Paddng out of her den and into the soft sunlight came a tuxedo she-cat. Her lithe legs bounded softly across the damp ground. The damp dirt spread a cooling sensation across her pads, tingling them as she walked. Once fully out of the den, the she-cat stretched, closing her eyes. She was still a tad sleepy, she hadn't been sleeping much lately. She knew she had to choose a deputy, and soon. Not only would her clan suffer, but StarClan would not wait forever. Chest heavy, Paintedstar padded over to the meeting hill. Leaping on top of it, she felt her pelt flatten. She had important duties to preform today, but she couldn't do them right.
Firekit was ready to become an apprentice now, he had been in the nursery for a little over six moons. Dunepaw was also ready for a new mentor, after news of Fleetfoot's disappearance spread. Paintedstar felt a flicker of remorse and regret for the apprentice. Fleetfoot had been an excellent warrior, and she knew he must have been an even better mentor. Death of Swishstar had delayed most of the ceremonies, and most of the clan had still been mourning. But now, the clan had had enough time for grieving, and it was time to move on. Clan life had to go one, and there was no better way than to appoint new apprentices. Chasing away her negative thoughts, Paintedstar prepared herself to stand in front of her clanmates for only the second time. Was she ready? Thoughts stirred in her mind. She was ZephyrClan leader now, so she had to get used to being in front of her clan. Cautiously, the tuxedo she-cat padded forward, to the highest part of the hill. Tail flicking slowly, she prepared herself. "May all cats old enough to catch their own prey join me here beneath the High Hill for a clan meeting."
She yowled, her voice strong as it rang out above ZephyrClan camp. Her eyes glittered as she watched her warriors assemble. Was this really how it felt like to be leader?

honeyfang tossed and turned in her sleep, her dreams haunted by the memories of her father. the blood, the teeth, the claws, every nasty little bit of it. a sudden thrash against the walls of the den made her startle herself awake. she flipped over as fast as she could and searched the den, greeted by darkness. relief washed over her as she realized that it was just a dream, that her father's death wasn't happening again. it was still pretty dark out, but a tiny bit of red was starting to appear. she smiled happily at that fact, pleased that it was becoming light out. if it hadn't, well, she wouldn't have been able to sleep again, so she'd be a grumpy tired puss all day. with a huff she picked herself up and padded out of the den, taking care not to interrupt any sleeping patterns. the last thing she needed after that nightmare was an angry cat on her tail. that, and she'd also go crazy in a rage. hey, it's not her fault she gets mad easily.
she peeked into the apprentices' den and was greeted with a smack on the nose. she hissed angrily before she saw the culprit; cedarpaw. she pulled the tiny tomcat closer to her and bit his nose. "that was a rude thing to do. especially to your aunt." she teased. after a few more moments with the tom she set off again, aching to do something, anything. so she did what she felt appropriate; she snuck out of the camp to go hunt. when she came back she had just barely missed the call of their leader. oh, joy. a ceremony. she placed the two rabbits onto the prey pile and went to sit over by her nephews, smirking knowingly at cedarpaw. she wondered when paintedstar was going to pick a deputy, hopefully today. she supposed starclan was probably upset with her by now. she couldn't understand why she hadn't chosen yet. honeyfang looked up at her leader, patiently awaiting her voice.
it's short, i'm getting a feel for the character, yadayada.

Dreamwhisper~Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk past you again?~ She placed a little tabby paw gingerly out onto the damp grass. Dew clung to her fur like crystals. She peered about her, seeing her clan through new eyes. She stood still, her eyes moving with a steady grace over all cats in sight, scrutinizing them.
"May all cats old enough to catch their own prey join me here beneath the High Hill for a clan meeting." She felt her eyes flicker to where the call came from. She saw the leader, PaintedStar. Dreamwhisper looked about her once again at the faces that gathered. Then to the bright sky. For a moment she just stared unseeingly into the blue, the came to her senses and realised she was here for a meeting, not to gaze at the sky.
She turned and fixed her turquise gaze on the leader. She waited for her to continue, but she seemed deep in her own thoughts. Still looking expectanly at PaintedStar, Dreamwhisper wrapped her tail around her paws elegantly and and sat up straight. She was still small, but it didn't mean she was soft. She frowned as she thought of the clan being without a deputy, and wondered about StarClan.
She lifted her pink nose to test the air. She realised how hungry she felt. Hare, and other scents she would find later. She held back her hunger and awaited the leader's speech.

× × × × × × × × × × × × × × ×
As cats surged around the high hill, Paintedstar felt her head begin to clear. Before, it had been foggy and clouded, the rush of addressing an entire clan messing with her brain. But as she watched ZephyrClan gather, she felt a little more logical. She ran a checklist of what had to be done through her head. Firekit needed to be made an apprentice, Dunepaw needed to be given a new mentor, and of course, the new deputy had to be chosen.
The second she began to think of the deputy, her stomach turned into a raging pit of black water, surging throughout her body. Who would she choose? There were many eligible warriors among the clan, and so many of them had the qualities right for deputyship. The tuxedo she-cat blinked slowly, trying to slow down her thoughts. There were several cats she could think of choosing. One was Honeyfang, the red she-cat with special stripes, who was sitting beneath the hill at that very moment. Honeyfang has many, many alluring traits, several of them key and ideally right for deputyship. But her head-strong personality and lack of socializing made her less of a top-pick. Still, the good outweighed the bad in the she-cat, and she would be valuable to have by the leaders side.
Gaze traveling down to the she-cat, Paintedstar began to think of another choice in her head, Havocflare. The gray-brown tom was loyal, thoughtful, and wouldn't beat around the bush. Paintedstar knew he would stand by her side through anything, he was a top contender. But there was one more tom that was quite eligible, Ripplesurf. He was the oldest cat in the clan, beside the elders, so he had the quality of wisdom on his side. He also had many other great qualities about him, but Paintedstar began to feel dizzy with the thought of having to pick. What if they left the clan or became disloyal because she did not choose them? The she-cat scuffled her paws on the grass, looking down.
A cough from the gathering crowd below brought her attention back to reality. She shouldn't be looking down, she was Paintedstar, leader of ZephyrClan. Lifting her head up tall and proud, the she-cat puffed up her chest. "Firekit, please step forward."
She said, her voice loud and confident.
Paintedstar shuffled her paws briefly, staring at the warriors. "This is a proud day for ZephyrClan, by naming apprentices we show that ZephyrClan will survive and remain strong. Firekit, from now on until you receive your warrior name you will be known as Firepaw."
|
She said, staring at the apprentice with shining eyes. "Ashstorm, please come forward." "Ashstorm, you are ready for an apprentice, you will be Firepaw's mentor. I know you will pass on your courage and wisdom to Firepaw, and teach him the skills that will make him a brave warrior of ZephyrClan." She finished, flicking her tail as she waited for the ceremony to finish. After the mentor and apprentice had touched noses, Paintedstar continued. "Dunepaw, Runningfox, please step forward." She said calmly, gazing down the two warriors. "Dunepaw, you are in need of a new mentor. Your new mentor will be Runningfox." She mewed, watching the two clanmates. Now that those ceremonies were out of the way, there was only one more thing to do, choose the deputy. × × × × × × × × × × × × × × × && You love me you love me not ~

It was odd, being in camp, instead of listlessly flying across the open moorland, searching for sources of food, entertainment, and thought. Solacestone didn't mind a rest now and again, but he'd chosen a great time for one. As Paintedstar's adamant voice roused the entire Clan from their current activities, the mottled tabby tom couldn't help but smile. She was a good leader, determined and strong, and the tom remembered how sickly she had been so many seasons ago as a kit. He also remembered how sad he had been to see Darkclaw, Paintedstar's father, pass on to StarClan far before his time. Solacestone had been a part of the patrol at the time, and he had done everything to help protect his clanmates. It hadn't been enough.
Blinking a few times to clear his thoughts, he watched the tuxedo she-cat gaze down at her Clan. From time to time, the tom wondered what it felt like to have to face every little problem that each cat that belonged to ZephyrClan dealt with. The leader even had to deal with the other Clans. Shuddering at the thought of such responsibilities, a small, contained grin flew across his tabby-dappled maw as he thought of how he could barely stand his warrior duties on his laziest of days. 'I wouldn't be able to handle anything more than a few bickering cats fighting over which techniques to teach their apprentices!' Solacestone thought as he rose up from the lying position he had previously been in. Clouds covered the sun for a few short moments, and instead of the golden light, there was a pale grey hue falling down upon every cat. Winds whipped at the ZephyrClan cats' pelts, but none of them even seemed to notice.
Slowly approaching the gathering cats nearby the High Hill, Solacestone eased himself near a few of his acquaintences, ready for the announcements that Paintedstar waited to produce to her Clan. When the kit was given his new, apprentice name, the mottled tom cheered on, "Firepaw!" and his cries died away as his clanmates did. Watching a few different emtions pass over his leader's pretty face, Solacestone looked down for a moment, silently saying a prayer of hope and blessing for his missing clanmate, Fleetfoot. His sister, Orioleflash, stood nearby, perfectly disguising her anguish with a scowl as Fleetfoot's former apprentice, Dunepaw, was assigned to Runningfox.
As Paintedstar seemed to be reaching the end of her ceremonies, excited chatter burst out between cats about the next topic; the deputy. Relaxing a bit as he knew far too well he wasn't even up for consideration, Solacestone's dark olive eyes scanned the crowd of toms and she-cats for the faces flickering with mock indifference. Surely there were several cats among himself and his clanmates that had desires to become more than just the typical warrior. Rocking his weight onto his back legs, Solacestone smiled a slight smile and watched silently as the events began to unfold before him. "Anytime now, Paintedstar.
" The tom quietly urged her to finish, knowing there were patrols to be organized by the cat chosen as deputy, and elders to be fed.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

How many cats had been lost as of late? More than he cared to think of; probably more than any one cat cared to. Names flitted through his mind with ease brought from long years in the clan. 'Swishstar, Ashenflight, Spectrelight... Fleetfoot.' So many in so little time, and it wasn't as though the losses could be blamed on sickness or battle. And the number of leaders they'd gone through! Just some six moons earlier had been the strange disappearance of Slatestar. A purr rumbled momentarily in his throat as he recalled the cream-furred she-cat he'd trained beside as an apprentice. She might have been the last cat someone wished to mess with, but he'd seen something good in those brilliant blue eyes. And now Swishstar; the russet tabby cut down so young and full of vigor. Truly, how did a clan go through two leaders so quickly? The tom grimaced before turning his gaze towards the piebald leader now seated proudly on the High Hill.
Havocflare shifted slightly on his paws, the ruffled looking tom leaning forward to better listen as Paintedstar began to speak. Necessary ceremonies had been put off for far too long by now; though he little liked to admit the fact, it was true and such knowledge couldn't be avoided. The clan needed more apprentices, and not to mention a deputy to keep the clan going. Rich summer weather meant prey was plentiful right now, but it wouldn't be like this forever. Briefly he thought of a few likely candidates, yellow-gold eyes seeking out the pelts of different clanmates.
The cheering of clan cats brought him back to reality, the tom blinking as he watched the newly made apprentice-mentor pair of Firepaw and Ashstorm step back into the crowd, murmered congratulations still buzzing. Havocflare's face grew sombre, grief flaring up inside him and his heart going out for the leggy, sable tom who flinched slightly as his name was called out.

Dunepaw All I can say, I that my life is pretty plain I love watching the puddles gather rain
'Hey, now I won't be alone in the apprentice den anymore.'
Dunepaw watched the newly named Firepaw with the slightest pang of jealousy as he watched the red-orange cat greet his mentor. With any luck, the younger tom would never have to face the loss of a mentor; a cat who became a close friend in the "strange" new world of becoming a warrior. No more being sheltered and coddled in the warmth of a den or the camp for most of the day; now one had to walk for what would at first be paw-numbing lengths of time. Train and hunt, knowing that somehow the clan relied on you for it's survival. A mentor was a new apprentice's support beam for the first moon. Later on a cat might dislike the orders they receive from the more experienced warrior, but there was still an inevitable relationship that formed between the two.
A pang of sorrow struck the lanky apprentice as he recalled Fleetfoot. The black-patched tom had taught him much in two short moons, and Dunepaw hadn't at first been able to accept the easy-going tom's loss. The apprentice had trekked as much of the territory as he could, but heavy winds and rain from spring weather had washed away all traces of the warrior and forced the tom back to camp, miserable both with grief and cold.
Dunepaw, Runningfox, please step forward.
The tom flinched slightly in surprise as he was wrenched back to the present, luckily it seemed few had noticed; those who did would hopefully forgive his tendency towards jumpiness. Shaking off the last few threads of melancholy, Dunepaw stepped forward - limped forward really, but there was nothing to be done about a ruined paw. Runningfox. The pale orange tom was so different from the relaxed, simple Fleetfoot with his outgoing enthusiasm. That was alright, the apprentice could accept that. The near-black feline was happy to step back into the crowd of cats, to just become one with the rest of the clan. Ears perked forward slightly, he caught snatches of conversation; everyone seemed to be discussing who they thought might be selected for deputy. Dunepaw didn't join in, he couldn't say he'd formed an opinion of who might be a good deputy, he had too little experience in that matter.

FIREPAW //Out of the fire, my paws will lead me.\\
Firekit no, Firepaw breathed deeply, enjoying his new name. He listened to the Clan cheer his name on. He promised himself he was going to be a great apprentice. He would protect the elders and care for the queens. He wasn't going to let anything get him down, too down that is. He was placed with Ashstorm as his mentor. That wasn't that bad. Ashstorm was wise and kind-hearted. Plus, Firepaw had heard he was great at mentoring. He just hoped he wasn't going to be embarrassed in Firepaw. He didn't want to let down the great tom. Firepaw glanced silently over to Dunepaw, the other apprentice. He had met him once or twice before and he was nice then. Dunepaw reminded Firepaw of a spider. He was tall and thin and a black cat. He had seen from before that Dunepaw can be a little antsy though. I hope I'm good company though. he thought to himself. He had been lost in thought about Dunepaw that he hadn't even thought to listen to Paintedstar. He saw her give Dunepaw a new mentor and out of respect, he dipped his head in silence to remember Fleetfoot, Dunepaw's original mentor. He didn't know him very well, but judging by Dunepaw's behavior, he must have been a very respectable friend. He hoped Ashstorm and himself would become mighty good friends in the long run.
Firepaw looked back up to Paintedstar and watched her paw back and forth nervously. She must not have any idea who she wants as a deputy! Firepaw let in a deep breath to try to relax his nerves. He trusted Paintedstar and loved her dearly as the leader. He felt fine to be around her and always wondered if he could be a leader one day like she herself. Maybe she can mentor me one day. He always wondered if he could be trained to be a deputy. He would love that. So very much, he would want to be deputy. He glanced at Paintedstar and then back at Ashstorm. Yes, I will train harder than any other apprentice ever had. I want this. I want to be deputy for my clan. He puffed out his chest and sat tall. I want to be leader.

As Paintedstar shuffled her paws, she waited for the clan to quiet down. Now that the ceremonies were done, there was only one thing left to do, choose the deputy. The leader flicked her tail for silence, shooting a glare at Solacestone. He definitely needed to learn the meaning of the word whisper. With a twitch of her whiskers, the clan leader began to address her clan once more. "Cats of ZephyrClan,"
She began slowly. "It has been several moons since the passing of Swishstar, and I believe it is time for a new deputy."
|
The tuxedo she-cat narrowed her eyes, searching the crowd. She could see her three candidates, and suddenly felt self-conscious. But what are deputies for? They're there to help the leader, and keep the clan safe and organized. Waiting once more for the cats to quiet, Paintedstar began her speech. "I know you all have been waiting for the announcement of the new deputy, and I apologize to you all." And StarClan... She thought. "StarClan promised me they would not be upset, there were special conditions regarding ZephyrClan, but they will not wait forever." As she spoke, her eyes glittered, gaze flickering from cat to cat in the clearing. Was she really making the right decision? The feeling of fur on her pelt reassured her. Maybe it was her own mind, but perhaps StarClan was watching the ceremony now, just as eager to hear her choice as well as her clan. Blinking slowly for a minute, she prepared herself. "Cats of ZephyrClan, I say these words before StarClan, that the spirits of our warrior ancestors so they may hear and approve of my choice." She mewed, her voice going up an octave at the end. Am I really doing the right thing? I have to be! What if StarClan does not approve of my choice? What if I have failed my clan because of my grief and sorrow? Is ZephyrClan doomed to perish because of me now? Words and questions buzzed in the leaders head, stopping her from announcing her decision. The tug of fur on her pelt reminded her once more that this had to be done, and StarClan would trust her judgement and instincts. After all, they must know her choice by now. StarClan knew everything. And if they hadn't approved of her choice, wouldn't they have sent her a sign? Shaking her head mentally, the she-cat blinked once and continued. "The new deputy of ZephyrClan will be Ripplesurf." × × × × × × × × × × × × × × × && You love me you love me not ~

{ R } IPPLESURF
His thick grey pelt was neat and sleek, stance relaxed as his broad shoulders hunched slightly forward. He had been talking to Sparktail, well, more like listening to him complain before Paintedstar had called together a clan meeting. "There ain't enough kits these days! That small one – what’s his name - Dan...Dunepaw is the only apprentice, one scrawny youngster to represent Zephyrclan's future! They don’t make cats like you and me anymore, I remember when you were an apprentice that den was so full us warriors had to expand it for ya!” Ripplesurf also remembered the elder (a warrior back then) complaining about how much work expanding it had been, but he didn’t voice the memory. Instead his pale silver tail-tip flicked in amusement, winter blue eyes looking up at the high hill as a pretty tuxedo took her place at the highest point. Realizing the grouchy elder was looking at him for a reply, the blue/grey warrior gave a slight nod. “Those were the days. Looks like Dunepaw might not be the only apprentice any longer though.” He gestured towards Paintedstar, saying his farewells to Sparktail and padding graciously to the edge of the gathered crowd.
Now he sat, long tail wrapped around his mammoth paws. Like he had suspected, Firekit was made Firepaw, Ashstorm looking happy enough with the new responsibility of being a mentor to the young tom. Dunepaw was called next, and to Ripplesurf’s surprise so was his own son. His first apprentice. He better not screw it up. He watched the two toms touch noses and take a seat. Skeptical, yes, but he had faith in his kin.
The senior warrior joined in with the name chanting, voice loud and strong. Now was the most unnerving part. The cats next to him stiffened a bit, Ripplesurf himself staying completely relaxed. A new deputy was in order, who it was going to be he couldn’t guess. There was a number of worthy warriors in Zephyrclan that could qualify. Ashstorm, Havocflare, even himself… The thought of being deputy sent tingling down his spine. The senior warrior gave a few licks to his fluffy white chest fur, smoothing it down as a distraction. Paintedstar knew what she was doing, he believed that entirely. She was a fine young she-cat and Starclan accepted her leadership with giving her nine lives. That said enough about her capability.
"Cats of ZephyrClan, I say these words before StarClan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my choice." A hushed silence swept over the camp, Ripplesurf's blue gaze not breaking away form the leader as she hesitated.
"The new deputy of ZephyrClan will be Ripplesurf."
For a second the lights went out, his stare blank. What she said wouldn't register. Things seemed to get very, very quiet. And then it hit him. "I'm deputy." The words fell from his mouth in a whisper, claws digging into the earth. He had always been energetic, but right now if he jumped, it felt like he might take off in flight. He wanted to yell it to the world, run from territory to territory and let everyone know he, Ripplesurf, has just been promoted. That one of the best moments in his life had just happened.
Buzzing inside he was still collected on the outside, head high and chest out, only his winter blue orbs gave away his calm. He stood, feeling like he should say something to the clan that now depended on him. "It's an honor..." His meow projected across the clearing, eyes sweeping across the familiar faces. "As your new deputy I promise to serve this clan to the best of my ability - or die trying in the act." His sweeping glace rested on the leader herself, the brawny tom dipping his head in respect before once again taking a seat.
He vaguely heard Ashstorm congratulate him, the newly appointed blue/grey deputy thanking him kindly.
{ R } UNNINGFOX
His first apprentice. Lucky him the dark tom had already started training - the pale orange tabby would of had no clue where to begin otherwise. Having an apprentice was a good thing...I guess... There went his spare time, his flirtatious hobbies, and anything else he enjoyed on his lackadaisical schedule. On the up side he could use the kid to his advantage if he played it right. Being the good, all wise mentor could get the ladies' attention just as quickly as flexing in the middle of camp.
Touching noses he didn't say much to Dunepaw, they could talk later. Rather he looked up at Paintedstar, enjoying the view. She began speaking again, the young tom not really realizing - or caring - it was important until she started saying the traditional words for picking a new deputy. He glanced at Stormtrick, warm yellow eyes finding the other senior warriors as well. A blue/grey coat stood out the most, thick tabby striped legs their only main resemblance. His father.
"Cats of ZephyrClan, I say these words before StarClan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my choice."Runningfox inhaled, holding his breath while the leader seemed to be thinking. Had she even thought about it? Her pause made it seem unlikely, or maybe he was just being rushy.
"The new deputy of ZephyrClan will be Ripplesurf."
His eyes instantly picked out his dad again, jaw dropping a bit. His father was the new deputy of Zephyrclan. T-T-This is believable!! This meant so much - good and bad. The she-cats would probably be easier to get, in fact he almost knew they would be. They might even come to him instead of the other way around. The flip side of that....well pick your poison.
He would be expected to act not only more responsible but respectful. Mature. Would the clan also expect him to lose his flirtatious habits? Go to hell. He thought silently, ear flicking irritably. He breathed slowly, in through his nose, out his already parted mouth. He was taking this too seriously. He needed to relax, losing his cool wasn't an option. Everything was fine.
The orange warrior was convincing himself of that as he listened to his father's short speech.

Paintedstar listened to the name of her choice of deputy ripple through the crowd. The two top other contenders, Honeyfang and Havocflare, looked disappointed. But who wouldn't be? Paws tingling, she flicked her tail for silence. "I believe Ripplesurf will serve us well."
She said, before scuffling her paw. Then, she raised her head and stared out at her clan; ZephyrClan. "This meeting is over."
|
She said, her voice ringing throughout camp. Flicking her tail as she leapt down from the rock, she couldn't help but hope StarClan approved of her choice. But surely they would have sent a sign if they didn't? Or perhaps they are waiting to. Sighing mentally, the she-cat trotted through the crowd and to her den. She trusted Ripplesurf as the deputy. And she knew that one day, he would make a great leader. A shiver was sent down her spine at the thought of her own death. But it was not going to be for a long time; she had only just gained her nine lives, and she still had all nine. She wouldn't not be a stupid leader, she would be cautious and careful. Paws tingling, she stumbled into her den and layed down on a soft bed of moss. Perhaps StarClan would contact her in her dreams.
