JAYBLUE ♕ "...And I don't want to catch you 'playing' with Bumblewing- or Frozensilk!- like that again!" Dreamfeather snarled gratingly, her irritation with him clear and upfront. As the deputy wrapped up her lecture, Jayblue's bored gaze acquired an icy glint. What else was there to do in this stupid camp? He certainly wasn't going to hunt and patrol every single second, like his cousin seemed so apt to do. The cold gray tabby gazed at her, waiting to see if her rant was over. I swear, sometimes she acts like she thinks she's my mother or something! Dreamfeather surprised him by jerking forward, into his face, so that her bared teeth were just inches from his own whiskers. "Or I'll shred your ears! Do you hear me, Jayblue?" Though slightly startled, having recoiled just a bit, he rolled his steely blue eyes. "Yes, Falconcry," he said through grit teeth, using the name of his long dead mother. That just seemed to set her on edge tenfold. "You'd better watch your tongue, or I might just cut it off..." hissed the deputy in a tone that was soft, and dark. The young warrior tensed, but his cousin took a few steps away, lifting her head so that, as the taller of the two, she stood above him. He was lanky and built much like her, but with considerably less height, and a definite lack of grace. "I want you on dawn patrol for the next two moons. Every morning." He flattened his ears at that. The prospect of being up that early, in the chilly, unpleasant dawn, was not one he relished. Jayblue was struck by how unfair that was; two moons worth of dawn patrols! Just for toying with a dusty, demented old elder! Instead of complaining, however, he just muttered, "Whatever you say, Dreamfeather." Apparently satisfied with his response, no matter how much malice she detected in it, the deputy nodded and turned to stalk away. He watched her retreating, spotted form until she melted into the forest shadows. Off on a solo hunt, no doubt. He would have done well for himself to follow her, but he didn't have the energy for hunting, suddenly. It was either find someone or something to entertain himself with, stir up some trouble perhaps- or lay around camp, brooding. As he was in no mood to seek out the latter, he flopped down in the dirt at the base of the great tree and sighed, feeling the thick root dig into his shoulder and side. "What a stupid punishment..."

a feral yawn broke from her open maw, loud and unnecessary, but no less genuine. it felt like she was always a little sleepy these days, between training with her relentless uncle and serving out the punishements she never failed to earn on the daily, young brazenpaw was busy indeed! "starclan above." she muttered without cause, simply overwhelmed by the fact that on this afternoon she had more than three chores to serve and had already went out on the dawn patrol! at least voidstar seemed too preoccupied on this day to have any training schedule ready for her- maybe she would even be able to catch a nap later.
doubtful. the scruffy bronze female growled softly and glanced toward the medicine cat's den where she ought to be, picking up mouse bile to pick the ticks off the disgusting old cats who couldn't be bothered the bathe themselves for the pure sake of torturing helpless apprentices such as herself. note to self: find a few frogs to leave in their nests next time. she mentally told herself, grimacing at the thought of getting caught. still, the reward was far too great to pass up such a scheme. just as she stood to head toward ashenflight's den, she caught a fuss being made near the center of camp, and couldn't help herself when she crept closer to listen, curling her tail about her tough little frame.
"what a stupid punishment..." her gray tabby clanmate muttered to himself, and brazenpaw snorted, standing 'tall' to step out in front of him. "rough stuff, huh?" she sneered, flicking her tail, "so whatcha do?" she asked, though her deep tones held little to no real curiosity-- she merely wanted to toy with him a little. rile him up. she knew jayblue well enough to know he'd cave to any potention arguement. "I guess I'll be seeing you a little too often for my liking over the next two moons. 'great' minds must think alike. voidstar just got me with the same punishment." the smaller cat rolled her eyes and sat down in order to lick a forepaw and drag it over one of her ears, as though now ignoring the tom now-- her facade was thin though, which was alright. she could use a bit of social interaction now and then.

JAYBLUE ♕ From his position among the roots, it was easy to see the somali coming, but that didn't make things any more pleasant. When she stepped out before him, radiant in the newleaf sunlight, he curled his lip. Attracted to trouble, just like any of the others. "Well, if the day wasn't ugly enough..." Jayblue muttered, rolling onto his side so that he could just glimpse her out of the corner of a narrow, ice blue eye. Another of the obnoxious rogue kits, whose names he had finally gotten into his head, after the deal with Martenpaw. Now he was nearly certain that this was Brazenpaw, and that left the remaining twerp as Secretpaw. Now that that lazy ass Aspenpaw was gone, it was just female apprentices, something that never failed to irk him when he came into contact with them. And it was impossible not to come into contact with them, the rats were everywhere, on his patrols, near his den, bumbling around camp, bothering the leader, stirring foxes out of their dens. Cherrypaw was probably the better of the group; the oldest, and his cousin's apprentice. At least Hailghost kept her training so often that Jayblue didn't think he'd ever even spoken to her directly. Then again, Martenpaw was Dreamfeather's apprentice, and Brazenpaw Voidstar's, so he couldn't imagine what the leader and deputy had been thinking, assigning such a pair of idiots to themselves. Of course he hadn't much clue what went on between them, but he had a faint idea...
Ignoring her question, he lay on his chest with his paws out before him, flexing his claws, and his tail tip twitching atop the roots, all together a pile of dangerous gray fur splayed about. Jayblue tightened his jaws when she sat down, muscles rigid, willing her to go away. What a nuisance. When she didn't, he worked up a low growl. "Whaddya want, scrap? I'm busy." It was fine and dandy for her to be assigned dawn patrols. She was a stupid apprentice; she already had to do all kinds of things, like look after the elders and show her belly to Voidstar. He was a warrior of eighteen moons, and his own kin was publicly humiliating him, making him look like some kind of troublesome kit. What was worse, he'd been given the same punishment as Brazenpaw? The filthy rogue's daughter? He didn't want to spend any time with her, let alone two moons worth of mornings, when his temper would surely be running high. Jayblue would rather fight a pack of badgers than have to listen to her jabbing him, looking for the reaction all of the delirium kits seemed to hunger for. There had to be some way he could skip out on the patrols. Lodge a thorn in his paw. Get cut up in a border scuffle. Develop a limp, or get a queen pregnant, or contract a deathly illness. Anything, anything at all.

her one mostly blind eye peered uselessly after the bigger cat, both forest green eyes narrowed in distaste as she looked down at him rather condescendingly, though she had no right to. when did that ever stop brazenpaw from doing anything? never. exactly. she huffed, her immaturity shining through her better-than-you act when she instinctively snapped a quick, "shut up!" at the tom when he first spoke, throwing the first insult much to her surprise. then again, who wouldn't jump on the chance to pick on a fellow clanmate in tempestclan? brazenpaw stood before him rather sullenly, lashing her long ruddy tail, its black tip like the head of an angry adder as she waited for him to give her something to work with-- at least a better excuse to tear off an ear, or maybe even both! she smirked and cocked her head.
"busy?" she mewed innocently, "busy sulking about your aunty treating you like a kit? wow, some schedule you got there champ." she laughed darkly, and took a moment to add suddenly, "hey! I'm no scrap! you big idiot, quit acting like you're so superior! jeez, you might be a warrior but to dreamfeather and voidstar you're no better than nasty little me, so there!" the little feline snarled, several patches of fur along her spine standing on end in her fit of sudden hostility, and afterward she continued to stare him down, one dud eye hardly threatening in the act.
but after a moment of silence, she managed to calm her ruffled fur, and sank down on her haunches again, realizing now she ought to be careful or she'd catch more than she bargained for. after all, martenpaw had only just been talking about this guy not long ago and had plenty of curses to spit out herself. brazenpaw was aware of her temper, at least, and was fully aware that she'd be so much more likely to explode at jayblue than either of her sisters, and not only would she lose, but she'd earn herself double the punishments she already had. still, fighting with him sounded too good to pass up! think of how foolish he'd feel after getting into a scuffle with a mere apprentice! brazenpaw let out a sudden bark of laughter and looked away from him, tipping her nose to the sky snootily.

JAYBLUE ♕ Jayblue didn't notice her haughty gaze, 'focused' as he was on the stirring of leaves at the edge of camp. Perhaps it was a snake, and it would come and snap his paw so he'd need to stay off patrols for a bit. I suppose that's too much to hope for. He could always hurt his paw in a fight, right here with Brazenpaw, but for one thing, he wasn't going to get caught tussling with a stupid apprentice, and for another, he couldn't afford to be in any more trouble. Jayblue could just imagine Voidstar saying that since he fought with the apprentices, he ought to go back to being one. Jaypaw. He couldn't stand to do that again. Splashmist would look so smug. Hmmm... Brazenpaw was more aggressive than her sister, despite their similarities in looks. Perhaps she'd be a bit more fun, something more violent to toy with. Already he could tell she had a hair-trigger temper, by her snapping tone. The gray tabby tom nearly grinned from ear to ear, listening to her continue, though at best her voice drifted in an out, a buzz in the background. Perhaps he could make it this way tomorrow at dawn, if she tried talking to him. Tune her out, soften her biting words. It might be possible.
"Busy sulking about your aunty treating you like a kit?" Subdued now, he didn't twitch a whisker. "Cousin, bee brain," interjected the warrior into her speech, in his normal rumble of irritation. Not that he cared, he could hardly keep her and her filth of a family straight either. Three sisters, he got that, and then there was Blackshard and Voidstar, brothers. The rest was unintelligible. He didn't care to muddle it out in his brain. He liked it better there when things were quiet. Somewhere in the land above his head, ears, eyes, nose, and senses in general, there were the words, "you big idiot." Now he did smile, very briefly, and to himself only, as though sharing a private joke with a friend. Catching at the tom's humor was often like having jokes made about you that you didn't comprehend; you only knew that the cats around you were laughing and smirking. "Yeah, I guess you're right," he agreed silkily, lifting his eyes to her once again. She appeared to be in thought, cooling off, after relaxing from her fit. Brazenpaw laughed and looked away from him, and he smirked. "Good joke, huh, twig fur? I like a good sense of humor in a cat." He was just doing his thing now, not even angry but with his own interests in mind. He rolled back to his side, and his stormy pelt was dusty as he pushed to his paws. Sitting back on his haunches now, he looked at her, her nose tilted up, and his eyes held a certain glitter. "You and me, we could help each other out."
Jayblue twisted his head to his shoulder, slowly licking the fur flat, thinking all the while. After a moment, he stopped, looked off for the entrance of camp, glanced to the side, and then rested his gaze on Brazenpaw. Leaning forward, closer to her, he smiled slowly. "Have you ever heard of The Malice Pool?" He said the over-dramatized name darkly, urging himself not to let a grin slip over his features. He knew there were lots of tricky things out by the shore, and as for the naming of said pool, he'd grown up hearing tales of 'Maliceclan.' There was no telling whether she had, but either way, it was just stupid enough for her to fall for it. Attempting to open his eyes wider in what was meant to be an innocent look, he awaited her response, eager.

the lean rust-colored female only rolled her eyes at his half-hearted remark- it wasn't worth the effort of getting in a fuss over. bee-brain? really? she almost snorted at him how unimpressed she was but then- looking upon him then with her shoddy gaze quite narrowed, she didn't figure he was trying to impress her much anyway, merely just trying to get her off his back. well, not this time bucko! "same thing." she muttered, with enthusiasm matching her acquaintance's. as she looked upon him, her brain whirred clumsily. it was not as if to say brazenpaw was unintelligent, no, but she struggled to make fair and unbiased observations, and she tended to be quite defensive in her own mind, therefore her perception of others was equally skewed, and when she met jayblue's stunning blue gaze- supposedly his namesake, she swallowed loudly, hesitating.
he was plotting, she thought, probably up to no good. of course that was simply his demeanor, and by now she could recognize that, but nevertheless she was a bit worried in his cunning, snake-like ways. yeah, she was trouble, but everyone knew it. she couldn't get away with being sneaky for her life. him however, it was him she was worried about. still, the apprentice was entranced by his condescending ways, like a moth to a light. with her sneaking suspicions about her clanmate in tow, brazenpaw was wrapped around his paw all the same.
"what?" she asked, a bit dumbfounded. of course he was toying with her! no one just switched allegiances like that, never. she knew it, but she was so curious. it was surely her downfall, shown as such when she added a coy, "oh yeah? go on.." her foliage-colored gaze shining though her conscious reeled, warning her against jayblue's 'friendly advances'. no, she wasn't dumb enough to think his intensions were innocent, but she couldn't help being strung along to his little plot, wondering what his plans were. she hoped to herself she was cunning enough to know when things got too deep for her, so she agreed to go along with whatever he had in mind. "alright, smart guy, take me away to your secret places!" she snapped, a bit sardonic in her barbed tones to let her clanmate know she wasn't buying his jest. she fluffed out her scrubby pelt and swished past him, both her head and her tail held high in what she hoped looked like the picture of dignity.

JAYBLUE ♕ With her single word, he felt the sensation of it. A predator crouched deep in the brush, with Brazenpaw as his prey, dancing closer and closer, hearing slight rustlings from his breath but remaining unfazed. Of course, prey was less intelligent than she, clearly as Brazenpaw was thinking herself a very crafty vixen indeed. Rather than simply falling into his trap, as a simple-minded vole might, she remained challenging, aggressive, superior. Plans flashed through his mind, all the while he seemed lazy, with his languid form, his tail twitching occasionally. Jayblue's entire body seemed to be still, but his mind was working at a furiously fast pace. Figuring things out, slowly. Of course, reading others had never been his strong suit. He was a cunning hunter, and a vicious fighter, exactly like a snake with his one-sight. The young warrior's talents only served to make him that much more unbearable. His intelligence had never been directed toward understanding others, as empathy was something he surely lacked. Other than that short coming, of course, he was simply mean spirited. You had to hand it to Jayblue, though. What he lacked in good will he made up for in looks.
"Oh yeah? Go on..." He had drawn so near that they were face to face, their noses almost touching, his exhaling warm puffs of breath. "Alright, smart guy, take me away to your secret places!" The tabby could've laughed. It was that easy? Just who did she think she was dealing with? "Oh, you're in way over your head, honeycomb..." Watching her prance ahead, he followed her more slowly with a wily glint to his eye. He had to admit, there was something... cute, about her. In a purely imbecilic, filthy way, of course. Still... He had her right where he wanted her, and he couldn't ignore that in favor of anything but pure trickery. So he forced his long, dull hued legs to take in more distance, increasing his stride until he was beside her again. Focus was key.
It was a surprisingly short time before they reached the muddy shore area, nearing the border. He glanced around, making a big show of it, since neither of them were really believing this anyway. Glancing over the water's surface, he turned back, having taken the lead, and gave Brazenpaw a quizzical, wondering look. "Now where is that Malice Pool?" He tried his best at working up the typical nice guy smile that appeared genuine and friendly. Before them, it was the lake edge, and on one side, a fallen tree, most of its trunk covered in moss. From what he could see to his right, however, it was a stretch of unbroken ground, leading to what he hoped was a sink hole near a short, steep hill. He sighted the apprentice out of the corner of his eye, then nodded, a look of 'amazement' on his features. "You know, I think... That might be it... Over in those shadows. By the trees," he added vaguely, gesturing before continuing in the lead. Jayblue made it about three steps before the 'stable ground' collapsed beneath him, revealing that it was actually part of the bog they had stumbled across. There was a wet, sucking sound, as mud collapsed around his hind legs, and the whole thing vanished beneath him, leaving him about a fox length in. He clawed at the earth around him, only as more of it beneath him seemed to open up, dragging him down with the thick, clinging substance. Jayblue gave a hiss of alarm as the hard area his hind paw had been braced against pushed farther down, and he no longer had any sort of purchase, beginning to kick downward, half frantic. He had entirely forgotten about Brazenpaw until his eyes met hers and agony split his skull as a submerged branch cut his side. "Help me, you... you idiot!" He struggled to find a hold, to pull himself up out of the rapidly growing soup. She wasn't going to come to his aid. Brazenpaw was going to let him suffocate in the muck, watching him sink slowly. Geez, what a jerk...{ WORD COUNT: 693 TAGGED: Brazenpaw } [/blockquote]

was he fooling her? it was certainly hard to tell. on one paw, brazenpaw was positive that no such thing as 'malice pool' had ever or would ever exist in tempestclan's territory, as convincing as it might have sounded coming from a different clanmate at a different time. but now, with him? that devilish look in his eyes? starclan above she would have to be a complete fool to let him get to her now, but then there was the fact that now she trailed along behind him, practically brushing against his lean gray frame as he pushed through the wet terrain confidently. and that, of course, had to count for something. while she surely wasn't quite gullible in the situation, she wasn't fighting his influence either, and remained oblivious to the dangers of allowing herself to fall into his trap.
"yeah, where ever could it be?" she sneered, her featured smudged into a distrusting smirk when the lakeshore finally appeared, stretching out before them almost majestically. while he feigned looking around to find his little 'pool' which brazenpaw still remained quite confused about, she languidly batted after his long tabby tail, claws outstretched, but her efforts were halfhearted- no harm done. she doubted the tom had even noticed. finally! he found his little thing, or whatever. she squinted in the direction he indicated, and bobbed her head. "sure sure, why don't you tag along? we can investigate together, it sounds pretty dangerous you know." so sly! yeah she knew her way around his weird game, though she wasn't sure of all the rules, by now she was certain that he was playing some trick on her.
"c'mon- agh!" she yelped, flinching back a step when jayblue made as if to head forth, but instead was swallowed up by the earth. shocked, it took the rust-hued female several moments before she jumped into action, well aware of her clanmate's struggling and noises of distress. looking around, she sought a thick branch to help heave him out with, but saw nothing immediately so instead, she took a deep breath and looked down at him, "would you quit struggling? and don't call me an idiot! I'm not the one who goes bumbling into mud puddles!" she snarled harshly while lowering herself to the ground and creeping forward, slowly, one paw at a time while she prayed to starclan the fool before her would stop wiggling in the muck, as it seemed to only pull him down faster. hoping to use her lighter weight to their advantage, she fearlessly made her way onto the unstable grasses, a thin layer atop the dangerous softer terrain beneath.
in one motion, she lunged lightly forth and sunk her teeth into his scruff, ignoring any pain she may have been causing him, and anchored herself with her hind paws in order to tug on the bigger tom. at first, she felt nothing, but slowly the mud clinging to jayblue's fur seemed to begin to give way, and she managed to back carefully one step away from the whole, pulling on his scruff much more firmly now, until much of his frame became loosened, and she was able to roughly inch him back onto the more solid patches of grass. when she spat him out, a tumble of curses also seemed to explode from her small frame, followed quickly by heavy breathing. "starclan above, you weigh as much as a damned mountain." she wheezed, flopping herself down dramatically onto the ground. "can we cut the malice pool dirt now?" she asked as an afterthought, hoping he hadn't meant for her to die in one of those mud puddles instead.

JAYBLUE ♕ He hadn't realized that in the time he'd been flailing around, cussing himself out, cursing the muck itself and damning Starclan, Brazenpaw had actually been doing something. And she wasn't just standing there, watching. The thin, tawny apprentice was actually coming toward him, inching her way, and it struck him that she was actually trying to help him. Jayblue was so startled he stopped, suspended in the earth, and stared at her, as though she were crazy. "Are you suicidal!? We'll both get stuck in here, and-!" Just then she sank her fangs into his neck fur, causing his tense muscles to jerk in surprise, an involuntary spasm. He bit back a yowl, more from shock than pain, and pressed his jaws closed, though a growl rumbled in his throat all the while. It seemed like he was going to be stuck there forever when slowly he felt something give, more land opening up beneath him, but he was being tugged upward. As the process neared an end, and his gray paws beat at solid, grassy area, an unbending part of the swamp, he pushed himself fully out. Crawling quite a number of fox lengths from the hole- and Brazenpaw, who was now cursing- he dropped to his belly, his breath a rasp in his throat. Turning away from the apprentice, he coughed up muddy water, breathed into his lungs from the ordeal. When the heaving was over, he sat there gasping for a minute, collecting himself, and then stood. Jayblue spat out the after taste of the dirt in disgust.
Brazenpaw fucking saved him. Brazenpaw. It hit him, and he was unable to keep from glaring at the trees contemptuously, though his back was still turned to her. Now he owed her, not just some scrap of prey either, but his life. How was he going to pay that debt? Jayblue straightened up, his spine giving a crack of protest, and felt the soreness wash over his body. "Can we cut the Malice Pool dirt now?" He could tell she was thinking it too, and he still wasn't looking at her. He hadn't meant for the apprentice to die, out here, had he? He just wanted to, you know, scare her a little. Yet he had almost been killed, and while she hadn't exactly thoughtlessly saved him, she'd saved him anyway. They weren't even kin. They hated each other. Had she thought that the clan would blame her if he turned up dead? That they would piece it together? They probably wouldn't have. By the time the sun set tonight he would've been several fox lengths below, and no one would be able to dig him out.
Jayblue turned back to her slowly. "Thank you," he muttered, the words unyielding. Swallowing his pride, he finished, "for saving my life." It left the taste of bile on his palette, having to admit what he owed. "Also, yes, let's get out of here." Flashing her a look over his shoulder, the warrior began to stalk back toward the trees, taking care to watch his step. He paused to shake some of the mud off of his pelt, so that she might also catch up. "If you tell anyone about this..." The words caught in his throat. He had been about to say, "I'll make your death look like an accident," but that hit too close to home. Instead he finished lamely, "you'll regret it," and fell silent, his mud covered tail dragging behind as they walked.

while he heaved up bits of starclan only knew what and she splayed herself out on the chilly grass, panting still with the strain of tugging a much bigger cat around with so much resistance, she felt every last ounce of her concern wilt away and, wiped clean of any possible 'feelings' of sympathy for the tabby warrior, she narrowed her eyes and sat up, her back hunched as she glared at him during his hasty recovery. boy was he in rough shape! she could hardly see any of his gray fur amidst the opaque black muck that encased his lean frame. "quit looking at me like tha-" her voice was a hot snarl, ready to start up where they had left off, and all the sound leaving her maw fell away at once to a slightly stunned silence. thanks, huh? she wanted to laugh and shoot him her cruelest grin-- milk this for all it was worth. after all, he'd sent her out here with his own dastardly intentions hadn't he? malice pool indeed! instead of saying anything for a moment, she simply narrowed her eyes and glared at him. did she have to tell him he was welcome? was he? the scruffy apprentice wasn't sure she'd do it all over again but.. well. maybe she would, after all he wasn't so bad she'd just let him die. he was still her clanmate, after all.
"yeah yeah, I guess you're welcome or something. just watch where you're walking huh mousebrain?" she meant to spit the words out, like a warning, but instead they erupted quietly, almost like a giggle. ugh. she made a face at him and wiped her mud-covered paws off on the long grass, not looking at him. in fact, all she could do was try her best to distract herself from the look in his brilliant blues when he looked at her. what an idiot. like I'll forgive him for trying to trick me.. huh! brazenpaw snarled inwardly, her maw still stretched into a grimace as she finished the task at hand and turned back to him, flicking her tail as if ready to continue following him. it was an unwitting motion, and she hardly noticed it.
"oh for starclan's sake!" she burst out, real anger flashing in her blurred vision at his last remark, "would you shut up? gosh you'd think you'd quit with the damn attitude after starclan biting your tail like that huh? nope! not jayblue! he's too good to be actually grateful! gosh!" she spat, her whole little frame trembling slightly now, and realized perhaps she was still in a bit of shock after the ordeal that had just unfolded before them, and such a plain unpleasant surprise paired with her sour clanmate and her own explosive temper- it was a dangerous concoction.
but in some sort of miracle, a soft, "sorry.." was added and she looked away, her temper still bubbling softly in her chest, but she felt it was no longer directed at the tom. after all, she was proud too. she didn't blame him for that, no it was more of a general sort of fury, simmering just below the surface for no reason, and searching for a reason to explode from her. jayblue, of course, was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and she was sorry, oddly enough. she couldn't imagine meeting such a near-death experience and recovering so quickly. "oh nevermind! let's keep walking it off. you're still wet and I'm a mess. everyone would be suspicious if we ended up back in camp now." the brown she-cat looked at him, a fire still burning beneath her eyes, though it seemed he was out of the danger zone for now while she walked beside him. "let's just find somewhere to lay down. away from these death pits."

JAYBLUE ♕ Everything seemed to be happening quickly, thoughtlessly, due to the massive amount of adrenaline pumping through his body. Jayblue couldn't quite keep a grasp on what was happening, he only knew what had happened, and even that was slowly catching up to him. For instance now, walking away from the scene, soaking wet and filthy. The image of her standing there, as defiant as ever, glaring at him with those very particular green eyes. They reminded him of the pale leaves of water lilies, motionless among more colorful pinks and yellows. He'd never really noticed them before, the exact color. He supposed he hadn't actually taken in Brazenpaw's appearance as less than a whole until he'd looked up from his struggle and flashed her a look that must have been terrified and frustrated. Catching himself, Jayblue stumbled over his own paws and contained a snarl which surely would have seemed overly hostile to her. What was he doing? It must have been the effects of what had happened, causing him to think this way, look at things in the particular rather than just in his narrow minded, ignorant way. It would wear off, he just had to give it time. He tried to tune into what she was saying right then, though his thoughts were still moving slowly, sluggishly. Brazenpaw was acting strangely too. He turned and looked at her, and suddenly her pitch increased dangerously. The expression on his features wasn't guarded and aggressive as usual, nor confused, happy, unhappy, whatever. It was simply blank, a mask covering an unusually clever mind that was now whirring to catch up to present time.
"nope! not jayblue! he's too good to be actually grateful! gosh!" Very briefly, he stared at her, then realized what he was doing and regained a carefully closed attitude, snapping his face back to the front, still trailing along, blindly following the path they had taken out here. They both had looked away now, and after her quiet apology he responded in turn, a mumble, "Sorry." He was sorry for his stupid comment, of course, which was rarely something he felt shame for. She had saved his life, however, that much he rationalized, and that meant he was in no position to be making threats. Jayblue barely heard her next remarks, only the part about getting away from the death pits, and not going back to camp. Yes, it would look suspicious. He was the master of suspicious. He couldn't work out how that would be bad for them right then, but he knew it would be, so he nodded, having been reduced to the less talkative of the pair. No longer assuming a figure of authority, despite his greater age and size, and general assertiveness overall. He wasn't his usual self, but then again, he had just been facing down his death and the possibility of Starclan's existence. When he noticed a bent, young tree, providing shade among the dry grass, he wasn't being a leader by flopping down there. He was just very, very tired. He refused to be caught off guard though, it was still in his nature to be distrusting. Jayblue lay his head on his paws but kept his blue eyes firmly open. "I guess we found the Malice Pool after all," he meowed, thinking of the irony to himself. It probably wasn't best to be commenting so off-handedly on what could've nearly caused both of their deaths, but he was in no way trying to get in anyone's good graces. By now he had accepted that this situation was beyond his control, and he had to be careful what he thought and felt. It was a bit like being stuck in the mud, only now it wasn't life or death, he was just along for the ride.
"It's been an interesting day, anyway, to say the least." After that he stayed silent, collecting his thoughts and replaying the important parts of the past few hours. There was no need to fill perfectly good silence with words that would only make things more uncomfortable, he decided. If she didn't want to talk, they wouldn't talk. What a different standpoint that was to him. Why should I care what she wants? His mind snapped back at him, but he always had the reoccurring thought: she saved my life. For that, at least for right now, he owed her some respect.

her paws were threading through tempestclan's characteristic tall, rough grass, but she wasn't feeling it. in fact, she may as well have been floating in the sky for all the attention she paid her surroundings or their possible destination. all she could do was try and harness her own thoughts, casting her clanmate the occasional sidelong glance, really quite conflicted now. what was that? bonding? she could feel it in her bones that something had clicked inside both of them. nothing too dramatic, nothing that wouldn't pass in a few days, but there was something there whirring inside of jayblue's mind too, she could sense it. of course, they were surely both well in a trance after the lightning pace of the past few events since they had met up in camp. still, the apprentice couldn't manage to make that into an excuse for the way she tread with such numbness now, her thoughts whirling out of control.
and what of jayblue? what would happen now? of course it was sort of a life-altering thing, when one's death appeared before them and then was torn away in a miraculous instant. he was gonna still be a prick to her and to everyone else of course, brazenpaw wasn't foolish enough to believe they now had some sort of kinship or anything, but what about when they passed each other in camp now? would they say hi? ignore each other? what about the next two moons on dawn patrol? she almost gasped aloud, fumbling a step before pushing on after him, to where he had laid himself down in a similar state of numbness, evidently. she glanced down at him for a second, uncomprehending, then slowly curled herself up adjacent to him, less than a taillength away. was that okay? why did she care? brazenpaw just didn't want to make things awkward, and sighed.
"yeah, you can say that again." she finally meowed, frowning slightly in a response to both of his comments-- a halfhearted reply and neither she nor he would particularly mind. she cocked her head slightly, and looked at him- he was on edge too. he wasn't asleep, despite his obvious exhaustion. he wasn't even at ease! "well? what now, furball?" she wondered aloud, deciding to direct the question at him full on. he surely had an opinion on the matter, and her mind wouldn't quell enough for her to fall asleep right away, anyway, though she didn't seem to have the pride that kept her clanmate from falling asleep in front of her, she was just too restless. sore, but restless.

JAYBLUE ♕ He barely noticed the lack of distance between them. Of course, there had never been much there to begin with. So far as he knew, neither of them was extremely prudish. Still, it was half noted, stored away for later analysis. He supposed a situation like this sort of removed space, in an odd way. Listening to the forest settling around them, he wondered if this was what was meant by a 'companionable silence.' It would have been far more uneasy if they'd both been well rested and geared up for another round at each other's throats, but they were both far too tired for fighting. It was growing later, and the longer they lay in the shade the more relaxed he became, though he still remained on his guard. Finally he managed to grasp the thought that a cat that had just saved him wasn't going to outright murder him, and besides, what did he have to fear from Brazenpaw? The muscles in his shoulders slowly but surely relaxed and though his eyes remained open, he became aware of the warmth the ground had taken from his body, radiating back to him. It was oddly pleasant, the endeavor. He wondered how much longer it would last before something shifted in their unusual alliance.
"well? what now, furball?" Back to the easy insults, but without venom. Neither of their hearts were in it. Jayblue forced his head to lift, and began grooming mud from his spine, comfortable enough to turn his back to her in a way, focusing on the drying goo. After a bit he returned his gaze to her, noting a patch of mud on her shoulder and studying it as he thought. "Unless you know of any surefire ways of getting into camp without getting caught, we should probably head back at moonhigh. I know who's on guard, she won't bother to question us." He was back to being analytic, and was pleased to be faced with the problem, as it gave him something to focus on besides the events of the day. "Then again, if we go back now, I think I'd rather a small punishment from your mentor than the bombardment of questions and the walk that would be waiting if we took that option." He was still looking at the mud patch, able to imagine he could actually see it drying. Unaware of anything but that which he stared blindly at and his own perception. "So the favorable option is just to stay here, and hope that the flea-" Jayblue snapped his jaws shut, looking away from the tawny patch finally with an irritated look meant for his own actions. "I mean, it's your choice, either way..."

she felt better, admittedly, after several moments stretched by and the light pre-spring wind fluttered across her thick fur whilst her clanmate sprawled like he did across from her. the rigidity of their former situation seemed to lapse by and gradually dissolve altogether, until jayblue felt relaxed enough to visibly resign himself to her presense. how refreshing! the apprentice curled her tail close to her stocky body and narrowed her muddy eyes as she watched his piercing blue gaze (somehow handsome? everyone thought that though) drift her way. she wished he would stop, and fall asleep or look into the forest or something. she felt suddenly exposed and scrutinized and.. self-conscious? brazenpaw wasn't a female wracked with worry over her appearances, as she had deemed herself to be teetering on the line between unattractive and average long ago, and was content with that. after all, being pretty wasn't particularly high on her list of priorities, and she had no hope to feel that it ever would be what with her sisters both being so easy on the eyes from the start.
now, though, she fought the impulse to smooth the furs she could feel sticking up along her back and chest, and instead simply let her gaze drop to the sickly straw-colored grass in front of her, as if that would keep jayblue from noticing the mold-colored fleck scarring her blind eye. that's not what I meant. she wanted to tell him, when he interpretted what she said as strategy planning inside of something more, but thinking back on it, she didn't want to come off as so concerned about some dumb friendship thing anyway. so she bobbed her head instead, "there's always the dirtplace. the guards'd see us though." she interjected halfheartedly, shrugging away her own thought. "not worth the worry either way- oh." knows the guard? why would't she bother us? what kind of 'know'? brazenpaw thought almost defensively, squinting at the tom and cocking her head a bit curiously. "alright. we'll go then. but it's not like we won't be missed. I've got duties with the elders right now," she snorted, "crotchety old ducks anyway." she let her rather gruff mutter trail off when she noticed that jayblue no longer seemed to be paying any attenion.
she cleared her throat meaningfully and frowned, "I don't like thinking about what everyone will think. you know how gossip is. starclan above have mercy on what kind of nonsense our clanmates will think up," brazenpaw spat, "I say we go back at separate times. I mean, separated by just a short while but enough to douse any... uh.. suspicions..." she mumbled, a bit awkwardly. "I'll slip in a while before you and you can pay your night-guard friend a visit, yeah? shitty though, to be awake still at moonhigh since we've got patrol bright and early tomorrow." the ruddy female grimaced, then flopped her head down onto her forepaws with something like exasperation, still fighting the urge to run to the other side of the tree so he couldn't look at her. what a silly thought! she reprimanded herself harshly and closed her eyes with no intentions of sleeping, but perhaps her stupid worries would leave her.

JAYBLUE ♕ At her clearing her throat, Jayblue snapped to attention, though he couldn't quite gather his previous thoughts, as though the rough sound had shattered them and sent them all flying in different directions. Feeling disconnected, he nodded with a bitter smile. "Yeah, and we can't let them hear you saved me and start thinking we're friends or something. Because we're not." He stumbled there. Why did I go and say that? A bit of fur standing up on his neck, the gray-blue tom added swiftly, "We're not, right?" He wasn't clarifying, he just wasn't entirely sure at that point where the alliance lay. This was dangerous territory. He didn't like friends. It was better to stand alone or not stand at all. There was kin and clan and then there was everyone else. The last thing he needed was a pesky female hanging his rescued life over his head, clinging to his tail and pestering him. But Brazenpaw wouldn't do that. Right? Shutting his eyes, Jayblue heard the note of awkwardness in her voice. "Right..." he agreed without thinking, then interjected, "we're not friends. The night-guard and I, I mean. But that sounds like a good plan."
"Shitty though, to be awake still at moonhigh since we've got patrol bright and early tomorrow." He'd nearly forgotten the dawn patrols. Damn, this was going to screw things up for him. How would it be? What would they do? How was he supposed to act? "Er, yeah," Jayblue muttered. "I guess I'll be seeing you tomorrow, then. I mean, on the patrol." Both of their eyes were closed now, and he tried to loosen his tense muscles again, laying his head on his paws. "Suppose we can sleep until moonhigh, anyway..." Idiot, idiot, idiot, IDIOT. Why am I being such an idiot? I wish I was going back first, I need to get away from here...
