Blackshard, surely had potential. Attempting to keep his voice as low as the leader's, matching in a deep, rumbling tone, the ruffled tom replied, "It would be good, to train again. It won't be a problem, Voidstar." His tone was neither friendly nor unfriendly, confirming what the black leader surely already knew; he would not refuse, even if the 'request' was not a direct order. If Dreamfeather knew about this, who was being chosen and all, she would claw his ears off, quite literally. Of course, how can she feel about his rogue blood? Hailghost himself had been bred and raised to have a hardy dislike for outsiders, as well as Vertigoclan warriors. He carried his own views on females, and the other enemy clans. He hadn't considered, of course, that Aspenkit was a rogue kit. He was in Tempestclan now, after all, and if he wouldn't behave within the clan, he wouldn't do well under Hailghost's mentorship. He could be a brutally harsh mentor, when it came down to it.
He hung back slightly more as Voidstar resumed speaking to the others, no longer needed for a private conversation. He was glad that he would be hunting alone; unless the leader had more to say, Flamestripe would be tied up with his apprentice. Hailghost could wander as far away as he liked, and return back after the others, bringing his catch. He wasn't as distant as his sister could be, but he wasn't a 'chatty' cat either. A nap out in the forest wasn't unusual; the camp was made around a huge tree; a walk or hunt by himself was equally as routine. If he could, he liked to be on the dawn patrol, for most cats chosen for such an early patrol were too tired to speak a lot. Also, there was a good chance of action, or better than a sunhigh patrol, because what intelligent cat would attack a clan of vicious warriors when the sun is bright? He knew Tempestclan wouldn't be that dumb, unless they had something certain in mind.
