It was the morning after a troubled night. Like many nights before, she had rolled and kicked, clawed and hissed, fighting invisible enemies. For the deputy, it was hard to believe how miserable she had felt the day before. Her dreams had been terrible, yet today it was sunny and warm on her back, and she couldn't help but want to push the almost prophetic dream to the back of her mind. Why not? It was nothing that pertained to the clan, only words and memories playing off her fears. Fears for Tempestclan, fears for Voidstar, fears for herself and where her life could go from here. A brief daydream of an older, many lived she-cat, Dreamstar, materialized in her mind. Was that where her life could go? No place greater than that of a leader like Voidstar? She should be honored, of course. But lately, Dreamfeather had wished for something more... Could there be anything greater than becoming a leader? Serving her clan? It was many moons away, but it would come one day. She had chosen this path. When, to her surprise, the ebony tom spoke her name, she could have refused. No, I couldn't have. After her father died, after she watched her mother betray the clan, there was nothing she could do but accept. No where to go but higher, and the climb was making her breathless. A thousand miles to go and already she could barely stand alone. There were no easy paths; and there would be no shoulder that Dreamfeather could lean on. She was a deputy; her duty was to serve her clan, not to go on dreaming stupidly about things that could never be. It's funny how one day, all you want is something more, and the next, you just wish you could go back. She was too old to be childish, but too young to be this ancient.

It was a long time before dawn, a long time sitting alone in the dark with only her thoughts to comfort her. Chests rose and fell evenly in the warrior's den; all warriors were present but one. Longshadow. It wasn't as hard for her to see as it was for some cats, didn't take as much careful study. What it did take was a lot of denial. Dreamfeather didn't want to- no, couldn't- believe that she was falling in love with the lean black tom. Yet each and every time she closed her eyes all she could see was his clover green gaze, all she could hear was his soft, rolling tone. Always saying so little, leaving her grasping on his last word and wanting more. Love, when it wasn't acted on, was known to go away. But even though she had tried to distance herself from him since they had met that night, she couldn't quite get him out of her head. When she was in terror of herself, shaking inside, afraid and small; he chased all of the ghosts from her mind, when she herself was still trying to frighten him out. Frustration coursed through her veins; inadvertently, she was thinking of Longshadow now. He was nothing special; no other she-cat in the clan seemed to even wish to befriend him, nor did any tom. But when he looked at her, it was like everything was different. Like he saw something in her, something other than a cold, distant female. Something real. For a long time, Dreamfeather hadn't thought there was anything solid left. I ache to remember all the violent, sweet, perfect words that you said[/i] What was she doing, sitting around thinking about him? Patrols had already been sent out, and she had been excused- no, forced- to stay and rest from the midnight patrol, but that didn't mean she could just sit around and have thoughts she shouldn't even rightfully have. Dreamfeather had to do something, something productive. Shaking her short silver fur, the deputy gazed around camp slowly, taking in every cat thoughtfully. She wasn't used to being around at this time of day, early morning; normally she would be leading yet another patrol, duty taking her away from her noisy mind. The bengal's pristine blue eyes landed on the fresh kill pile, where other cats were lingering, finishing their meals and selecting from the small heap. Food. Right. Trying to look nonchalant, the slim female warrior padded quietly over, glanced at the cats close by, and then selected a blackbird. She returned to the shade of the great tree where the cats made their dens, settling to eat her bird. Dreamfeather wasn't entirely sure what came after this- hopefully the chance to hunt or patrol, and get away from herself. Still, right now she was occupied, and that was all that counted. If she took enough time eating her prey, slowly, carefully, then perhaps another cat would approach her, and they could hunt together. It could be something different... a social experience, even. Sometimes cats irked other cats. Sometimes there was hardly ever truth left in a subject. Insane right? Well not really, sometimes it can go so far as for other cats to judge loyalty and who will be the leader and all that other crap. It's too complicated for any cat's likings though. Although there will be battles, there can be battles within the Clans too. TempestClan can be very persuading too even and can control any movement of what's going on. TempestClan can be very judge-mental as it is though. Sometimes cats wonder if it really is their decision in things. A special, beautiful cat definitely had to make a decision herself. An orange and cream she-cat with amazing blue eyes had to decide her fate to TempestClan. Her parents made a mistake so what? What could she do, she was a kit, like her sister. Anyways, she was young and she didn't know that her parents were two different Clans. How would she know that as a kit? She always grinned and bared it though. She believed that the two loved each other to know what they were doing. She never questioned love. But as she grew older she seemed to have to continuously prove herself. You'd think after several moons, they'd understand where her loyalties lie. She loved TempestClan; it was her home. Thought sometimes, it felt lonely. She felt lonely.
Piling out of the warriors' den, she ignored all of the different cats she had encountered in her path to a warrior. It was annoying at times, being the odd one in the patch. The only cat she missed more than anything though, was her sister. Her sister was a beautiful cat like she, but she lived in their father's Clan, ZephyrClan. Her sister was named Paradisepool. She definitely was a paradise to be around, but Paradisepool hardly believed in love. It's been forever since she'd seen her sister. Most if not often did she wonder what was going on with Paradisepool and how had she changed. She ignored the thought. Stepping out into the sun, it reflected light off of her cream and orange pelt and she stretched her long body out. Islandsplash was ready to make an actual friend in TempestClan.
Islandsplash felt her stomach growl in complaint and she trotted over to the fresh-kill pile. She blinked her ocean eyes over to another cat who sat in silence, eating. The deputy, Dreamfeather, was alone and eating slowly. She hadn't been around Dreamfeather long enough to get to know the she-cat, but she had heard and knew from frequent advisors that Dreamfeather was rather sour and sometimes unreliable. Gatherings could be misleading though. Islandsplash picked up her prey and carefully began walking over to the deputy. Maybe there would be a change in Dreamfeather. Maybe Islandsplash would find a real friend after all. And maybe there will be a change for the orange she-cat.
"Erm, hi,"[/b] Islandsplash murmured before settling down to slowly bite into her prey, showing her long, pearly white teeth, she bit into the fleshy rodent and chewed slowly, wondering if the deputy would get up and leave her or if she would actually talk to her. If she were deputy, she'd talk to Islandsplash...wouldn't she? "I know we've never really talked before, but how are you?" She had no idea what to say to Dreamfeather. Usually Islandsplash was sweet and nice and loving, but when it came to meeting new cats, she could be a little...distant. "Even though we haven't actually talked before, I just thought it might be a good time to. You look kind of lonely out here and I- well I don't have very many friends because no one really trusts me. Which is stupid, I'm loyal and I don't need them to judge me and it hurts and I-"[/b] Shut up Islandsplash! She was rambling, "I'm sorry, I just don't know what to say exactly,"[/b] she bent her beautiful vibrant head down in shame and removed her eyes from Dreamfeather's. She was an idiot. Really. She was. Just rambling? Is that the best she could do to become friends with another she-cat? Ugh, why wasn't Paradisepool here?

Sooner rather than later, another cat approached. How unexpected was this? Either she had woken up backward, or a cat was willingly approaching her. It was rather different than what she had expected, however. Dreamfeather spent most of her time around toms, after all the majority of warriors at the time were male, so it was no wonder she was more comfortable around them. Born in a litter of five, she had three brothers- or, had had three brothers, until Blazepaw was killed. Nevertheless, she had just one sister, Goldenpetal, and her mother had been absent for most all of her life, so she had good reason not to trust females much. This cat coming toward her? She knew her, of course, like she knew every cat in her clan. They shared a den; they breathed the same air. Dreamfeather spoke to her each day when she sent out patrols, but not directly. She knew that she was half clan, and her name was Islandsplash. That was really all; she also recalled that she was mentor to an apprentice. Splashpaw, her young cousin, in fact. She figured Islandsplash just wanted something; most cats that came close to the ice cold deputy simply wanted something, not just to chat. But what if she doesn't? The information about Splashpaw was something that would make good fuel for a conversation. She could do this- be bright, and funny, and have a smile that actually reached her frost blue eyes. Dreamfeather was thinking that this might be harder than she thought though, when the other female crouched nearby, murmuring a greeting that was quite discreet and gave her little to go on. However, as Islandsplash raised her eyes to meet the deputy's, on the very blue side of aquamarine, she realized they had the same look to them. Lonely. They were both very lonely, and it was a beautiful greenleaf morning, despite the faint chill in the air. No cat should be lonely today.

Swallowing, Dreamfeather realized she had been silent after her greeting, and opened her jaws to return it when Islandsplash began speaking again. Twitching her ears patiently, she took another bite of her prey, savoring the taste, and then raised her head to look at the orange female. She managed what she hoped looked a sincere and warm smile, because she was told she often looked unapproachable, and though the smile came easily after her tangent, she was still unsure. It had taken her a bit of thought, but she realized it was actually better to be talking to a female than a tom. With most Tempestclan males, she couldn't show any amount of friendliness, lest it seem she was 'coming onto them.' Not only would this annoy Voidstar, who seemed, at times, determined to be sure she had no life within the clan, but it would annoy her when the tom started flirting. Whatever the reason, discomfort or what, she tried to avoid situations like those. Maybe, in the end, that was why she had become deputy. "Hi, Islandsplash." After what had been revealed to her, she couldn't help but charitably allow a small purr of amusement at her simple greeting. "First of all, I'm doing okay. I hate to see the season changing and growing colder though, don't you?" It was probably the longest sentence that wasn't a threat she had spoken in a while. It felt good to just sit here, a beam of sunlight bathing her sterling pelt, and converse with a fellow warrior. She wasn't sure what to say about other cats not trusting the other female, though. 'Sorry?' Apologizing wasn't really in Dreamfeather's style, and she could rarely bring herself to it. 'Sorry' was acknowledging that you did something wrong, and thus that you should do something to fix it. But usually when some cat did something truly wrong and just said 'Sorry' they weren't truly apologizing, just excusing themselves from explaining. There wasn't anything she could do to change the feelings of the other cats; she herself was hard to trust cats that weren't full Tempestclan, but this cat was a clan warrior, and for her, that made things different. Or maybe it didn't. Opening up to herself, Dreamfeather couldn't really tell; she was always so damn cautious with everyone. I ache to remember all the violent, sweet, perfect words that you said[/i] Slowly taking yet another bite, she chewed and thought on what she had said. The blackbird seemed to be taking a long time to finish, but it was alright because it gave her time to think before speaking, lessening the chances that she said something she didn't mean to and spooked Islandsplash. That happened a lot; she would put her foot in her mouth. That, or just be too cold and distant, not processing the need for a bit of warmth. So while she carefully ate her prey, she was considering. Should she ask something personal? Or should she just wait and see what the orange she-cat said about her earlier question? Perhaps she should say something else, so there wasn't a big gap of silence. Deciding that was the best plan, she scuffled her paws on the ground, tail tip twitching nervously. I really have to get out more. "Um, so, how's Splashpaw's training going? She can be quite a handful." The deputy faltered a bit, at that. "I mean, not that you can't handle her!" Islandsplash blinked her eyes. Dreamfeather was asking about Splashpaw's training? Well, to be honest, she hadn't really worked that hard with Splashpaw. She really should get on that though. Was she a bad mentor? Was she ready to be mentor? Questions freaked her out. She second guessed herself all the time! Wait, what did Dreamfeather ask before that? The weather? Well, she supposed it had gotten a little more chilly. Wait, what if cats get sick now that the weather had dropped? What if some...die? Islandsplash visibly shook her head. She needed to shut her mind up. It was causing her a lot of pain to have multiple trains of thoughts going on leaving questions unanswered.
"Well, about the weather, I do think it's getting a little chipper. As for Splashpaw, relax, it's alright. I know she's a handful. Yet, I sometimes feel like I'm not a good enough mentor. I've never mentored an apprentice before. I just don't want to let Splashpaw down, y'know?" Islandsplash asked the deputy. She curled her vibrant, orange tail over her paws and bit into her prey. For the first time, Islandsplash actually took the she-cat into consideration. Dreamfeather was beautiful of course, but she almost seemed...er....quiet? Not so harsh as she always was made out to be. Almost like Paradisepool.
Paradisepool was Islandsplash's sister. She lived in ZephyrClan, home of their father. Paradisepool and Islandsplash were half-clan. No one seemed to like either of the two because of the "mistakes" their parents made. Islandsplash loves her family and accepts their decisions. Paradisepool is much more of the leader. The leader that Islandsplash never was and never will be. But Dreamfeather, she was a leader and loyal and still maybe friendly, under everything. Dreamfeather reminded the orange cat so much of Paradisepool. Maybe that was why she was drawn to her. She wanted to be friends with her. She wanted her to be friends with Islandsplash. "As for Clan life, what's it like to be deputy? Even though you've been deputy for a while now, but what's it like?" Oh shoot. That awkward moment where the warrior looks like she doesn't trust the deputy....shoot. "Not that I don't think you aren't a great deputy, because you are."[/b] Now she was acting like Dreamfeather. Why was it so hard to start a conversation?

There seemed to be a long bout of silence on Islandsplash's end of the conversation, and it made her paws itch to flee. The forest was looking more welcoming each time she looked over to the camp entrance, and she wondered that she might just go on a patrol alone after all, early. The scene where the two females stood was becoming more awkward by the second, her skin prickling, in the quiet after her comment. Usually the other cats had nothing to do with her, she could be obsessive, because she tried so hard and worked at everything she did. No one really understood Dreamfeather. They thought she was icy, cool, steady. They thought she was rude, annoying, a bitch. Mostly, the others thought she knew where she was going, that she was bound to be leader and that was that. Like no other cat had ever had dreams before? What did the medicine cats think, unable to take up that tom's offer to hunt? She-cats, announcing pregnancies after being chosen for deputy. Life just was so simple, when you could stick to tradition. But the traditions that bound her kind, her blood, to Tempestclan also made everything so very difficult and complicated. The deputy also found, as time went on, that those bonds were weakening. She was seeing the world in a new, twisted way- a bright and cold way, like the leafbare sun. Dreamfeather didn't like it one bit. She wanted for the old moons, when everything was so much simpler and calmer. Even after the death of her father, at least things carried a steady rhythm. The deputy was a control freak- it was to be admitted. She wanted to be in charge of her life, to know what each day held in store. But it seemed like all she could tell now, was that the sun would rise and set- and everything in between, was unpredictable. Like now- where she was just sitting and staring at Islandsplash, her posture awkward, her blue eyes dull.

What Islandsplash said afterward made her ears prick up again. Relax? No cat had ever told her to relax before. Well, they had, but usually in commanding tones- this time, it seemed genuinely reassuring. Feeling a bit calmer after all, the pale silver she-cat looked back at Splashpaw's mentor, and took a deep breath. "I'm sure you won't. She just needs a lot of supervision. Her words were those one would expect from a deputy, but she also felt the need to add on a bit more, something more personal. "I felt the same way," Dreamfeather mewed hesitantly, "When I was first assigned Midnightpaw. But in the end, she became a great warrior. Since then, I've gotten more and more confidence with every new cat I mentor." She wasn't mentoring any cat right then, but was always involved in training the young cats. Dreamfeather wasn't against doing things deputies didn't normally do frequently. Blackshard's kits were growing steadily, and would soon add many more apprentices to the den. It made her a bit uneasy, mentoring the evil rogue's daughter, but she had spoken with Voidstar and knew she would be taking on Martenkit. Of the three daughters, Martenkit, Secretkit, and Brazenkit, she seemed promising. Dreamfeather knew that Voidstar himself was going to be Brazenkit's mentor; it was fitting that both leader and deputy would be mentors, for she was sure all three would be a pawful. Secretkit's mentor hadn't been decided yet, but there was still time to watch her develop and see which warrior was just right for her, so it was no matter. Perhaps she might even show interest in becoming a medicine cat apprentice. She thought this before recalling Secretkit's family of rogues, filthy killers, and wondered if such a thing, a rogue kit becoming a medicine cat, was possible. I ache to remember all the violent, sweet, perfect words that you said[/i] Clan life. Er, what? She was speaking again, and the deputy wasn't even listening, thinking too hard about mentors and apprentices. Surely there was enough time to consider that later, and pay attention now? She was being a mouse brain. What's it like to be deputy? That struck Dreamfeather a bit, not because she didn't think her warriors trusted her, but because she had never really been asked this before. She had been deputy for a full turn of the seasons, newleaf through leafbare, already, but no cat had asked what it was like. What she was thinking was that it was troubling, and that it kept her awake many a night, when the leader was probably asleep in his nest. That didn't sound right, however. She didn't want to complain. Instead, she meowed lamely, "It's... okay." Mentally, the bengal cursed. What the hell kind of answer was that? Quickly she picked up, "Sometimes it's difficult, I mean I don't know still what Voidstar and the warriors really think of me, I guess maybe I should-" Dreamfeather broke off abruptly. It was another moment of stupidity. Had the orange female just... called her a good deputy? Not just a tolerable one, or a so-so one, in fact, but a great deputy. On the outside looking in.[/b] Don't you wanna stay here a little while? Watching the bengal she-cat, Islandsplash purred slightly when the deputy mentioned the trick with Splashpaw. Plus, Dreamfeather actually told her about her first apprentice. Islandsplash was surprised. Some cats in the Clan had always said that Dreamfeather never really spoke to anyone nor did she talk about herself much. But, like any other cat, they always judge a leaf by it's color, not how many years of experience it has had. Islandsplash tried to take no notice of cats gossiping about her own clan's cats. When she and her sister, Paradisepool, were born, their parents had to flee from the Clans because they were from different Clans. Islandsplash's mother was from TempestClan whereas her father was from ZephyrClan. They divided the kits to their separate clans, but the leaders made an important decision to have the two of them know each other for life-to prove themselves to their rightful clan. Islandsplash's true home was TempestClan vs. Paradisepool who chose ZephyrClan. Yet the two sisters were adequately engaged amongst the half-clan cats, but all together, the sisters were best friends. Since Paradisepool lived in a separate world almost, Islandsplash missed having a friend that she could depend on. Dreamfeather was one of the only cats that actually talked to her in TempestClan. Perhaps one day they would be good friends. Don't you wanna hold each other tight?
Don't you wanna fall asleep with me tonight? As Dreamfeather began to ramble on, she finally asked if Islandsplash really thought so. Really thought that she was a great deputy was the origin of the question. And Islandsplash did believe she was a good, actually great deputy. She kept the Clan in shape and in check and never gave up on her duties as a deputy. She was a strong dependent leader and Voidstar was lucky to have her as a warrior and a deputy. "Of course, I wouldn't lie about that. I especially wouldn't lie to the deputy."[/b] Laid back, Islandsplash flicked her orange tail over Dreamfeather's shoulder casually. "You really are a great deputy, always checking the cats in TempestClan and showing Voidstar that you've got everything under control. I respect you completely."[/b] Islandsplash was so casual it was intoxicating. She didn't fret and she didn't whine much, she was just herself. A quaint she-cat with a heart of love. J'taime. [/font]

She felt a little shocked with herself. Had that been her? Dreamfeather, D-r-e-a-m-f-e-a-t-h-e-r? She had opened up a little, talked about herself and her past experiences. Dreamfeather wasn't sure what, but something about Islandsplash was slowly cracking her shell, urging her to come out and taste the fresh air she had been so longing to gasp. Like she had been trapped in a dark, airless crypt, now she was awakening, blue eyes stunned by the brightness of the world, but pupils continuing to expand to take it all in. Certainly she had spoken with Voidstar, but never intimately. That was duty, not friendship; trial and error, proving herself one step at a time. She doubted that she and the large black leader would ever truly become friends; for her to ever truly reach the status of a leader, she would have to earn her nine lives, and one of those nine would belong to Voidstar. Clan leaders did not retire in Tempestclan; warriors, in fact, rarely retired. The way of a true battle strong warrior, a Tempestclan warrior, was to die nobly in battle. So truly, never did the deputy think that she and the leader would become close; but perhaps, with a little time, Islandsplash and she just might... become friends? It wasn't unheard of. Back in the bright clear world, she had had friends. But then things had gone wrong and she had drawn back to the comforts of a tomb, still shivering in fear. It wouldn't be bad, now, to allow another to see inside of her. It might galvanize gossip about the camp; "I heard that the deputy spoke to Islandsplash. Do you think she's sick?" but she would know the truth herself, and perhaps if she and the half clan female stood together they could withstand many storms.
I miss the sound of your voice, The loudest thing in my head [/i] Realizing how stupid she had sounded babbling on when she scarcely said a word, the bengal withdrew timidly, and listened to Islandsplash speak. She was startled by her truthfulness and the casual tail flick, in all honesty. That was how little she had interacted with cats lately. Dreamfeather chewed on her words a while, thinking about what had been said, and resolved not to speak about herself any longer, as it was making her uncomfortable. "Thank you. You are an excellent warrior also, Islandsplash." She murmured, then shifted on her haunches and said, "Have you been out to hunt today?" She couldn't think of much else to say to change the course of the conversation, and her paws were itching to be moving and doing. To be chasing after squirrels, mice, birds... It was productive, but in the end it was just stalling time, doing things to pass along the days. What was she waiting for, to actually live past her duties? The only thing she had to look forward to was becoming leader; and becoming mentor to new apprentices. In the end, they were both duties. Some she-cats looked forward to kits, and mates, and families; but she was in no current position for such things. On the outside looking in.[/b] Don't you wanna stay here a little while? Purring at the deputy's compliment, Islandsplash buried her cheek into her shoulder fur, flattered by the surge of kindness. Something about the she-cat's aura pleased Islandsplash. Truly, Dreamfeather made her feel warm, fuzzy, and comfortable. Islandsplash was half-clan. She remained loyal to TempestClan, but she was also part ZephyrClan. She hadn't had a friend since her sister, Paradisepool, and she were separated for their own clans. Don't stare her wrong, Islandsplash loves her clan more than any other there is and definitely more than ZephyrClan, but she did miss her sister's voice and her scent, and her comfort. She hadn't felt the need to love someone in a long time, but being here with Dreamfeather-she felt finally like she belonged. It was odd, she had just started talking to the deputy, but they clicked so well. Her fur became hot under the thought of them talking and she became sensitive almost instantly.
